I love A Year with the Book of Mormon from the Friend Magazine! Each month, children learn about a prophet, or hero, from the Book of Morm...
Over the past twenty years of teaching the Book of Mormon I’ve found that many people get confused in the storyline about the book of Omni. We know what happened to Nephi, and Jacob was his brother. But by the time we get to King Benjamin, many of us aren’t quite sure why Benjamin is in the land of Zarahemla, Limhi is in the land of Nephi and how they both relate to Mosiah1, Mosiah2, Zeniff, Noah, Abinadi and Alma1. My hope is to give a clear summary of the Book of Mormon storyline from Omni through Mosiah 25.
A simple craft activity to do with your kids or use as a teaching aid -- make the golden plates that Joseph Smith received from the angel Moroni
Use this Book of Mormon timeline in your Come Follow Me studies!
I've always been intrigued by the Gold Plates. From the story of Nephi getting Brass plates from the wicked king, Laban, to Moroni burying them, and ending with Joseph Smith being led to them and translating the words. Having said that, thinking of ideas for my cute Primary was fun this week as they are learning about the Book of Mormon and starting with it's introductory. So today we will be sharing ideas that might help inspire you with your Book of Mormon Singing Times :) 1-Write on the Gold Plates. Have you ever wanted to be like a prophet of old and WRITE ON the gold plates????? Right on! Me too!!! Today we get to! Before Primary, write down 5-6 songs on slips of paper and put them in a bag. Bring tin foil (spray painted gold), and have a small nail nearby. (You could also bring yellow pieces of posterboard/carstock/paper). Tape these one sheet at a time on the chalkboard. For Singing Time, have a child come up, pull a song title from the bag, and start to draw a depiction of the song on the "golden plates". Some examples of easy songs to draw: I Love to See the Temple, I'll Walk with You, Scripture Power, Once there was a Snowman, etc. Pictured in our example is Keep the Commandments. The other children in the Primary try to guess the song that is being drawn. The correct guesser gets to come lead the song (or draw the next one)! Then have the whole Primary sing that song :) 2-The Book of Mormon - Another testament of JESUS CHRIST. This Singing Time is to help the children understand that the purpose of the Book of Mormon is to bear testimony of Jesus Christ. Before Primary, randomly put 5-6 small pictures of Christ inserted into the pages of a Book of Mormon. Each having a song about Jesus Christ on the back. (Some examples of possible songs are: He Sent His Son, When Jesus Christ was Baptized, This is My Beloved Son, To Think about Jesus, When He Comes Again, If The Savior Stood Beside Me, I Lived in Heaven, He Died that we Might live Again). Explain that the Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ, as is the Bible. Also explain that the Book of Mormon is Christ centered, it's purpose to bring souls to Christ, and is about Christ. Call up a child to come flip through the pages of the Book of Mormon and find a picture of Jesus. Then sing the song that is written on the back. Show pictures of Christ as you sing. I believe there are 3,925 references to Christ in the Book of Mormon. There literally is not a more Christ-centered book in the world! 3-Build a Key-Stone as you Sing. Have some paper stones that build an arch on the primary table with a song title on the back (the ones pictured are cut out of a cereal box). Have a child come up, pick a stone and stick it on the chalkboard. Sing a song after each is placed. Leave the keystone as the last piece. In the Come Follow Me-for Primary manual it reads: Read to the children the following statement by Joseph Smith in the Introduction to the Book of Mormon: “The Book of Mormon [is] the keystone of our religion.” Explain that just as a keystone holds together the rest of an arch, our testimony of the Book of Mormon holds up and strengthens our testimony of other things, like Joseph Smith and the gospel. Pass out one of these handouts for them to take home and mark of with their family! (found HERE on lds.org) 4-Pages of the Gold Plates. The prophet, Joseph Smith, translated the words on the Gold Plates through the power of God. Let's turn our Primary Gold Plates and read the songs for Singing Time Today! Turn the pages of a play Gold Plates to reveal the next song to sing!!! These simple plates were made from wood, hangers, and gold paint! 5-Music Translation. Print out the hieroglyphic printouts HERE AND HERE from iheartprimarymusic. Display the "key" for all Primary children to see. Each symbol represents a number, so before Primary, choose what songs you'd like to sing and write down the page number from the Children's Songbook. At the beginning of Primary, explain that the Prophet, Joseph Smith, TRANSLATED the words on the plates into English through the power of God. It may be helpful to hold a representation of the plates as well as a Book of Mormon. During Singing Time, call up one child to be the "TRANSLATOR" (this child will be one who looks in the Children's Songbook for the song title translation). Put up the corresponding numbers to represent a song on the chalkboard. (For example, if you wanted to sing, I'm Trying to be Like Jesus, you would put up these representing the numbers seven and eight: Let the children shout out the page number, and then the "TRANSLATOR" finds the song title in the Songbook. Then, sing that song. Do any of these ideas help inspire you this week? We'd LOVE to hear from YOU!!! Good luck with your Singing Time!!! -iheartprimarymusic
