I checked another one off the Bucket List yesterday. I finally got my feet( knees) wet in the shoals of the Cahaba River. Staying on my feet was a feat in itself, but thanks to many helping hands, I managed to capture a few photos of the infamous Cahaba Lily! ( Hymenocallis coroniaria) These lovelies only thrive in shoals with an open canopy and moving water and bloom from May - June. A special thank you to Independent Presbyterian Church's Highland Avenue Forum for sponsoring Dr. Larry Davenport's lecture last week as well as our outing yesterday which he led.

I visited friends in Alabama and decided to make a quilt inspired by the beautiful Cahaba lilies. It is a large throw quilt and made with a cotton top, batting, binding, and a gray cotton back. The batting contains scrim which stabilizes the fabric and allows the quilt to be hung with minimal distorting. The quilt looks good hung or on a bed. (The bed in the photo is queen sized.) The wires, brackets, and clamps for hanging are not included. I begin my process by intuitively pinning fabric pieces to a large cork board and never using a pattern. I included photos of the process. While I personally designed and sewed the entire top, I outsourced the final assembly of the quilt to Nancy Stovell, at Just Quilting, and her long-arm sewing machines.

Alabama is filled with natural beauty, and there’s probably nothing more beautiful than the arrival of the Cahaba lilies each spring. The plant is super rare (more about that later) and even more gorgeous. In fact, when Naturalist William Bartram viewed the lilies before the Revolutionary War, he wrote, “nothing in vegetable nature was more …

River of Lilies on the Cahaba River in Alabama. The shoals lily, Hymenocallis coronaria, once grew in all Southern rivers at the fall line until the rivers were dammed. This is one of my favorite camping places on the Cahaba. I would wake up early and head out to the lilies before the sun came up. 1200WS1-6
