If Jesus were here today, in 2024 - I don't believe we would find Him in the churches. He would minister on the streets, in the prisons, healing in hospitals, and in the bars. When we read story after story in the Bible, Jesus met people right where they were, loved them, healed them, and

For this Jacob & Esau lesson, I set up areas in the classroom and we acted out the lesson. I used the tent that is always up for 'Isaac' to sit in. I set up cooking utensils, the fire and pot for Jacob, then 'Rebekah to cook. I brought a crock pot of meat cooked to add to the sensory part of the lesson. I had a scroll for Jacob and a bow and arrows for Esau. Also, I made arm and neck coverings for 'Jacob' to wear. Most of these are items that I have used for probably 20 years! Review: Last week we learned about Abraham’s servant traveling to another country to find Isaac a wife. He found her by a well. Rebekah had gone there to get water and when she offered Abraham's servant water and enough for his camels, he knew that Rebekah was the right woman for Isaac. Rebekah was also very beautiful. Abraham's servant went to Rebekah's house and told her brother, Laban and her mother why he was there. Abraham's servant gave Rebekah gold and silver jewelry, and he gave clothes and gifts to her family. Rebekah left her home with Abraham's servant to be with Isaac and they saw Isaac while he was in the field. Rebekah put on her veil to cover her face. Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah and he loved her. Abraham lived 175 years. Today's lesson is found in Genesis 25:24-34 & chapter 27. Isaac and Rebekah didn't have a baby for 20 years, and then they had twins! They didn’t look alike at all. The first baby was all hairy and red and they called him Esau which means red. Then his brother was born. They named him Jacob. Jacob means ‘holder of the heel.’ Isaac was 60 when they were born. God told Rebekah that even though Jacob was the younger son, he would have the birthright. ** Usually, the older son received the birthright. A birthright in Bible times was a custom that the oldest received 2 different blessings. The things that you have around you, like money, land, food and animals were given to the oldest twice as much as the other children the father has. The firstborn was also considered head of the family. The other part of the blessing, being the oldest, meant he offered the sacrifices and taught the family about God. Eventually, these men were ancestors to Jesus. The boys grew up and Esau was a skillful hunter. He liked to be outside. He was a big strong man with hair all over him. Isaac loved Esau the most. But Jacob liked to stay inside in the tent. And Rebekah love Jacob the most because he was a gentle man and stayed in the tents. One day Jacob cooked a stew and when Esau came in from the field, he was so hungry and tired, Esau asked Jacob for some of the stew. Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright and you can have some.” Esau replied to Jacob “Well, I’m so hungry I’m about to die anyway, so why not?” Jacob gave Esau bread and stew, and then Esau was sorry that he had made the trade. (Genesis 27:1) Years later Isaac was sick and couldn’t see well. Isaac called the oldest son, Esau in to see him. Isaac was also very rich and didn’t think he was going to live much longer. Isaac told Esau "Go hunt a deer and cook it for me as I like it and bring it to me." Rebekah heard this and told Jacob. She told Jacob to get two goats and she would cook them for Isaac how he liked it. After the meat was cooked, Rebekah put clothing on Jacob and fur from a goat on his hands and neck to make him hairy like his brother Esau. Rebekah wanted Jacob to fool Isaac! So, that is what Jacob did. Jacob told Isaac that he was his brother, Esau. When Isaac asked Jacob how he found the meat so fast, Jacob replied that God put it there for him. Isaac said, “Come over here and let me feel you to see if you are Esau.” Isaac said, “You sound like Jacob, but feel like Esau.” Isaac ate the meat and gave the blessing to Jacob that should have gone to the firstborn son, Esau. As soon as Isaac was done with the blessing, Esau came in from hunting and took the food in to Isaac. Isaac said “I have already eaten and given the blessing. Your brother came in and deceived me.” Esau was so angry with Jacob; Esau said he would kill Jacob. Rebekah heard about this and sent Jacob to her brother’s house to keep Jacob safe until Esau wasn’t so angry. You can print this worksheet that I made for this lesson. SPECIAL SONG: Read, Read Every Day (see Read, Read Every Day - February 2014 - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #1 on this blog. Click on orange circle to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Bible map, whiteboard, Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: After Paul had stayed in Corinth a good long while, he said goodbye to the church in Corinth and set sail to Syria. He sailed on to Ephesus with his good friends, Aquila and Priscilla, who were also members of the Lord's church and hard workers in the kingdom of God. When they arrived in Ephesus, Paul left Aquila and Priscilla and guess where he went? That's right! Paul went to the place he