Every now and then when I really like a quote from the lesson I make a journal sized handout for my students. Each time I make one I post it on my blog for others to use if they need to. Feel free to copy and paste it into your printing program. You can also right click and save it into your pictures. Most of them are in black in white so that they are ink friendly. I often print them on colored paper to make them a little more colorful. Enjoy! Lesson 2: Studying the Scriptures Here's a handout that I printed out and then gave out to groups of students. They were to come up with clever ways to get their scripture study in each day and then share their ideas with the class. Lesson 11: 1 Nephi 7 Lesson 12: 1 Nephi 8 Here is another version: I printed these out for my lesson and gave them to groups of students. Each group drew the portion that they were assigned. Then each group shared what they learned. Lesson 15 1 Nephi 14 LESSON 16 1 NEPHI 15 LESSON 17 1 Nephi 16 If you are looking for a craft to do with your class here is a link Lesson 20: 1 Nephi 19 Lesson 24: 2 Nephi 2 (Part 2) LESSON 25 2 Nephi 3 For this lesson we played the Zap game. Here are the printouts for my questions. To find out how to play Zap click here. Lesson 26: 2 Nephi 4 I had the students read through Nephi's psalm while listen to the BYU men's choir sing it (You Tube). I had them pick out their favorite verse, and then we voted on it. This is the one that one. I made print of it to give to them. I am having it professionally printed at Costco. Here it is in 3 different sizes: 8 1/2 x 11 5 x7 4x6 Lesson 32: 2 Nephi 12–15 I got this from LDS Seminary Teacher Group Sharon Prescott Haynie #2Nephi15 verse 20. Here is a very effective object lesson. Make one caramel apple and one caramel coated onion. You ask two kids to come forward and have a competition to see who can eat their caramel apple fastest. The moment the second kid gets into their onion, the competition unravels real quick. Read 2 Nephi 15:20 "Wo unto them that call evil good and good evil, that put darkness of light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" Discuss how things might look sweet but actually aren't. Discuss how Satan uses counterfeits for goodness. Hint: You cannot put the caramel on the onion the night before or it will get all weird and bubbly from the onion juices. In the past I used those caramel sheets you can find at the grocery store and just covered the onion right before seminary started. I added this print out to all of my apples: Lesson 38: 2 Nephi 28 We made of list of all the Spiritual Crocodiles that we could think of and wrote them on the crocodile below: Lesson 44 Jacob 2: 12-35 Lesson 45: Jacob 3–4 Lesson 56: Mosiah 7–8 I wanted a little more detailed map than the one in the manual so I put together this one. LESSON 66 Mosiah 26 #MOSIAH26 The Atonement of Jesus Christ “The Atonement of Jesus Christ,” Doctrinal Mastery Book of Mormon Teacher Material (2017) LESSON 67 Mosiah 27 #MOSIAH27 LESSON 77 Alma 12 #ALMA12 LESSON 83 Alma 19–20 In this lesson I did bubbles instead of ripples in the water. I gave the students bubbles to take home for fun. When they wrote in their journals I gave them this handout to go with the lesson. Here's a more in depth explanation of my lesson. LESSON 85 Alma 23–24 LESSON 93 Alma 36 LESSON 98 Alma 41 LESSON 102 Alma 49–51 LESSON 103 Alma 52–55 I played the game Zap with the students and here is a copy of the questions that I used. They are in order of the scriptures so that the students could follow along and find them easily. To create your own Zap game click here. LESSON 105 Alma 59–63 LESSON 112 Helaman 11–12 “Lesson 118: 3 Nephi 6–7,” Book of Mormon Seminary Teacher Manual (2017) LESSON 126 3 Nephi 17 LESSON 128 3 Nephi 19 LESSON 137 Mormon 1–2 LESSON 149 Ether 12:1–22 LESSON 155 MORONI 7:1–19 LESSON 156 Moroni 7:20–48 I also did a "Scripture Squeeze" with them, only I gave this handout to them and they wrote on it at their desk. The Book of Mormon’s rich accounts of warfare contain some of the most exciting and interesting material in the thousand-year narrative. These stories have captured the imagination of Latter-day Saints of all ages, from young children in Primary to popular fiction writers. Perhaps less recognized, these chapters have also caught the attention of some with both academic and professional military expertise. These scholars have found the Book of Mormon accounts of wartime strategy to be strikingly realistic.
