Hello, a quick post and lots of pictures today to share with you two vintage ephemera folios I've made. I followed a tutorial on how to make this kind of folio on OakHouseJournals YouTube channel. The first label/ephemera folio is collaged using papers from Craft O Clock called: vintage bisou. The sleeve is a piece of baking paper. This folio contains journaling cards, labels and tags, two vellum bags, some printables from Artymaze and a few labels from Tracy Fox. The second folio I decorated with vintage French ephemera scraps I bought at a French Etsy store. The sleeve is a tea dyed wrinkled piece of copy paper, collaged with scraps. This folio holds labels and (handmade) tags, tickets, some Tracy Fox labels and authentic vintage French ephemera. I like how they turned out but the second one is my favourite. This tutorial is a long time coming! About two years ago, Becca Feeken at Spellbinders came out with these great Vignette dies where you die cut different layers of a scene and put them all together with a structure that you also die cut. These things BLEW MY MIND! I couldn't wait to get some of these dies. Everyone else felt the same way. These dies sold out very quickly! By the time I got to the website with my credit card, they were gone! I had no way of making an adorable vignette that would fold up, go in an envelope, and bring not only my good wishes but "ooos" and "ahhhhhs" from the recipient. Or did I? That's when I invented this card. But unfortunately, my life was so busy at that point (sole caregiver to my mother, who has dementia) that I didn't have time to make a tutorial. But now I do, and so here we go! Because I wanted this to be a springtime card, I chose to use a base of Stampin' Up's Mint Macaroon cardstock. I cut one piece of cardstock at 11" X 5-12," and cut another piece of cardstock into four pieces, each 4-1/4" X 5-1/2". If you want to make it easy on yourself, MAKE SURE THE 4-1/4" MEASUREMENTS MATCH! Each of those four pieces should be EXACTLY the same width. Stack them on top of each other, and if they are not EXACTLY the same width, trim them so they are. I sound like someone who didn't do this earlier, don't I? Mmmmhmmmm. Score the big piece of cardstock right down the middle at 5-1/2", and score each of the smaller pieces at 1/2" on both long edges (see diagram below). Remember: When you score cardstock, fold AWAY from the indentation, not with it. I know it's counter-intuitive, but if you fold away from the indented score line on the big piece, it's going to make one of the instructions further down make sense. Michelle Wright explains it well here. I bought these dies from Poppystamps specifically to create this technique. If you do not have these dies, you can use any nesting dies you have. You can use dies that are the same size for that matter. If you don't have dies at all, you can cut a tunnel in your cardstock with a paper trimmer or scissors. Heck, it's just paper! Play around with it! Here is the same cardstock after I die cut. (Okay, some of you have noticed that there are two right-side score lines on the bottom right-hand panel. I initially scored the wrong indentation. Whoops! That's why I designated this panel to be in the back. No one will notice.) I colored directly onto the trees and branches with the brush tip of a Copic W5 marker and airbrushed with some yellow-green Copics. I used the lightest marker for what's going to be the front panel and went gradually darker. However, I don't think that was necessary because you can always change how light or dark you go by airbrushing lighter or darker. (Eventually, I end up adding more color anyway, but at this point in the process, I didn't know I was going to do that yet.) Cut a contrasting panel (mine is yellow) at 5" X 3". This is going to go at the back of the tunnel, so I used a really bright panel. Then, after placing the tree panel with the smallest opening over top of the 3X5 panel so I would know where to stamp, I stamped the word "Spring." I also smeared some glue at the bottom and covered it with Flower Soft that I found in a drawer. The flower soft did not cover completely, so I added some light green glitter as well. It's like a meadow of flowers and glitter, like in real life. Now it's time to add our first windowed panel to the inside of the card. Start with the panel with the smallest opening. Add some Score-tape (or other adhesive; your choice) to the left flap of that panel. Because you have