usually went when he came to a new city--he went to the synagogue and preached to the Jews. The Jews wanted Paul to stay longer and talk to them, but Paul had planned to be in Jerusalem for the feast, so he left Aquila and Priscilla in Ephesus and set sail for another city named Caesarea. When Paul arrived in Caesarea and had checked on the church there, he went farther down to Antioch. After staying in Antioch a while, he went all around Galatia and Phrygia and strengthened the disciples by preaching and teaching to them the Word of the Lord. Meanwhile, Aquila and Priscilla were still in Ephesus. In that city, there was a Jew whose name was Apollos. Apollos had been born in Alexandria and was eloquent which meant that he spoke very well. Another very important thing about Apollos was that he was mighty in the scriptures. He knew God's Word and told others about the things he knew. Since he could speak well and knew the scriptures, he was an excellent preacher. What made him even a better preacher was that he was instructed in the way of the Lord and he was fervent in the spirit. He was very serious about preaching and teaching the things concerning the Lord. However, there was one thing that Apollos did not know. He did not know or teach about the baptism Jesus which was authorized in the great commission and found in Matthew 28:19, 20. John did baptize, but since the cross of Christ, there is now only one baptism and that is the one that is authorized by and is in the name of Jesus (Ephesians 4:5; Acts 19:1-5). In our next lesson, we will see that there were about twelve men who were baptized in John's baptism and what they did about it. When Aquila and Priscilla heard Apollos boldly preaching John's baptism in the synagogue, they quietly took Apollos aside and taught him the way of God more perfectly. When Apollo was planning on traveling through Achaia, the brethren of the Lord's church wrote letters for him, encouraging other congregations to receive or accept him and listen to his preaching. Apollos helped many of the disciples believe by preaching Jesus and convincing the Jews that Jesus was the Christ by showing them scriptures. "Older Student" Tips: Read Acts 18:23. Paul begins his third missionary journey, stregthening the churches and converting souls. There are many cities mentioned in this lesson. Beginning in Corinth, find those cities on a Bible map that were mentioned in Acts 1818-28. Follow the steps of Paul, Aquila and Priscilla, and Apollos. Read Acts 18:24-28 and write on the whiteboard the description of Apollos. Alexandria, which was in Egypt and the birthplace of Apollos, was known for its grand library at a time when there was not a library in many cities. It is interesting to note that Aquila and Priscilla took Apollos aside privately to talk about important matters. Apollos, also, accepted their instruction. ACTIVITY: Apollos Materials needed: 9" x 12" tan construction paper, pencil, marker, crayons. Hand out tan paper. Towards the bottom of the paper, students traces one hand, stopping just short of finishing the hand at the little finger. The student places their little finger on the paper again, next to the already traced little finger. Trace extra little finger. This should be a hand with six fingers! With marker, trace over all six fingers and the hand. At the top of the paper, write "6 Things We Know About Apollos." At the bottom of the paper, write "Acts 18:24-28." In the middle of the hand, write "APOLLOS." Beginning with the extra little finger, write "born in Alexandria." On the next finger, write "spoke well." On the next finger, write "Mighty in the scriptures." On the next finger, write "Instructed in the way of the Lord." On the next finger, write "fervent in the spirit." On thumb, write "Aquila and Priscilla taught him the way of God more perfectly." Color. In case the student writes something incorrectly on a finger, simply trace that exact finger again on a scrap of tan paper, write the words correctly on the finger, cut out the finger, color again, and glue on top of the incorrect words. Saves time and energy by not needing to re-create the whole project. (I made a mistake on the "mighty in the scriptures" finger. Can you tell?) If students' fingers are too small to write words, perhaps the Bible teacher can type or write the words on paper in advance, then cut and paste on fingers.
The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible verse games for kids! Here is one called “Bible Book Relay” to help learn 119:89 and Isaiah 40:8.
I placed post it notes on the wall of the cultural hall containing one word or punctuation mark from 1 Corinthians 10:13. The class was divided in to teams so I did the same for both teams but on opposite sides of the cultural hall. When I said go, they had to race all the words down to the other end of the cultural hall and place them in order. It was a very effective way to review the scripture. My only advice is to make smaller teams. I have 24 students so I should have made 4 teams rather than 2. When this was complete, there was another relay where the team had to put the books of the New Testament in order (see next post) Again, very effective, but smaller teams are recommended.
