Word sorts are one way to help students learn spelling patterns and how to pronounce new vocabulary words. Students are able to focus on two or three patterns instead of trying to memorize a list of words. They are then better able to apply those spelling patterns to new words that follow a similar pattern.

Second graders are finishing up some really creative drawings set under the ground, so we did a lot of visualizing to come up with our ideas. We looked at some classic book illustrations by Garth Williams of Cricket in Times Square fame and the always classic Beatrix Potter. All of these story animals live in a hidden away, subterranean world and the job of the illustrator is to create that world. We talked about visual textures found in the layers of soil, clay, and rock. Some drawings show a realistic setting for a possible hibernating animal, readying for winter, and others have more of a sense of humor about them, as if the animals lived like people. Thanks to North Art Alert for posting their lesson on underground worlds - my students were inspired by yours.

There's nothing quite as amazing as cooking with kids. Frustrating, yes. But amazing, too. I've always (mostly) enjoyed showing my kids how to cook decent food and take ownership of their own nutrition. But that's not always easy when they're first learning to read recipes. Especially for young kids still learning to read. Long recipes

Visual Spatial Relations Age Group : 6+ Laid out in a colourful and easy-to-use format, it is addressed to special education needs teachers, occupational therapists, logopedists, parents and schoolteachers who aim to support their children in developing and strengthening their skills. It introduces a set of games and activities that build and enhance visual perceptual skills in an enjoyable and interactive way! Visual spatial awareness denotes the ability to understand spatial concepts and directions, necessary for interacting with the outside world. It also involves processing outside information and reasoning with it through visual representation in the mind. Along with quantitative and verbal ability, it plays a key role in developing expertise in learning and work settings as well as in determining orientation, laterality and directionality. People with visuospatial deficits have poor performance in sports and suffer from coordination and balance problems. They can also find it difficult to perform rhythmic activities. Furthermore, they are clumsy and tend to reverse forms and letters / syllables, including “o” and”8” or “ma” and am”. The book includes, inter alia: 135 worksheets; activities aiming at detecting elements with or without a point of reference; activities aiming at detecting letters in several types of grids and tables; activities aiming at finding the appropriate boxes for two-syllable and three-syllable words; activities requiring learners to follow their teacher’s instructions and draw letters and numbers inside squares, as well as interactive games and activities. Visual perceptual skills influence several aspects of children’s development and everyday life, ranging from (mixed) motor skills to essential life aptitudes.
Did you know that September 15th- ish is International Dot Day? It’s a day to celebrate creativity, imagination, and working together. It’s based on the book, The Dot, by Peter Reynold’s which is about a little girl Vashti who doubts her own ability in art and is uninspired. The teacher encourages and believes in the student even though the student doubts their own ability. The teacher encourages Vashti to just make a mark and sign it and so the story begins about a little girl who becomes inspired, more confident in herself, and helps others find their own creativity. Feel free to share how you celebrate Dot Day! Here's a fun song/video for you to watch with your kids: Check out this fabulous song here. Watch the author create a dot here and use it as a kick off to have children create their own dots. Visit Peter Reynold's Website here and check out some books, doodles, and digital drawings.