folded your 11" X 5-1/2" cardstock against the fold indentation, you should have a ridged score line on the inside of the card. Place the panel with the tree window on the right side of that ridge. Peel the Scor-Tape liner off, make sure everything is lined up, and close the front of the card. Now, when you open the card back up, you should see something like this. Take the panel with the second smallest opening, put some Scor-Tape (or other adhesive) on the left flap, and adhere it just above the panel you just did. Keep doing that until you have all four windowed panels stuck down evenly on the inside front of your card. I forgot to take a picture of it, but adhere the 3" X 5" panel (mine is yellow) to the inside back cover so you will be able to see it through the windows. Even though I forgot to photograph that part. You are very smart and will be able to figure out exactly where it goes. At this point in this particular card, I realized that just airbrushing some green around the tree tops was not going to make this a very woodsy card, so I took some distress ink and a sea sponge and sponged leaves on the various layers. It was extremely easy to mask off each layer by simply putting a half sheet of cardstock behind the panel I was working on and another half sheet to the left of that panel. I also took the opportunity to airbrush some moss or grass on the ground under the trees. And then I die cut some deer, and a bunny, and some birds. I believe these dies are from Impression Obsession. I sponged some ink on the edges to make them look more rounded and lifelike. This is a great time to add any critters or flowers or vines or whatever to your layers. So much harder after sticking the right side of the flaps together (voice of experience). I also realized I wanted to scatter some more Flower Soft at the bottom of each layer, so I did that too. Now cut one more piece of the green cardstock at 5-1/2" X 4-1/4" and score it lengthwise at 2". I went ahead and stamped mine with a wood background. The 2" part of the panel is going to be used to hold all four of the right-hand side flaps together, and the 2-1/4" part of that panel is going to get stuck to the right-hand inside of the card. Because you are sticking flaps together, on the back of that panel, run your adhesive horizontally. I used my wide Scor-Tape for this because . . . I really don't have a lot of other uses for tape that wide, and I have a whole roll. You can absolutely use adhesive that is narrower. Open up your card completely and press all those layers down. See how they line up nice and even? That's where the 2" part of the new panel is going to go! Take your Scor-Tape liners off, and stick it all together. I glued the 2-1/4" part to the back cover first, and then--while it was all still flat--glued the 2" side down. Open the close your card to make sure it all works. If you want to take another run at it, Scor-Tape can be loosened with your heat gun and the paper very gently pried apart again. Also feel free to use your scissors to trim anything that didn't quite fit. To finish up the inside of the card, I stamped this sentiment by Penny Black to the left of the trees. And this is how the tunnel looks all put together! Magical! Here is the entire inside of the card put together. Oh yeah, I need an outside of the card too! I used this die from Eutreec that I bought really reasonably from Amazon, and a wood-grain embossing folder from Stampin' Up. Here are a couple more samples I made: This one uses regular old nesting dies, and some very old but gorgeous paper from a company I don't even think is in business anymore. I can't remember what this paper is. I made the card two years ago. I have a thing for adding butterflies wherever I can. The nesting dies used here are Spellbinders, and the butterfly and plant dies are Cheery Lynn. And this one uses Spellbinders dies from the one and only Becca Feeken! Yes, the very dies I was looking for and couldn't get at the time, came back in stock and I bought them!!! And now I can use them in the Storybook Tunnel Card! I also got to use some very beautiful paper from Graphic 45 on this one. This card is made even more special with a door. The door opens and everything. Look! Another magical world inside! Hello everyone and welcome to my bloggy space. Hope you are having a fabulous day. Here I am finally, sharing Part 1 of my Step by Step Tutorial for the little Photo Folio I made as exchange gifts for