This list was obtained from a blog post over at Gently Hew Stone. The first impression I got was to scrutinize the list but it appears that these were very wisely chosen. I did something similar back in the mission field where I created a pamphlet that summarized each book in the Book of Mormon.

Seminary is getting closer and closer! I've been busy preparing lessons, getting materials together, and (to be honest) kind of dreading getting up early. I think I've been a little spoiled this summer! Grumpy Cat always understands me. This year, along with the new curriculum, eight of the twenty-five Book of Mormon Scripture Mastery scriptures are different. Unfortunately this means that a lot of the materials are still in the process of being updated, and a lot of the free printables and things I've been using from other seminary teachers are no longer current. Bummer! So... I made a couple of my own. I figured I would post them here just in case there are any other seminary teachers looking for something like this. Feel free to print or edit them any way you like! I made this one to be the same size as the new Scripture Mastery cards. Last year some of my students (and myself, to tell the truth...) had a hard time keeping track of their cards, so this year I put them on rings and added this list to the ring. I figure it is a good way for them to have everything in one place so it's easy to pull out and hopefully won't get misplaced as easily. (Left click to enlarge, right click to save and print) To get the card the right size, I printed them as wallet sized pictures (on white cardstock). The tricky part is cutting them the right length because the new cards are kind of long. I messed up a couple of sheets, so... good luck! :) Also, because of the way the new SM cards were printed, the only way to punch holes in the cards without losing text is to do it in one of the bottom corners. Keep that in mind if you plan on putting them on rings! The finished product! I also made a 4x6 version for my students to use as bookmarks, especially since we don't have the new ones put out by the church yet. (Plus these are cuter... which is very important, am I right? :P) (Left click to enlarge, right click to save and print) I plan on printing this on the back so they have a place to keep track of the scriptures they passed off besides the poster at the front of the class. This is partially because we had a couple problems with people putting stickers in the wrong places... sometimes accidentally, sometimes not. ;) Last one... I have had this quote hanging on the wall in front of the classroom and decided to make one that was a little more eye-catching (but still simple). The colors are a little dark in the download because my printer tends to print things lighter than they should be, so feel free to tweak the colors if it doesn't print quite the way you want. Here's how it looks in real life. See what I mean? Well, there you have it! Let me know if you have any questions! Also, I plan on making (and posting) more seminary printables so if you have suggestions or ideas feel free to shoot me a comment or email.

We all know the Primary answers to read the scriptures and pray every day. But even though the call to read the scriptures is easy in theory, it is something that we often need to make a renewed effort to keep up with.