The New Testament of the Bible in Revelation Chapter 21 describes the New Jerusalem (also known as Zion). It is described as having 12 different foundations to its walls, each a different precious stone, with the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb in them (Revelation 21:14, 19-20). New Jerusalem will have 12 gates, each one a pearl, with 3 in each cardinal direction: East, North, South, West (Revelation 21:12-13, 21). The city is described as "pure gold" with streets of gold (Revelation 21:18, 21). These scriptures inspired this New Jerusalem jewelry. It is made with genuine gemstones and cultured freshwater pearls. For me, it is a reminder of hope for a better and glorious future. The exact stones that John saw in this revelation are debatable because stones had different names anciently than they do today. These are the stones from the King James Version of the Bible and the stones used in this jewelry: The first foundation was jasper (Revelation 21:19). The first stone used in the jewelry is red jasper. The second, sapphire (Revelation 21:19). Scholars and gemologists tend to agree that the stone that was anciently referred to as sapphire is what we now call Lapis Lazuli. Lapis Lazuli is used in this jewelry. The third, a chalcedony (Revelation 21:19). Chalcedony is used in this jewelry. The fourth, an emerald (Revelation 21:19). Many believe this is referring to green jade. Green jade is used in this jewelry. The fifth, sardonyx (Revelation 21:20). This is believed to be Onyx today. The old testament in Exodus also uses the word sardonyx to describe what we call onyx today. Onyx is used in this jewelry. The sixth, sardius (Revelation 21:20). This is believed to be Sardonyx today. Sardonyx is used in this jewelry. The seventh, chrysolite (Revelation 21:20). This is possibly what we call Peridot. Peridot is used in this jewelry. The eighth, beryl (Revelation 21:20). Beryl has different colors. Aquamarine is light blue beryl and is used in this jewelry. The ninth, a topaz (Revelation 21:20). This is probably referring to a golden yellow stone. Citrine is used in this jewelry. The tenth, a chrysoprasus (Revelation 21:20). Chrysoprase, also known as Australian Jade, is used in this jewelry. The eleventh, a jacinth (Revelation 21:20). This could be Lavender Jade. The stone used in this jewelry is lavender dyed Malaysia jade. The twelfth, an amethyst (Revelation 21:20). Amethyst is used in this jewelry. Available in several metal choices: gold color, silver color, stainless steel, real gold-plated, gold-filled, and sterling silver. The gold and silver colored metal has brass or stainless steel bases. The cord used in the gold-filled necklace and anklet is the same cord used in the gold-plated versions and is 24K gold plated stainless steel. The pieces in the gold-plated jewelry are either 18K gold plated brass or 24K gold plated stainless steel. The gold-filled pieces are 14K gold-filled. Necklace: Made to 16 inches with a 2 inch extension so the necklace can be between 16 and 18 inches long. If you want a different size, let me know in the Personalization box. Bracelet: Comes with a stretchy elastic cord. Made to about 7.4 inches long. 7 inches is the average women's bracelet size. If you want a different size, let me know in the Personalization box. If you prefer a bracelet with a clasp, order the anklet and enter your bracelet size into the Personalization box, or order the anklet and enter "bracelet with clasp" in the Personalization box and the bracelet will be made to about 6.75 inches with a 1 inch extension chain. Earrings: Highlight the pearl since that is the gate that we must enter through to get inside the New Jerusalem. Anklet: Made 8.25 inches long with a 1.5 inch extension chain so that the length can be varied between 8.25 inches and 9.75 inches. If you would like a different size, let me know in the Personalization box. If you are ordering an anklet in order to get a bracelet with clasp, you can enter "bracelet with clasp" in the Personalization box and the bracelet will be made to about 6.75 inches with a 1 inch extension chain. Comes in a cardboard jewelry box with a description of New Jerusalem using the gemstone names used today that are in the jewelry. The box color and size may be different from what is pictured, but it will be of similar size and quality and will contain a jewelry sponge holder as shown in the picture. Over the last couple weeks, our devotions in Long Story Short by Marty Machowski have been about Jacob and Esau. These are some of those stories where the Bible just tells us what happened without passing judgment on the main characters, which leaves us with a bit of explaining to do
