Gideon army of 300 Bible lesson. Learn that God can do much with a few. Free printable lesson includes story, worksheets, colouring pages and more.
Gideon is so much fun for the students! This is a lesson with a lot of visuals, and they are able to up, moving around and loud!
We are continuing our lessons on the Judges. This week's lesson is about Gideon. Gideon was a humble Judge with a great amount of Faith. He did as God commanded and had victory over the Midianites. God told Gideon how to win the battle against the Midianites and Gideon did just as he was told. 300 men and Gideon went into battle with pitchers, torches and horns. They were victorious! Our "Take Home" activity is a Torch. It is made from a paper towel tube, paper (wrapped around the tube), and tissue paper. The kiddos will color the paper that wraps around the paper towel tube and then we will assemble them with a bit of glue and tape in class. Our memory verse this week is Judges 7:8...We will sing it to the tune "The Law of the Lord." I know the kiddos will have it memorized before leaving class on Sunday. That makes it easy for their parent to help them review the verse with them, so they will be ready for Wednesday. Our Review game for this week is based off the fact that Gideon and his arm carried torches. So, the kiddos will attach flames to the top of the torches if they answer a question from the story correctly. There is velcro dots on the board and on the back of the flames so it is easy for them to attach the flame to the torch. On Wednesday Evening the kiddos will be coloring a picture of Gideon. They will then get to add a 3D trumpet and a torch to Gideon's hands. I have cut slots in his hand so that the torch can be easily slid into his hand. The horn has two foamy dots on the back of it so that it is "3D" and puffs off the page. Hope you enjoy teaching Bible class. Blessings, Ronda

VERSES: Judges 6:1-40 MEMORY VERSE: Judges 6:12 "...The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valor." BOOK TO REMEMBER: James. Write "James" on small slips of paper and hand out to students at the end of class. PRAYER: God has chosen anyone who obeys Him. May we always be careful in the things we do and say, making sure that we are obeying God all the time. SPECIAL SONG: God Raised Up Fifteen Judges (see June - Lesson - Deborah, A Female Judge on this blog). Gideon (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog). VISUAL AID: A fleece of wool (or cotton) and a bowl of water. Wring out the water at the appropriate time. Draw a picture of an oak tree and a rock with the meat and little cakes on it. LESSON POINTS: The children of Israel enjoyed forty years of rest and peace as they obeyed God, but after that, the people again forgot God and disobeyed him. They were doing evil things and the LORD allowed the nation of Midian to rule over the Israelites for seven years. The Midianites were very cruel to the Israelites and the people ran away to the mountains and hid in dens and caves. After the Israelites had planted their crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and a few other nations came into Israel's land. They camped in their tents and let their cattle eat all of the Israelites' crops, so there was none left to grow and everything was destroyed. There were so many invaders in the land that they looked like a swarm of grasshoppers. Israel became very poor and they cried to the LORD because of the Midianites. Why did these bad things happen to the Israelites? Because they disobeyed God and did not listen to Him (Judges 6:10). This teaches us that God will always punish our disobedience. God loved His people and heard their cries and raised up another prophet to help the people. One day, an angel of the LORD went to the town of Ophrah and sat under an oak tree that belonged to a man named Joash who had a son named Gideon. Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress. Gideon was trying to hide the wheat from the Midianites in a winepress when the angel spoke to Gideon. The angel said, "The LORD is with you, mighty man of valor." Gideon said to the angel that if God was with him, why were all the bad things happening to the Israelites. "Now the LORD has forsaken us," he said. Do we know why all those bad things were happening to the children of Israel? YES! The people were not obeying God anymore. God told Gideon that he was strong and he was going to rescue Israel from the Midianites. Gideon was a little surprised! He asked God how could he save the people since he was a poor man and he was the youngest in his family. God told Gideon that He would be with him and that he COULD save the people. Gideon was not convinced and asked for a sign or something to show him that he could do this task that the LORD wanted him to do. Gideon told the angel not to go away because he wanted to give a present to him. The angel said he would stay. Gideon went in and killed a goat and started