Bessie Coleman, a brave young Black pilot in the 1920s—who even walked on the wings of airplanes—was honored by new Barbie doll.
Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was the first African American woman and the first Native American to hold a pilots license. But her journey to get there wasn’t an easy one. Bessie had to move to France in order to learn to fly because no flight school in the Unites States would take her. Not only was Bessie famous for her notoriously dangerous air shows, she was famous for standing up for her beliefs. She absolutely refused to perform at events that wouldn’t allow black audiences and would demand that blacks and whites be able to use the same entrances — something that was not common at the time. Her nicknames included Queen Bess and Brave Bessie. Bessie’s life was cut short by a plane crash in 1926 when she was just 34 years old. Her mechanic was flying the plane at the time and lost control, causing Bessie to be ejected from the plane. It is reported that 10,000 mourners attended her funeral service in Chicago in a service led by activist Ida B. Wells. // PRODUCT DETAILS: Museum-quality posters made on thick and durable matte paper. Nobody Owns the Sky The Story of "Brave Bessie" Coleman by Reeve Lindbergh published by Candlewick Press, 1996. This first edition hardcover is an ex-library copy but is in very fine condition. The binding is tight and the pages are intact and very clean. The dust jacket has been protected by a mylar sleeve and is very fine. There are some signs of its life in the library like official stamps and there is tearing where the cover was glued to the outer boards.
Defying social norms and breaking boundaries, these 13 women are an inspiration to anyone who wants to explore the world.
