Welcome to the Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew Blog Hop, where every month a Christmas inspired project is shared so you can get a jump start on the holidays! Click the button to the left to see other projects from past hostesses. Today I am sharing a tutorial for this Modern Improv Christmas Wreath mini. It looks rather nice on the door, no? When I was contemplating what kind of project I wanted to create for this blog hop, I remembered how many of my friends don't have the space to store a holiday wreath year round while waiting for the holidays. Everyone is short on storage, but especially those that live in apartments, condos, etc. This wreath is still festive enough to put on your door, yet will roll up quite compactly! In fact, you could make one for each month and it still wouldn't fill up the same amount of space as one regular holiday wreath! Before I get to the tutorial, let's talk about the prize for this month's link up! You will need: 4 copies of the wheel pattern. Download it HERE. Now, fellow crafters, I am not a computer genius. If you recall our grandmothers or great grandmothers might have swapped quilt pattern templates made out of cereal boxes and sent through the mail --- this is the computer version of that! My EQ7 doesn't always print out a nice, print ready, pretty copy of things and I just haven't gotten around to learning Adobe anything. You will also need: 12.5 inch x WOF background various scraps (mostly green) 24 inch piece of backing fabric 24 inch piece of batting approximately 112 inches of binding optional loop of fabric (mine was 7.5 inches long) optional bow (you choose the size) First, print out the templates and cut them up, leaving a little space around the seam allowances. We will be working with the wedges first. Get those scraps ready! I pulled out all my small green scraps. This project is perfect for those "crumbs" you were wondering why you keep. All shapes and sizes can be used in this project, but small scraps will give you the most variety. If you have done paper piecing before, this will look familiar. Place you first scrap Right Side UP on the Wrong Side of the paper wedge. I like to use a little washable glue to hold it in place. OH, and shorten your stitch length to about 1.5, like you would in paper piecing. I forgot to do this, and removing the paper later sure was a pain. Why do we even have the paper? I found the paper is needed to provide stability to all those small scraps during the improv process. It is easy for them to get distorted without it. Place your next piece of fabric, Right Side DOWN on the first and sew into place using approximately a 1/4 inch seam. Yes, sew the fabric right to the paper. Finger press that open. NO, don't get up to press it with the iron! It is unnecessary and unless you are trying to get some exercise, don't bother. Just finger press it open and grab your next piece of fabric. Place it Right Side down, and sew it into place. Finger press open and continue with your next piece of fabric. Now is probably a good time to mention: I've taken some improv classes where the instructors really encourage you to ponder the placement of each fabric piece in the project. I don't recommend that for this project. Think about it a little, but there is no need to meditate for 30 minutes about each scrap. As long as each wedge ends up with a decent balance of color, you should be OK. You might notice that I started this wedge with a piece of pink. I wanted my wreath to look like it had little, colored lights in it, so I started most of my wedges with a little splash of color. Around and around you will go. You do not have to line up your pieces perfectly with what you have already sewn. As long as the piece you are putting down covers the edge of what you already have, and you sew it with 1/4 inch seam, you should be OK. If you have ever done an Improv Quilt As You Go technique, this is the same thing. If you haven't, after this project you are fully qualified! Keep going until you have covered your entire wedge piece. It should look something like this. You can do each wedge one at a time, or I like to chain piece mine. I glued a little scrap of colored fabric randomly on each wedge and just chain pieced all my wedges at the same time. It does make for a more quick, and random, improv process. When you have all your wedges done, they will look something like this! What a mess! Now take them over to the cutting surface and trim off the edges, leaving a 1/4 inch seam!!! Ah, that's better. Look how sharp those wedges look now! OK, now the fun part. Lay them out and start arranging the wedges as you like. Each wedge is labeled "B" through "G", but they are completely identical, so mix them up as you like. I find taking a black and white photo with my phone helps me get a nice balance with the values of green. When you get a configuration that you like, piece together six wedges to form a quarter circle. Press these seams open, and then remove the papers from the back. Now get out that WOF background fabric and your "A" and "H" templates. Keeping the folded fabric, well folded, put your "H" template near the selvage end. Either carefully use your rotary cutter and ruler to cut out the "H" piece, or trace the template onto the fabric and cut it out using your favorite method. By keeping the fabric folded, you get two "H's" with one cut. Use your "H" template again, but slide it down the fabric a bit to give you enough room to fit template "A" in the football shaped scrap that will be created in between the "H's" you cut. I find this helps use the fabric more efficiently, and the scrap that is created near the fold of the fabric will be big enough to use in another project. When you are done cutting this second "H" out, you should have four "H" pieces total. Place your "A" template on the football shaped scrap. There should be enough room to place it a second time and thus get the four "A" pieces you need. There you go! And like I said, the scrap that is left over near the fold is a good size, so you can use it in another project later. Now take your "A" and "H" pieces