I really liked the postcard I made and sent to our relatives in Hawaii so decided to make one for us as a memory keeper of our trip. As a reminder, here is the one I made to send. One thing I did not tell you was that when I make postcards to send I make them to fit inside a computer card envelope….you know those computer cards printed on a piece of copy paper that is folded in half both ways. This envelope is 4 3/8” x 5 3/4” but make your card to fit what ever size envelope you have, minus a little to make sure it easily slides in and out of the envelope. The cards stay clean when they are mailed inside an envelope and you won’t take a chance that all your hard work gets ripped up or ruined in the machinery that sorts the mail. To make this second card I used the same design, same fabrics for the leaves and flowers but did choose different light blue fabric for the background. Since it doesn’t have to fit in an envelope I made it a little larger – finished size 5” x 6”. Here it is all fused onto the Peltex/Timtex (don’t remember which it is) all ready to quilt. It will be trimmed to size after the quilting. I used the same threads to quilt the card as the smaller one….YLI Silk thread. I just love it as it is so beautiful and the colors are so luscious! I chose to quilt this card differently than the first card. I quilted a leaf like the fused leaves then quilted bubbles in the background. I do like to quilt around all the edges of the applique shapes and also like to echo quilt around all the shapes. I did finish the edges differently on this piece and like it better than the zig-zag edge. It just looks more finished and neater. Using a wave blade on my rotary cutter I cut a 1” strip of my background fabric that had fusible on the back. The top and bottom strips were fused on the front first and were cut about 1/2” longer on each end. I wrapped the ends around the side edges of the card then fused the binding to the back of the card. This finishes the corners of the card. The side pieces were fused to the front and cut the width of the card then fused to the back. The last step was to straight stitch around the card catching the fused binding. A very neat and tidy edge to be sure. I do love this little card quilt and it will help us remember a great vacation. I decided to try a new style and a Hawaiian applique quilt is a challenge for me. I'm not really good at applique, so I'll try with a small pattern. I started reading about traditional Hawaiian quilts, and this is the first pattern a beginner has to start with: Ulu, or Breadfruit. Big Leaf Vines are always a favorite of mine for large border areas: This is a very basic big leaf vine... Same Basic Big Leaf Vine... I added 2 vein lines in each leaf... I added a curl in each leaf... I echoed the leaf shape in each leaf... I added thicker vein lines in each leaf... I added jagged lines in each leaf... It is fun to challenge yourself to fill the big leaves with different designs! Inspiration from the Flower Beds: Be sure to double click on this image... There is a white spider inside the calla lily bloom These white spiders come every year and live in the calla lily blooms. I check on them each morning while watering: They are camera shy and run away... They hide from me on the back side of the bloom. You can see spider legs on the left of the bloom. Pink and Yellow Spider Dahlia I have a landscape tree quilt in progress, so I did some homework last evening... After the hay field, we went for a stroll up in the timber... The light filtering through the fir trees is lovely... The light appears golden as it hits the forest floor... These images help me determine the lighting on both sides of the tree trunk... Have a look at some of these gorgeous three-dimensional works of art. Our grandmothers did some lovely embroideries but they were nothing like this.