some scrappy friends .. Adriana Bolzon, Astrid Maclean, Heather Jacob and Helen Wallace. I have to warn you .. this post is really HUGE!!! Probably would have been better as a video but, as I don't make videos, I have decided to do it in two stages. This first stage will show you how to make the inside pages (which is what you need to first anyway) and then in stage two I will share how to create the cover and put it all together. So, this is what I'll be showing how to make today. First up though, I would like to thank all the generous people who share their ideas and techniques freely on You Tube. They are way too many to name but, without the inspiration and little tips from these fabulous crafters, this would have been a lot more difficult to put together. Thank you ladies and gents. Hoping this will all make sense to you. NOTE: You can use 12 x 12 sheets of cardstock for the whole of the folio but, for the cover, it is easier if you have A3 size. You can make it with 12 x 12 sheets but with the A3 size it can be made in one piece. I am just letting you know this so that you can match colour for both parts of the book. For this part of the folio you will need 4 sheets of 12 x 12 cardstock. If you do have A3 size sheets you will need less of course. THE BASE PAGES. Following the diagram, cut three base pages from your chosen cardstock. As you can see, I rounded the corners but that is really not necessary as it all gets covered over anyway. The base sheets get sewn together so, lay them over each other staggering them, as shown below. Set your machine at the largest stitch size to sew them. The larger the stitch, the less likely it is to tear. If you do not have a machine you can, of course, do it by hand. I staggered mine about 5/8th inch apart and then did my sew line about an inch in from the edge of the top leaf. To create the pages, turn the set over .. .. and, using a bone folder or something similar, crease the first sheet on the left side towards the center. Do the same for the second sheet. The bottom sheet is left as is, as this one gets glued to the cover. Use some sticky tape to secure the ends of the threads to the back to ensure that the stitches don't come undone. Probably a good idea to knot them first (I forgot that bit). This is what it should now look like. You have the base, which gets glued to the inside of the cover, and four basic 'leaves' to create the inside pages of your folio. Obviously the leaves don't need to be quite as wide as I've made them so you can cut them down if you wish. I feel though, that the bigger the surface you have to adhere to, the stronger it will be. But that's just me. With this basic structure, you can create any number of different types of pages for your folio. Of course, you can also add more 'leaves' for more pages but I didn't want my folio to be too thick and bulky so, four pages was enough for me. Now we need to create those 'pages'. HALF POCKET PAGE. Following the diagram, cut out the two pieces from your chosen cardstock. (The solid lines are cut lines, the red broken lines are score lines) Ink the edges. (You can see by the photos that I forgot to do this until after the pocket was finished .. Duhh!! LOL!!) To make the pocket, Part B is glued to the back of the first leaf (the narrowest one) of your base pages and Part A gets wrapped around them. TIP: To ensure that they fit together properly, you may need to trim a tiny bit off the side of the base leaf and off Part B as well .. this will enable Part A to fit comfortably around without buckling them. Adhere double sided tape to the back of the 'base leaf' and then, adhere Part B, making sure it is lined up properly. (The 'base leaf' actually ends up inside the pocket.) Score the lines on Part A (3/4 inch from each end) as per the diagram, crease the score lines and cover the inside of each end with double sided tape. TIP: To ensure a neat finish it is a good idea to trim a tiny V section off each end starting at the score line. It's a bit hard to tell from the photo below but you can see it more clearly further down. You can also see that I cut out a small half circle in the center at the top. This is optional of course but I feel it may make it easier to pull out the booklet that fits into this pocket. Wrap Part A around Part B making sure it is lined up properly and that the tops of the pocket are even. Remove the backing on the double sided tape and adhere the end to the back of Part B. Below