cooking it and made some little unleavened cakes. He brought the meat out in a basket and the broth was put in a small pot. The angel of God told him to take the meat and the unleavened cakes and put them on a rock, pouring out the broth. Gideon did what he was commanded to do. The angel of the LORD took the rod that was in his own hand and touched the meat and the cakes and flames jumped up and burned up the meat and the cakes. Then the angel was gone and Gideon built and altar there. That same night, God talked to Gideon again. He told him to take his father's second best young bull and pull down the altar that his father worshiped idols on, then to build an altar to the LORD on top of the rock. Gideon did what God said, but he was afraid of the men of the city and took ten servants with him and waited to do what God said at nighttime. When the men came out the next morning and saw that the idol's altar was torn down, they asked, "Who did this?" Someone finally said that Gideon did it. The men told Gideon's father to tell Gideon to come outside, and they would kill him for tearing down the idol's altar. Gideon's father told the men to let the idol take revenge on Gideon, not the men. From that day forward, Gideon's father called him by a new name, Jerubbaal. The Midianites and Amalekites gathered together and the Bible says that the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon and he blew a trumpet to tell the men to join his army. Gideon wanted God to tell him again if He really was going to help him like He said He would. Gideon took a piece of fleece of wool and put it on the floor. He said that if the fleece was wet with dew the next morning, but the ground around it was dry, then Gideon would know God was with him. He got up the next morning and there was so much dew only on the fleece that when Gideon wrung out the wool, the water filled a bowl of water! The Gideon asked God not to be mad, but if He truly was with Gideon, to do it the opposite way the next night--dew on the ground, but no water on the fleece of wool. When Gideon got up that next morning, God did just what Gideon had asked, so Gideon knew that the LORD was with him. God had chosen Gideon to deliver His people. We will study more about Gideon next time. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss what 'threshing wheat' means. A picture would be nice. Name other people that we have studied who had their names changed (Abram, Sarai, Jacob). Talk about how God makes life hard for those who do not worship Him today. (Consequences of sin, no money for food and necessities if on drugs, etc.) ACTIVITY: Fleece Materials needed: 9" x 12" yellow construction paper, 5" x 5" orange construction paper, 4" x 12" tan construction paper, 1" x 3" scrap of dark brown paper, scrap of any color paper, scrap of blue paper, two tufts of cotton batting or cotton, black crayon or marker, glue, scissors. Hand out yellow paper. This is the background. Fold yellow paper in half. Glue tan paper to the bottom of yellow paper. This is the ground. Tear dark brown paper into a mound of dirt. On the right side of yellow paper, glue dark brown paper. This is the wet ground. Cut out a small bowl. Tear out a small piece of blue paper to fit inside bowl to resemble water. In the middle of each side of yellow paper, glue cotton. Inside the yellow paper, write "#1," "water from fleece," and "bowl" on the left side of paper. See picture below. Also, draw arrows from words to correct item. Inside the yellow paper, write "#2," "dry fleece" and "wet ground" on the right side of paper. Draw a black line down the middle of paper. Turn paper over to back. Write "Was God With Gideon?" on the orange paper. (See picture above.) Fold top edge of orange paper. Glue top edge ONLY of orange paper and attach to middle of right side of yellow paper. Lift orange paper carefully and write "YES!" under orange paper. (See picture above.) Write "Judges 6" below the orange paper. Fold the paper in half again, making a good crease in the paper.

The children love the shield visual we use when teaching the story of Gideon in the bible.
The really interesting thing about Judges 7:22 is that Gideon did not start with 300 men. If this was a movie today, he probably would have started with just a couple good friends. Through charisma and successes, more and more men would be drawn to fight with him, until the climactic scene when 300 warriors fight.

After Joshua and the Israelites conquered and began to settle the promised land, God raised up men and women as needed to provide leadership for the people. These leaders were called judges. Deborah, Gideon, and Samson were three of the more well-known judges in the period of time before Israel had kings. These Bible activities are about these three historic figures that God used to help His people.

Interactive Bible lesson for Gideon and the Midianites story, Judges 7. Uses DIY ram's horns, torches and pitchers.
