Species description Tillandsia, also known as Airplant, is an unusual plant that does not need soil to grow. It grows by taking nutrients from water and air. It is a genus of approximately 650 species of evergreen, perennial flowering plants from the Bromeliad family. It occurs in the forests, mountains and deserts of northern Mexico and the southeastern United States, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to half of Argentina. Their leaves, more or less silvery, are covered with special cells capable of quickly absorbing moisture from the environment (trichomes). Care Water We usually spray the strands 2 to 3 times a week (depending on the conditions in the room). The frequency of sprinkling depends on air humidity, temperature, light and air circulation. If the room is warm and dry, we sprinkle the plants more often, while in colder and humid rooms they should be sprinkled less often. Once a week, immerse the plant in water for about half an hour. Then we take it out, gently shake off the excess water and leave it upside down to dry completely. It should dry within 4 hours of watering, as this is the optimal water absorption time. The best water for watering is rainwater or soft water with a PH not exceeding 6. If we do not have rainwater, you can use boiled water. It should be set aside for a few days and poured off to remove any sediment. Once or twice a month, we fertilize the foliage with foliar orchid fertilizer at 1/3 of the normal dose for orchids. Light Diffused light is best for Tillandsia. They like bright rooms, but not full sun, as this causes the leaves to burn. In summer, the plant can be taken outside (e.g. on the terrace to a slightly shaded place). Under appropriate conditions, Tillandsia leaves become beautifully colored during flowering. Temperature Some Oplatwa species are more durable than others and can withstand even minus temperatures, but it is best if the winter temperature does not drop below 8 degrees Celsius. In summer, it tolerates high temperatures up to about 33 degrees. Air Good air circulation is very important when growing Tillandsia because leaving the plants wet for a long time causes them to rot. When the plant is placed in a glass ball, jar, etc., I recommend taking it out for watering and putting it back in place only after it has completely drying.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens provides 45 acres of bayfront sanctuaries connecting people with air plants of the world, native nature, and our regional history. Established by forward thinking women of their time, Selby Gardens is composed of the 15-acre Downtown Sarasota campus and the 30-acre Historic Spanish Point campus in the Osprey area of Sarasota County, Florida. The Downtown Sarasota Campus on Sarasota Bay is the only botanical garden in the world dedicated to the display and study of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads and ferns, and other tropical plants. There is a significant focus on botany, horticulture, education, historical preservation, and the environment. The Historic Spanish Point (HSP) Campus is located less than 10 miles south along Little Sarasota Bay. The HSP Campus, one of the largest preserves showcasing native Florida plants that is interpreted for and open to the public, celebrates an archaeological record that encompasses approximately 5,000 years of Florida history. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is also accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. For more information visit www.selby.org.