Většina z nás, co šijeme, se v poslední době věnovala úplně něčemu jinému, než je šití kabelek, dek a podobných textilních výrobků, protože jsme se věnovali šití roušek. I já jsem je šila (a šiju), jen to nikde nezveřejňuju. Přece jen se věnuju textilní tvorbě i profesně, nikoliv jen jako koníčku a roušky jsou pro mě jakousi vedlejší záležitostí, kterou nemám potřebu dávat mezi svou ostatní tvorbu. Ale možná se tak stane, až se z roušek stane módní doplněk a já je začnu quiltovat :) Už jsem nad tím i přemýšlela, ale bylo to spíše takové zoufalství, abych do toho nacpala něco hezkého, něco, co mě baví. Ale ve skutečnosti doufám, že se tak nikdy nestane a že roušky zmizí tak rychle, jak se objevily. Jak vy zvládáte nošení roušek? Já se přiznám, že je mi to odporné. Pokaždé, když si ji doma nasazuji (a většinou se musím vracet, protože na to zapomenu), tak si připadám, jako kdybych měla lepru. Při pohledu z okna na ulici si zase připadám, jako bych se dívala na nějaký špatný americký film. Pro mě je to čistý surrealismus. Jako bych se i já pohybovala v úplně jiné dimenzi, jiné realitě, v nějakém filmu, který za chvíli skončí a já pak začnu zase žít normálně. Ale zatím to tak bohužel nevypadá. Chybí mi pohled na obličej lidí, se kterými mluvím. Chybí mi úsměv. Jak jejich, tak můj. Mám pocit odcizení a vzdalování se navzájem od sebe. Nedělá mi problém karanténa, jen ty roušky. Jsem zvyklá být doma, protože doma pracuju. Jsem zvyklá vařit, protože normálně vařím a peču, teď jen možná o malinko více. Když už je mi doma těsno, vyjdu na procházku do lesa se psem nebo s rýčem na zahradu. Na zahradě jsem teď strávila o víkendu dost času a v pondělí mě pěkně bolely svaly. V ten moment mě vždy napadne, proč lidi vyhazují peníze za posilovny. Kdyby šli pracovat ven, ať už je to práce na zahradě, sekání dříví na topení nebo prostě jiné věci, které se normálně vždy dělaly a na spoustě míst stále dělají, tak by z těchto činností vzešli značně posílení a navíc by udělali něco smysluplného, něco užitečného. S dřívím se v zimě zatopí, na záhonu vyroste zelenina, na stromech a keřích ovoce. Nějak mám pocit, že celý náš svět, nebo alespoň tzv. západní civilizace je postavený na hlavu. Že jsme se nějak ztratili. Že jsme zapomněli, co je v životě důležité, co je smysluplné. Kromě práce na zahradě a vaření si také pěstuju kvásek, který jsem dostala od jedné dobré duše a vypadá to, že už bude zralý na to, abych z něj upekla svůj první kvasový chléb. Jsem zvědavá, jak se povede a jestli se vůbec povede. Chystám se nakrájet zeleninu do kvasící nádoby, kterou jsem dostala k narozeninám, abych si vytvořila své vlastní pickles. Taky doufám, že se povede. A kromě toho, že budu mít radost z vlastnoruční výroby, budu mít také bombu na podporu imunity, která bude rozhodně užitečnější, než vitamíny z lékárny. A hlavně jde o hromadu užitečných bakterií, které doplní střevní mikroflóru a právě tím silně posílí imunitu. Osobně si myslím, že se nějak zapomnělo na kysanou zeleninu, která je, řekla bych, pro nás mnohem zdravější a prospěšnější, než citrusové plody plné pesticidů. Proto si dám s chutí kysané zelí (bohužel zatím ne vlastní). Dcera ho moc nechce, protože jí připadá kyselé, tak snad pro ni bude pickles přijatelnější, protože to díky krátkodobějšímu kvašení tak kyselé není a jako malému dítěti jí chutnalo. Taky seju semínka, abych si vypěstovala sazenice. A všechny tyto činnosti mi momentálně připadají smysluplnější, než šití, barvení a tvoření obecně. Ale vím, že se to zase změní, že opět přijde doba, kdy budu mít potřebu něco vytvořit a hlavně mám v hlavě představu dalšího čísla občasníku. Takže jak se ta potřeba tvoření objeví, určitě se do něj pustím. A co tedy budu ukazovat zde, když moc netvořím? Věci, které z větší části vznikly ještě před současnou karanténou a které jsem většinou zveřejnila na svém Instagramu a Facebooku, ale ne zde. Takže teď je v souhrnu ukážu i zde, aby byly pěkně pohromadě. Jsou to dvě kosmetické taštičky, jedna sada a jedno psaníčko. Tak nejdříve to psaníčko. Na přední straně jsou aplikace listů a protože se mi zadní strana zdála chudá jen s quiltovanými bublinkami tón v tónu, udělala jsem si na zadní straně taky trochu volného quiltu. Pak tu mám ty dvě kosmetické taštičky. A na závěr nejnovější přírůstek, který jsem ještě neukazovala, sada taštiček. Quiltované mým oblíbeným vzorem, na který najdete na mém YouTube kanálu i video. A zapomněla jsem dodat, že všechny látky jsou samozřejmě ručně barvené. Nejen u této poslední sady, ale u všech taštiček. Jako vždy přeji všem krásný den a kromě toho vám také přeji, abyste současnou situaci využili k nalezení toho, co dává smysl vám, co je pro vás v životě skutečně důležité.