and fold them in half, and finger press. We are going to work with the "A" piece first. Line up the crease from your finger pressing with the center seam of your wedge quarter circle. Pin in place. Now pin the edges to line up, and put a pin in each seam. I forgot to take a picture, but you can get the idea below. It will want to stay bunched up in a curve, let it! Sew a 1/4 inch seam all around this curved piece. Don't try to flatten out the curled up piece, just make sure the part going under the presser foot is straight and pivot it slightly around the curve as needed. When you are done, press the seam toward the background. I know this means you will see the seam through the white, but trust me, all those crazy improv seams want to have their way. Just go with it! Now take your "H" piece and line up the center crease with the center seam of your wedges. THIS time, pin in place from the wedge side of the fabric! Like this! I like to pin the center, then the far edges, every seam, and in between each seam. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam all around. I know pinning is a pain, but I am NOT one of those people that can hold my pieces of fabric together and just feed them through the machine and end up with the perfect curved piecing. Again, press toward the background. Doesn't that look pretty? Now repeat for your other three wedge quarters, and then sew the four blocks together. Press any seams open. Add your batting and backing and quilt as desired. I considered doing some of my usual FMQ swirls or paisleys for this project, but the modern aspect led me in the direction of straight line quilting. Before you add your binding, consider adding a little loop to the back of your quilt (by the center seam), so you have something to hang your wreath from. If you do this before adding your binding to the front, the loop will be secured by two sets of stitches (when you sew the binding to the front, and when you sew it to the back). Next, hang your pretty wreath on your door! Or give it to a friend that lives in an apartment, condo, or assisted living (this would really brighten up one of those places). Hello Stamping Friends! Today, I’m super-excited to share the July 2022 Stamping Sunday Blog Hop. This hop is hosted by Sara Levin and we share on the second Sunday of every month. Our theme for the month is “Paper Perfection” where we are showcasing all of the fabulous Designer Series Papers from the Stampin’ Up!® Annual Catalog. Welcome, I’m so happy you are here today! When it came to picking a pack of Designer Series Paper for this blog hop, I have to admit, I had a tough time. I am a huge fan off ALL patterned paper and it is the one craft supply that I probably buy the most of. Do I always USE it? That’s a story for a different day. I would call myself more of a “curator of an extensive collection of DSP". One of my goals this year has been to actually use more, because let’s be honest, pretty paper shouldn’t be hidden in your craft room, right? After much contemplation, I decided to feature the He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper along with the coordinating He’s All That Bundle for my projects today. The main reason is that this Specialty DSP not only has those awesome patterns that I love so much, but this particular pack also has two sheets of coordinating die-cut images. Talk about card making made easy! If you are like me and often struggle to create masculine cards, this is a great suite of products. All of the measurements for my project are listed below and there is a full supply list at the very end of this blog post. My first project is a fun fold card. This fold is not super complicated but is great to showcase different patterns of DSP on a card. I added lots of additional layers, because that’s how I roll. In addition to the products in the He’s the Man Suite, I also used the Tailor Made Tags Dies. Partially because I thought they would add some fun detail to the card. Also because I bought them a while ago and haven’t used them yet. The sentiment on the card comes from the die-cuts in the DSP. So easy and I love the detail! The little star element also came from the DSP. It was so easy layer the elements together for a fun focal image! Card Measurements and Details: Early Espresso Card Base: 4-1/4” x 7-1/4”, scored at 5-1/2” Cajun Craze Cardstock (front panel): 2-7/8” x 5-3/8” He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (front panel): 2-3/4” x 5-1/4” Early Espresso Cardstock (right side): 4” x 3-3/4”, score on long side at 1/2” (this tab will tuck under the Basic White layer inside the card to create the fun fold) Cajun Craze Cardstock (right panel): 3-3/8” x 3-5/8” He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (right panel): 3-1/4” x 3-1/2” Cajun Craze Cardstock: scrap to die cut tag from Tailor Made Tags Dies Mint Macaron Cardstock: scrap to die cut two banners from All That Dies He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper: Sentiment circle and Cajun Craze star from die cut images Early Espresso Faux Suede Trim, Crumb Cake Baker’s Twine and Rustic Metallic Adhesive Backed Dots Basic White Cardstock (inside card): 4” x 5-1/4”, add a tree die cut from the He’s the Man Specialty DSP He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (inside card): 1/2” x 5-3/8” Here’s a little peek inside the card! I added in a die-cut tree from the He’s All That Specialty Designer Series Paper and left the rest blank for a handwritten note. I can’t say enough how much I enjoy the die-cut elements that come in this DSP pack. They are awesome accents and really make it easy to dress up a card in a snap! For my second project, I used three additional pattens of that awesome He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper. Since I used the Tailor Made Tags Dies on the first card, I wanted to carry them through to this project as well. I just love that dotted border on the edges of the tags! I also added some Crumb Cake ink around the edges for a little distressed detail and also added some ink “splatters” using a Dark Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blends