You've likely seen the stellar fish art of Joseph Tomelleri before and I recently came across this very worthy Year of the Bluegill poster which breaks down all the sunfishes of North America in a very organized and beautiful way. See more of Joseph Tomelleri's work on his website. This poster can be purchased through the Scott & Nix, Inc.
WARM and sunny today! Not much wind, temps in the mid 80's during the noon-hour. I visited a local public pond. Despite the overnight rain, the water was fairly clear. And with the bright sun overhead and not much wind, I could see into the water very well. I thought for sure I'd be able to spot a grass carp or channel catfish if they were around. Instead, I only saw a large turtle, lots of bullfrogs and large tadpoles, bass, bluegills, green sunfish, and a very large white goldfish. I wasted a good amount of time casting to that darn goldfish...I WANT TO CATCH THAT FISH!! But it ignored everything. I need something even smaller, I think. I had some flies with me I had tied up specifically for this situation, but I was too lazy to dig them out of the bottom of my hip pack. I did toss a fly that this fish had hit once before, but it didn't go for it again. I did catch some bluegills on that, though. Anyway, I ended up catching at least 7 Bluegills on a Woolly Worm, as well as 4 nice Green Sunfish.
Print Friendly Version I meant to get this posted soon after our little at-home fish fry in July, but time got away from me. This very simple fish frying technique will work for virtually any type of fresh fish. There is still lots of fishing to be done, and if you live in the Midwest,…Read more →

Our literature-based learning often lends itself to discovering other places and cultures, which is one of many reasons we love this method! Learning about Italy, Japan, and China have been some of our richest homeschool moments so far. Along with learning about other countries and their continents, we learn where those places are located on the globe. In order to help my girls learn the 7 continents, I created a set of printable Continents Cards that we use in a variety of ways. Note: This post was originally published in 2014. The Continents Cards and the post have been freshly

The sunfishes are among the most colorful and common fishes in North America. They are found in freshwater habitats across the continent and the larger species—bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and rock bass—are a favorite with anglers both for their tenacity and for how easy it can be to catch them. For many anglers, it’s the very first type of fish they ever caught, bringing back memories of lazy summer afternoons at the local fishing hole with with a rod, bobber, and a can of worms. Seventeen types of sunfishes by master illustrator Joseph R. Tomelleri are reproduced here all in relative scale. Species include: pumpkinseed, bluegill, spotted sunfish, orangespotted sunfish, redspotted sunfish, longear sunfish, redear sunfish, dollar sunfish, warmouth, redbreast sunfish, green sunfish, rock bass, flier, shadow bass, Ozark bass, black crappie, and white crappie. Shipped in a heavy duty poster tube, this beautiful 18 x 24 inch poster is perfect for identification of all the “sunnies” and will enhance any angler’s wall. It’s a celebration of America’s best-loved fishes.