For this lesson I decided to try something different. It is like 6 or 7 printed pages long. And I thought having a visual aid might help them enjoy and remember it better. So I remembered those Flannel boards that I've seen around with felt characters. And I knew it would be easy, cheap, and fun for them. (If I had access to all my crafting supplies. I may have done things differently.) I think a magnet board would be even better because you could use all these people at church on the chalkboards for primary lessons. I think I will eventually laminate (my laminator is in storage) and put magnets on the back and turn the flannel board into a magnet board. But for the time being, this is fast and working really great! To make a flannel board you need a few supplies: 1) a board or painting canvas (use a 40% off coupon at Joanns or Michaels) 2) 1 yard or less of your choice of color flannel. (I have heard blue or black is best) I did white. I wish I would have listened : ) 3) Felt sticky sheets (found in the craft kid section) 4) A colored printer 5) a staple gun or if you don't have access to one or yours is in storage ; ) You could use packing tape for a temporary fix. Please borrow a staple gun. Using tape totally cracked me up! You just want to pull it as tight as you can so the flannel is snug on your board. Then I printed out the pictures from the digital copy HERE on to cardstock. Then I cut up all the pictures and numbered them. There were a lot so it would be easy to mix them up. Then I cut up rectangles of the sticky felt and stuck them on. It would be better to have just stuck all the cut out pictures on to the sticky side of felt so that they were completely covered in felt. But I was in a hurry and didn't want to use pages and pages of felt on one story. Here you see I numbered them and stuck on the sticky felt. Here I am telling the story and setting the felt pictures onto the flannel board. I would let the kids help put them on as we went along. They really enjoyed it! NOTE: If you want actual Book of Mormon Characters you can get FREE ones... Yes I said FREE here on this amazing blog! She doesn't have the lessons for each book of mormon story. They are from Friend Magazine stories. But a lot of them go with the stories. And Guess what she has Old Testament and New Testament ones too!! I found one for the Brass plates and did it along side all the printed cards you see above on the board. I think an adorable craft or treat would be those cute BRASS PLATES candy I found on my Pinterest. I am so bummed the link was broken and doesn't lead to anyone. So if anyone know who deserves credit or has a tutorial let me know. Here's a picture for inspiration though:

Today's FHE Lesson was supposed to be a Family History Family Home Evening but . . . Yesterday during our Teachings for Our Times Relief Society Lesson we were shown this picture of Samuel the Lamanite. As my sister Amber pointed out, this picture opens the door for a Perfect Object Lesson. (This artwork is available at Real Hero Poster Link or Seagull Book and Tape.) They have featured both men and women in the scriptures. They truly are REAL HEROES for our children to pattern their lives after. Opening Prayer: Scripture: "Have I not commanded the? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest." Joshua 1:9 Song: "Dare to Do Right" Children's Songbook Page 158 Story: (Tell the Story of Samuel the Lamanite.) 1 And now, it came to pass that there were many who heard the words of Samuel, the Lamanite, which he spake upon the walls of the city... 2 But as many as there were who did not believe in the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither with their arrows. 3 Now when they saw that they could not hit him, there were many more who did believe on his words, insomuch that they went away unto Nephi to be baptized. Object Lesson: Put the picture of Samuel the Lamanite up on the wall. Print and cut out the arrows. I made some arrows with some ideas for you to use as well as some blank ones that you can fill in on your own. Now ask your family the question below: "What are some of the temptations Satan is throwing at us today?" Take turns having your children stand by the wall next to the picture of Samuel the Lamanite. As family members give their answers, have them put the arrows up on the wall next to the child. (They will be standing as if they were Samuel.) Ask family members: "What can we do to make sure that we don't get hit by the temptations of our day?" "What can we do to have the Spirit of the Lord with us?" Remind your family that when we put our Faith in the Lord and show courage, WE CAN STAND AS SAMUEL DID AND NOT BE HIT! Closing Prayer: Don't Forget to take pictures of your children standing against the wall with the arrows. This will serve as a reminder for them to be strong, to have faith, and courage to stand up for what is right! Here's the PDF: Samuel the Lamanite FHE Lesson Packet PDF Here's the TREAT/GAME: Spider's on a String Halloween-Style Donut Eating Contest! Tie the donuts to a string and have family members try to eat the entire donut without using their hands! (I put a plastic tablecloth under the donuts to make the clean up go FASTER!) You Will Need: Chocolate Covered Donuts (You can use large or small ones.) Pretzel Sticks Butcher's Twine M&M's and Milk Chocolate Chips To Make Your Donut Spiders: Stick the pretzels into the sides of the donut. Dip the M&M's into melted chocolate chips and add them to the donuts to make the spider's eyes. I used some mini chips for the eyeball centers. Stick eyeball centers on with the melted chocolate as well. Put a string through the center and tie it to a main line, and you're ready to play. Remember: NO HANDS! Have a GREAT NIGHT!