This post has assorted Bible Class Visuals I have made, or purchased and used for various Bible lessons. I saw this at the Teacher's Bible Class Workshop, but didn't get a picture of it. I didn't spend a lot time making it perfect, since I might not ever use it. But, it is a great idea if you teach Old Testament. Genesis 19:12-26 is Lot's wife being turned into a pillar of salt for looking back. This is a Mrs. Butterworth's container. I (my husband) sawed off the top and I rubbed sandpaper over it to make it tacky. I used 'Pottery Plaster' from Hobby Lobby and covered her all over. Once it dried, I spread my Aleene's Tacky Glue all over and poured on the salt. You can plug the hole on top and finish it with the plaster, or you can use fabric to make a headpiece to cover the hole. This Daniel in the Lion's Den was made by my husband. It is about 24x24, 12 " along the back. We sprayed painted the inside with that sand spray so it has texture. The sides and back come out of the slotted edges to store better for me. The back is about 12 inches tall. The lions were at Target Dollar Spot (Yah! Always look, you never know what you will find!) The kids LOVE this! let them touch, move the lions around, what is the point if they can't enjoy it? Here is the Daniel lesson. The preschool lesson is here. You can see more visuals from VBS here. Gideon Judges 7:8-25 Our class also used these horns for Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. I set up a BUNCH of boxes in the parking lot, we marched around the 'city' quietly 6 times, then marched and blew the horns around the 'city' 7 times and shouted loudly, and knocked all the boxes city down! They REALLY loved that Bible lesson, and kept wanting to "Let's do it again!" (Joshua 6:1-21) (I bought the horns from Oriental Trading a long time ago, the pitcher is now in the tent in the room.) Obviously, Joshua and Caleb with their huge clusters of grapes from the land of Canaan. (Numbers 13) I like to seat the kids in a giant rectangle with tables in the middle. We can push stuff out of the way, and I put the visual aids right in the center where everyone can see them. My class is too large now (that is a great problem) so I put the visuals on a table in front, behind me. They are standing on a block of wood with felt on top of it. Added note: For the Bible men in my displays, I use Ken (Barbie) dolls. I have painted their hair and painted beards on them with cheap craft paint and wrapped fabric around them for Bible clothes. If you go to garage sales, be sure to look for them there. Also, older G.I. Joes, they are the 12" ones. I have (once in a while) found generic 12" male dolls cheaper This is my boat my husband made for me. You will see it in several Paul displays. For Jonah, I found this fish at Dollar Tree (They still have them) and a smaller man. I wrapped some cloth around Jonah, and there he is being swallowed up by the Great Fish created by God. The Bible doesn't say a whale. Jonah 1:17. We know God can do anything, and He CREATED a fish just for Jonah. Next is a bulletin board that went with this Bible lesson. There is a lot of information, visuals, song, etc. on this Jonah post here with another Jonah lesson here. You can find a preschool lesson on Jonah here. My husband also made Noah's Ark for me. It is really close to scale. If you look at the top of the ark, there is a train car. That is for the kids to be able to possibly comprehend the size. One door, one window. Genesis 6:16 The trees and animals are also pretty close to scale. Added notes for this: The train car, the trees and the animals are N Scale train pieces. Hobby Lobby carries them or your local hobby store that carries train supplies. Also, look for N Scale on Ebay or Amazon. I just used green felt for the 'grass' and moss to add the extra texture. You can find the moss at Dollar Tree (or where you shop) in the floral department. Solomon. These (boy) babies are at Dollar Tree. We acted out this lesson, the boys love the swords, and now is the time to get them with the Halloween costumes at the store. Solomon is here. You can see the preschool lesson here. The Tree of Life with the flaming sword. It has FRUIT on the tree. Genesis 3:6 Moses tells us that Eve ate the fruit, it doesn't say apple. Another use for those costume swords! You can find more here. You can see more for Cain & Abel here. If you have the last edition of Ideashop from Gospel Advocate, you will see this train. The train cars have different lessons from Genesis labeled on the fronts and inside are laminated papers with a question, a picture, then at the bottom, a lift-the-flap answer. I usually used them for review. You will see this same train in the Acts bulletin boards, with more info on how I use it. (See next paragraph) Here is the same train and it is used for the book of Acts. You can find more information and how-to for the train here.

