A la fin des années 70, Volvo a étendu sa gamme avec la série 300 (343, 345 et 360) et se doit de préparer la succession de cette gamme tout en la rendant plus attractive. C'est de profil que sa parenté avec la Citroën BX est la plus évidente. Le constructeur suédois, qui avait déjà collaboré avec le styliste Bertone pour le coupé luxueux 262C (en 1977), décide de se rapprocher une nouvelle fois du styliste italien pour un coupé plus compact. Une base de Volvo 343. Bertone propose alors à Volvo le concept Tundra, réalisé sur la base technique de la Volvo 343, et c'est Marcello Gandini qui s'est chargé de réaliser le style de ce concept, sans évoquer de près ou de loin la marque Volvo. Gandini était connu pour être le papa, entre autre de la Lamborghini Countach. Et on retrouve des lignes assez proches du concept Jaguar Ascot (1977), déjà une création de Gandini et Bertone. On retrouve la patte de Gandini dans cette obsession du moment pour les grandes vitres permettant un habitacle lumineux. La voiture était équipée d'un tachymètre digital et du moteur 4 cylindres 1.4 de 70 chevaux de la Volvo 343. Son tableau de bord, à l'époque futuriste, était entièrement digital. Un refus de Volvo. Jugé chez Volvo comme trop futuriste et trop éloignée du "style Volvo", elle ne verra finalement jamais le jour. En outre, les finances en berne du suédois l'obligent à finalement prolongé la carrière de la gamme 300 (jusqu'en 1991). Conçue sur la base de la 343. Le concept Tundra reprenait la base technique de la Volvo série 300, qu'elle était censée remplacer. Des lignes plus tard reprises pour la BX. La majeure partie des lignes de ce concept sera néanmoins reprise en 1982 sur la BX, dessinée pour Citroën afin de remplacer sa GSA.