marker. Those little star accents come from the die cuts in the DSP pack. I popped them up and added Wink of Stella for added sparkle. Card Measurements and Details: Cajun Craze Card Base: 4-1/4” x 11”, scored at 5-1/2” Early Espresso Cardstock: 4” x 5-1/4” He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (car pattern): 3-7/8” x 5-1/8” He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (plaid pattern): 3-7/8” x 1-3/4” He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper (striped pattern): scrap to die cut tag from Tailor Made Tag Dies Crumb Cake Cardstock: scrap to die cut tag from Tailor Made Tag Dies, stamp image in Early Espresso ink, use sponge dauber to distress edges with Crumb Cake ink and flick some ink “splatters” using Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blends Early Espresso Cardstock: scrap to die cut the top of tag detail from Tailor Made Tag Dies He’s the Man Specialty Designer Series Paper: die cut stars Early Espresso Faux Suede Trim, Crumb Cake Baker’s Twine and Rustic Metallic Adhesive Backed Dots I also have a THIRD bonus card to share with you. This card features another way to use the bundle and that awesome DSP. The color combo is Basic Black, Sahara Sand and Basic White. I also brought in the metallic embellishments and the twine…although that detail on the twine took a LONG time to position where I wanted it. The Kit Includes: 6x8 clear stamp set 20 Frame Cuts 2 Fancy Dies Purple Sparkle Embossing Powder Clear Embossing & Watermark Ink Cube Lavender Washi Tape 5 Mini Clothespins ***************************************** This kit just screams RAINBOW so my first card shows off the main kit. I stamped the fun crafty images down the left side with Copic friendly ink. Using Copics in rainbow colors, the images were loosely colored and highlighted with a N0 Copic. To fill some of the white space in between the images, the outline heart was stamped. The sentiment (from Crafty Messages) was stamped in bold black across the panel. ***************************************** My second card uses some of the add-ons from this month's kit. I ADORE the Crafting Border Fancy Die! The die was cut out of white cardstock and set aside. To a white note card, strips of rainbow colored cardstock in 1/2" strips were adhered to the front. After adhering the crafty frame, a sentiment from Crafty Messages was stamped in bold black ink and a few black gems were adhered. ***************************************** My third card goes back to my cross stitching days! I know I stitched many panels back in the day and what better than a rainbow heart panel! The stitched heart from Cross Stitch Patterns was stamped in rainbow inks onto a panel. I wanted my card to look like a frame piece of art. Using the new Wood Frame Infinity Dies, I die cut one of them out of kraft cardstock. The frame was added with foam adhesive. (Link your project on the SB Blog before 31/11/12) So this month we want you to show us your white creations :) For my card I've been inspired by a little bit of sparkle as well as stars and snowflakes. Die cut the second largest star from Smooth White card and add a good layer of Art Glitter dries Clear adhesive. Sprinkle with the Diamond Dust and leave until the glue is dry before shaking off any excess glitter. This beautiful glitter catches the light and is just about the prettiest I've tried :). Take a piece of smooth white card cut to 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" and emboss with any seasonal e.f. I used a Cuttlebug Snowflakes one but the Cuttlebug Stars would have been perfect :)! Using the largest star die, die cut a star shape, off the page. It helps to use the glittered star to position this cut. Wrap some white ribbon around the embossed layer, finishing with a bow. Add plenty of foam adhesive squares to the back of the cut layer and position on a card base. Adhere the glittered star within the large die cut space. Zip Dry glue is my choice of wet glue, it holds very well once dry but gives you enough time to position things correctly. Die cut the letters to spell JOY from smooth white card and emboss with a Swiss dots e.f. before adding to the card front with more adhesive foam. Hey there, it's time for Taylored Expressions August Stamp of the Month Blog Hop! I absolutely HAD to have this set as soon as I saw it! Our friends own a beautiful piece of land up the river, so we camp all summer long. Hubby put in a "golf course" a couple years ago, so we always have something fun to do...golf, swimming, croquet, darts...or just sitting around the fire visiting...did I say eating? Can't forget that! *grin* My step-brother usually brings my nieces up to the property 2-3 times during the summer. They are adorable girls and a lot of fun to be with! Their last trip to see us is usually for Labor Day, so I made this to give to the them. They are CRAZY for s'mores! In fact, they make "gourmet s'mores"! I think out of all of their experiments, my favorite has been the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup S'mores! *yum* The stick and marshmallows were die cut then colored with Copic markers. A circle Nestie was cut then sponged with Peanut Brittle before being removed from the die. The marshmallows were glued to the stick then the stick was popped up on foam. I made this fun Halloween Invitation. I started this project with the NEW Tri-Fold Coffin Card which also happens to be FREE TODAY ONLY! You can get it HERE I cut it out with my Cameo along with 4 mat layers. 1 for the outside and 3 for the inside. I cut the NEW Walking Mummy and pop dotted him to the front of the card. I heat embossed the sentiment from the NEW Invitations Galore stamp set and added black brads to each corner of the mat. For the inside mats, I stamped each top and bottom using the Halloween Designer Tapes and the mummy from the Too Cute To Spook. I stamped the side panels with the Halloween Panels and colored the images with Copic Markers. I used the Invitations Galore stamp set to stamp all the invitation details except for the "Halloween" sentiment which is from the Happy Hello Add On.