Gideon is #10 in the second quarter of lessons for the preschool class. They have so much fun with Gideon! Let’s learn about Gideon. He is found in the Old Testament book of the Bible called Judges. An Angel of God came to Gideon and said, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Valor means full of courage or brave.) The angel told Gideon that God would be with him. God has chosen Gideon to fight the Midianites to save the people! But, Gideon didn’t believe that God really wanted HIM to fight! He was just… Gideon! Why did God pick him? So, Gideon asked God that “IF you really want ME to save Israel, I will put a piece of wool on the floor. If You put dew on the wool only and there isn’t any dew on the floor, then I will know you will save Israel by my hand.” The next morning, Gideon could wring water from the wool and there wasn’t any dew on the floor. Gideon asked God again, “Don’t be angry with me, but one more test, will You put the dew on the floor and make the wool dry this time?” And, of course, when Gideon woke up, there was dew on the floor and the wool was dry. Gideon took 300 men with him to fight the Midianites. Gideon divided the 300 men into three groups of 100 men each. He gave each man a trumpet (ram’s horn), and empty pitcher with a torch inside. He told them to watch him and do like he does. When I blow the trumpet, then you blow yours and say “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.” Gideon had 100 men with him and when they got to the camp about midnight, they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers. Then the other groups of men did the same thing! They held the torches in the left hand and their trumpets in their right hand. God was with Gideon and the 300 men. Gideon and his men won the battle that night because they obeyed God. Lesson is found in Judges 6. I changed the ram's horns for this lesson. Instead of buying horns, I printed this horn template onto brown cardstock. I glued the two pieces together, but for the bowl, I just glued along the sides to leave the bowl open. Once the glue was almost dry, I inserted (whatever you want, I used straws) to force it to pop open while it finished drying. Click here to download the color and black & white. I also found this different fabric for the fleece. I cut small pieces for the students to use and take home, then had a big piece for myself. This fabric doesn't shed as much as the one I normally purchase and the kids love it! The fleece I used is Khaki Sherpa Suede Fabric found at Hobby Lobby. In most stores, look along the back wall where the blanket fleece is and you will find a couple different colors to choose from. Print this foldable in color or black and white. I print a color for the teacher's visual and black & white for the students. Fold in half on the dotted line, then in half again with the night scene inside. Students will color (or whatever you like to use) the dew for the wool scenes, then we added star stickers to the night scene. Click here to download. Click here to see these printables. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the updated visuals. The file contains updated visuals for Judges 6-7 and all are not shown. Click here to download the pictures to color. These Guided Bible Reading Learning Packs were originally created to be sold on Teachers Pay Teachers. I have several packs started, completed or somewhere in between and have been working on them for a couple of years. I started making these all-inclusive packs to use at home for Bible study or homeschooling, but they are perfect for Bible class also. Since I was using them at home, they cover a wider range of abilities. Some printables are for preschool and some for older elementary ages. And ages in between! The scripture is Judges 6-7. There are several extras included like a Gideon Mask, Stand-Ups, assorted styles of torches, ram's horn trumpets and a pitcher. I also realize that some people do not like graphics for Bible material, so a lot of the printables do not have any. Most pages are available in color and black & white when possible. Most worksheets with Biblical questions have a teacher's answer sheet included. This has a lot of pages, and you won't use everything unless you are using it for a variety of ages. Here is what is included and some ideas to use the pages: The lesson and scriptures are in the pack first, then a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. These lessons follow directly through the scripture. After or during the scripture reading, it can be used as a clarification of the text. Or, if you are using this pack for more than one study session, it can be read as a reminder of what was learned previously. This is intended for older students, but for preschool or non-writers, the questions can be read and discussed instead. Some of the worksheets are designed to help the students think deeper about Gideon and how they would act and feel during a similar situation. There is a map included. You can print in color and black & white. I picked one key verse for Gideon. There are posters in color and black & white. There are fill-in-the-blank worksheets (NKJV) and a worksheet for younger students to copy the scripture and are black & white only. All these will help with memorization. This includes a color and black & white one-page foldable book (not shown). There is also a set of Review the Facts (AKA flash cards) Cards to review the scripture.
