At first glance, these look like vintage board games one might find on ebay, complete with frayed corners and masking tape holding them together. But look a little closer and you'll see that they are the impressive photo realistic paintings of Missouri based artist Tim Liddy. Using oil paints and enamel Tim recreates nostalgic Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley board games- some of which are no longer made and others that are still family favorites, on copper. Tim will take commissions as well. The prices for these works vary from $3,000 to $11,000 + depending upon size. Tim Liddy
This year, our district is moving away from memorizing spelling words and more towards a word study approach that will be fully implemented next year. THIS year has been a transition of sorts....teachers in grades 1-5 give a spelling pretest that targets a specific pattern. If they receive a 90% or above, they can choose to be exempt from spelling homework and Friday's assessment. For students that did not receive 90% on the pretest, they are given a spelling menu/choice board and are responsible for completing 3 activities. I've created spelling menus and SB activities for each six weeks. Since we are in our last six weeks, I went ahead and created a BIG choice board and wanted to share it with you. I'd love to hear if any of your districts are transitioning from "spelling" (like we've all grown up with) to a word study approach....how's it going? What resources are you guys using? Have you seen improvement in writing/incorporation of concepts taught? Just curious.... Anyway, here is a spelling choice board you can use for grades 3-5. Use if you'd like! ~Erin

What Makes the Best Anchor Charts? If I see students referring back, again and again, to an anchor chart in my classroom, I know the space on my classroom wall is being used well. On the other hand, if an anchor chart rarely gets a second glance, the space is wasted. As difficult as it is to take down a chart you spent time and energy making, and all teachers know we do not have much of either, the space is best used for a more effective chart or resource. Tips for making anchor charts Focus on one objective The chart should be easy to read Keep it simple Use MNEMONICs when possible The anchor chart should be pleasing to the eye The anchor charts, below, are among the top charts that are tried and true resources for students year after year!!
Here's a 1979 shopping carrier bag from W. Smith, a leading newsagent, stationers and music shop. When Winston Smith retired from the Records Department at the Ministry of Truth, he decided to open his own high-street Records Department in Scarfolk. Daily newspapers were updated every 3 minutes and anyone possessing an out-of-date edition was arrested, prosecuted for dissent, and declared a "Scarfnot" (An "unperson" in Scarfolk). Books were also constantly rewritten and "unbook" tokens were available. These tokens could be exchanged for any given book's amended pages. Indeed, some books were corrected so frequently that maintaining a single book could run into hundreds if not thousands of pounds. A book's contents could change drastically. For example, by 1979, the erotic sci-fi thriller, "Affordable Brothel of the 9th Moon of Jupiter," bore little resemblance to its first edition, which was originally titled the "New Testament," a story about a Galilean carpenter who opens a budget furniture store in Sweden. Most people found it easier not to buy or read books. Items for sale week of 06/11/1979: All magazines/comics - 65p: Women Weakly (Highlighting the disruptive and damaging role of women in society). Telescreen Fun (A weekly cartoon strip singling out individual children and deriding them for personal indiscretions). Rats 'n' Laughs (Hilarious images of people's expressions when hungry rats in cages are attached to their faces. Plus prisoners' letters). Music dept: "It's Inner Party Time!" and other public confession LPs & tapes - £3.99.
