63 T The Naughty Marietta Playbill, 1976 Listed is a 1976 playbill for the operatta The Naughty Marietta. The operatta, set in the late 1700s, tells how Captain Richard Warrington sets out to capture a notorious French pirate with the help of a runaway named Contessa Marietta. The playbill includes black and white headshots and some cast bios (pictured above). It also includes several black and white illustrations that could be cut out as posters or used for a separate art project. It would also work as a great gift for any lover of the theater! The playbill is in good condition. Most of the damage is to the front and back covers, which are stained and bent slightly (pictured above). There's some tearing down the spine as well, however all of the inside pages are intact and still in good condition! Measures approximately 9 1/2'' x 12 1/2''. Figlia del marchese spezzino Filippo Oldoini e dalla marchesa Isabella Lamporecchi, cugina di Camillo Benso conte di Cavour, fu considerata tra le donne più belle e fascinose del suo tempo. Irrequieta, estremamente consapevole della propria bellezza e intrigata fin da giovanissima da storie galanti, ma anche ambiziosa e intelligente, sposò a 17 anni il conte Francesco Verasis Asinari di Costigliole d'Asti e Castiglione Tinella, dal quale ebbe un figlio, Giorgio Verasis Asinari, erede del titolo. Il matrimonio la introdusse alla corte dei Savoia, dove ebbe gran successo, con il re Vittorio Emanuele II, ma anche con i fratelli Doria, il banchiere Rothschild, Costantino Nigra, ambasciatore del Piemonte sabaudo in Francia. Considerata la sua intraprendenza e le sue doti di fascino, forse un po' imbarazzanti per il parente ma molto utili per il politico, il cugino Cavour nel 1855 la inviò in missione alla corte francese di Napoleone III per perorare presso l'imperatore l'alleanza franco-piemontese. La gran presenza mondana e seduttiva della contessa (la principessa di Metternich la definì "una statua di carne") diede i risultati attesi: ospitata lussuosamente a Compiègne, mondanissima, costosissima, la contessa fu per un anno l'amante pressoché ufficiale dell'imperatore, suscitando invidie, grande scandalo e la furia della cattolicissima imperatrice Eugenia, che giunse al punto di orchestrare un finto attentato pur di distrarre il consorte dalla rivale italiana. L'intrigo diede comunque i suoi buoni frutti, con l'appoggio francese alla partecipazione italiana alla Guerra di Crimea, ma la fortuna della contessa cominciò ad appannarsi. Il marito chiese ed ottenne il divorzio e morì infine in un incidente; Vittorio Emanuele, divenuto re d'Italia, non fu poi così generoso e la vita costosa della Castiglione si fece sempre più difficile. Anche dal ritorno in Francia non ricavò granché. Si stabilì tuttavia a Parigi, chiudendosi nel lutto per la propria bellezza in disfacimento, rifiutando perfino proposte di nuovi e ricchi matrimoni. Morì nella sua casa di Place Vendôme, dove aveva velato tutti gli specchi, pressoché in miseria. Le sue carte, che testimoniavano i contatti da lei avuti con molti importanti personaggi dell'epoca, furono sottratte e - si dice - bruciate dalla polizia, subito dopo la sua morte. È sepolta al cimitero del Père Lachaise, a Parigi.
