We are wrapping up Mini Project Run and Play with Tutorial Week! All three winners of the mini competitions have put together tutorials for elements in their looks so that you can make them too! Today we kick it all off with the week 2 winner, Sarah from The Crazy Tailor: ******* Hi readers! Thanks for the love and votes for Canvas Week! I'm here with an easy tutorial for a sailor bow. This little thing requires just a teeny bit of sewing, and if you want, you can even use your glue gun for a few parts! Let's get started! You'll need some small scraps of fabric, scissors, needle and thread, a ruler, some type of hair clip to attach the bow to (I bought a huge bag of these clips on etsy). The measurements for the three pieces you'll need are: -bow piece: 10" x 3.5" -bow tails: 6.5" x 3.5" -middle of the bow: 3" x 1.5" Start with the bow piece (the largest piece) and fold it in scant thirds, wrong sides together. We're not doing any sewing on this one! Do the same with the smallest piece. And fold the middle sized piece in half, lengthwise, right sides together. Give everything a good iron! Then cut (angled in from the fold to the raw edge) the middle sized piece as shown in the above photo. You'll sew the middle sized piece from the folded edge around to the center of the raw edge using a 1/4" seam allowance. Be sure to leave a gap for turning! Once that's sewn, turn it right side out, poke out your corners and press. Take the largest piece and fold as shown below: Scrunch/fold it up so it makes a pretty bow shape and then take your threaded needle and poke it through all the layers. Don't pull your needle through yet! Grab your bow tails and find the middle, scrunch it up a bit and poke the needle through that as well. Once you're sure you've gone through all the layers, pull the thread through and then wrap it around and around. Secure your thread and tie off. Now grab your smallest piece and fold one raw edge under and whip stitch to the back of the bow. Wrap it around the front and to the back again. Trim off the excess, being sure to leave enough to turn under the raw edge again. Whip stitch this....or alternatively, use a hot glue gun for this whole finishing part! Now you can glue this onto a hair clip and you're all done! Use the same general idea and make the pieces bigger or smaller for a whole new look! Happy Sewing! Related Posts