you can see what I meant about cutting out the V section at the ends. Before glueing down the other side, just make sure it is still lined up properly. To close the pocket at the base, simply run a small bead of glue along the inside at the bottom. I used Glossy Accents. The thin nozzle makes it easy to insert under the bottom edge. The finished pocket (after inking!). On to the next page. Hope you're still with me peeps. DOUBLE POCKET PAGE Following the diagram, cut two of each from your chosen cardstock. Ink the edges. These pockets are assembled the same as the previous pocket. Part B is attached to the 'base leaf' and Part A is wrapped around them both. Round the corners on one of the short edges of Part B. This will be the top of the back of the pocket. The first step is to cut the 'base leaf' to create two sections. Find the center at the inside edge of the leaf (the sew line) and make a mark 1/4 inch on each side. Do the same at the outside edge. Draw a line between the two marks and cut this section away leaving about an eighth of an inch at the bottom for strength (this also prevents you from cutting through the sew line). As with the other pocket, you may need to trim a tiny bit off one side edge of both the 'base leaf' and Part B to ensure a good fit for Part A. Adhere double sided tape to the back of both base sections .. .. remove the backing and adhere Part B to each section with the rounded corners at the top as shown. Score the lines on both Part A's (3/4 inch from each edge) as per the diagram and crease on the score line. Attach double sided tape to the scored sections and cut a small V shape from each end as on the previous pocket. When wrapping Part A around Part B to create the pocket, make sure you push it down to the bottom. Part B should protrude about 3/4 inch above Part A. Don't push it too tight to the bottom though, leave about a 1/16th to 1/8th inch as it needs a little space so you can flip the page comfortably. The photos below show how it should look. To close the bottom of the pockets, run a small bead of glue on the inside at the base. I hope everything is making sense to you thus far. FULL POCKET PAGE Following the diagram, cut out the two pieces from your chosen cardstock and ink the edges. Score Part B as shown on the diagram (2.25 inch from the top). This creates the flap for the pocket. Round the edges of the flap if desired. Once again, Part B is glued to the 'base leaf' and Part A is wrapped around them. Put your double sided tape on the back of the base leaf and adhere Part B making sure it is lined up properly. The photo shows the back .. unfortunately, I forgot to take a shot of the front .. sorry about that. On Part A, crease on the score lines .. .. attach the double sided tape and cut the small Vshapes off the bottom ends. As with the previous pockets, Part A needs to be placed close to the bottom leaving just enough room to be able to open and close the page. Again, to close the pocket at the bottom, run a thin line of glue on the inside at the base. Attach magnets to ensure that the pocket flap stays closed. So, now onto the last of our pages. FLIP OUT PAGE Following the diagram, cut one piece only. This is the simplest of the pages to make. Simply cut it out and score as per the diagram. Crease the score lines, ink the edges and then adhere it to the last of the 'base leaves'. Attach double sided tape to the back of the 'base leaf'. Making sure the page is lined up straight, remove the backing and adhere the largest section of the flip page to the folio base leaf. Fold your page to the inside .. .. and it's done!! That's all folks!! The pages are now complete and ready for matting .. Yayy!! Before you start adding your papers, you will need to trim the base down. It was easier to do this as a last step rather than try to explain it at the beginning. Trim the base to about half an inch on the left side of the sew line and three and a half inches on the right side (4" total width). This will ensure that your pages will fit properly inside the outer cover. Here is the page set with papers added. ('Cos I forgot to take a photo before I matted everything. Duhh!! ) When adding your papers, do not cover the base as yet. That will get done after it is adhered to the outer cover. Tip: When lining the pockets, make sure your paper covers the little ridge left by the 'base leaf'. This will ensure that your photo and journalling mats don't get caught on it. It's not necessary to take your paper all the way to the bottom, just make sure that the 'ridge' is covered. So, the inside of the folio is now done. I hope I explained everything clearly enough. Hey, Gang! I am up on the CutCardStock Blog today! Our theme for June is "Friendship" and our product focus is Pop-Tones Cardstock. I have created a 7" x 5" photo folio tutorial to share. The folio folds up to 7" tall by 5" wide and is 1/8" thick. I have added a magnetized band to keep the folio closed. I paired the bold Pop-Tones Cardstock with pretty decorative paper to make a fun gift, perfect for your best friend! The folio opens to 11" wide and contains space for a large photo, plus there is a pocket where you may add more photos or journaling cards. I used photos of "found relatives" for may sample! I love these ladies! My daughter said the gals who are full-on laughing are all me! {giggle} Let's get started on the tutorial. 1. Cut Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock to 7" x 11" and score at 1", 1 1/8", 6 1/8", and 6 1/4" on the 11-inch side. Fold on all score lines. 2. Cut Pop-Tones Berrylicious Cardstock to 6 7/8" x 7/8" and attach to the 1-inch tab. Cut Pop-Tones Wild Cherry Cardstock to 6 3/4" x 3/4" and attach to the top of the Berrylicious Cardstock. Cut decorative border to 6 5/8" x 5/8" and attach over the Wild Cherry Cardstock. (I simply love the names of the Pop-Tones Cardstock!) 3. Cut shells decorative paper (Graphic 45 By the Sea) to 6 7/8" x 4 7/8" and attach to the middle panel. (This panel will become the back of the folio when folded.) 4. Cut Berrylicious Cardstock to 6 7/8" x 4 7/8" and attach to the last panel. (This panel will become the front of the folio when folded.) Cut Wild Cherry Cardstock to 6 3/4" x 4 3/4" and attach to the top of the Berrylicious Cardstock. Cut plaid decorative paper to 6 5/8" x 4 5/8" and attach over the Wild Cherry Cardstock. 5. Fold the folio so that the 1-inch tab is on the right side of the project as shown. Burnish all score lines. 6. Cut a border strip from decorative paper that is 1 1/4" wide by 12" long. Place a magnet under the right edge of the border strip, then wrap the strip to the left edge and around to the back of the folio. Place a second magnet onto the back of the loose end of the border strip. The back of the folio will look like the photo above. 7. Glue a decorative chipboard element to the top of the border strip. Stamp word art onto Solar White Cardstock with black ink. Cut the image into a banner shape. Cut Wild Cherry Cardstock into a banner shape, slightly larger than the image. Mat the image and attach to the upper left corner of the folio. Embellish the image with sticker corners and fussy cut shells. 8. Open the folio and cut plaid decorative paper to 6 7/8" x 7/8" and attach to the 1-inch tab. 9. Cut Berrylicious Cardstock to 6 7/8" x 4 7/8" and attach to the center panel. Cut Wild Cherry Cardstock to 6 1/8" x 4 5/8" and attach to the top of the Berrylicious Cardstock. 10. Cut a photograph slightly smaller than the Wild Cherry photo mat and attach to the panel. (The photo shown was printed onto the Solar White Cardstock for a matte finish.) 11. Cut plaid decorative paper to 1/2" x 4 5/8" and attach to the bottom of the Berrylicious Cartstock mat. Add a decorative sticker strip to the center of the plaid paper. 13. Cut blue checked paper to 6 7/8" x 4 5/8" and attach to the first panel. 13. Create a pocket for the first panel. Cut Wild Cherry Cardstock to 2 3/8" x 4 5/8" and attach it on three side to the bottom of the first panel. Trim Berrylicious Cardstock to 2 1/4" x 4 1/2" and attach to the center of the pocket. Trim plaid decorative paper to 2 1/8" x 4 3/8" and attach to the center of the pocket. 14. Cut a strip of Wild Cherry Cardstock to approximately 1" x 4 5/8" and punch one edge with a scalloped border punch. Attach the strip to the top of the pocket. Cut a decorative border to fit the scalloped border strip and attach. 15. Stamp a sentiment onto Solar White Cardstock with black ink and cut into a banner shape. Attach the sentiment to the left side of the pocket with foam adhesive. Place photos and journaling spots into the pocket. 16. Mat photos onto Solar White Cardstock, if desired. Write notes on the back of each photo. 17. Stamp a sentiment onto Solar White Cardstock with black ink and cut into a banner shape. Attach the sentiment to the upper left corner of the photo with foam adhesive. Thanks for looking!
