After a long hiatus Project66 is back! Its been my goal to create one infographic or a visual theology piece for each book of the Bible and today Joshua gets its turn.I'm a big fan of old military documentaries and learning about how and why certain battles and wars were won. I always liked it when
The tribe of Manasseh descended from the eldest son of Joseph. The men of Mansseh proved to be fierce warriors.
VERSES: Joshua 8:1-35 MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 8:1 "And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be dismayed: take all the people of war with thee and arise, go up to Ai..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: 1 Timothy. Write '1 Timothy' on small slips of paper and pass out to students at the end of class. Interesting to note that all the books that begin with "T" are all together on the list of New Testament books! PRAYER: Thank God for protecting His children and knowing what is best for them. SPECIAL SONG: The B-I-B-L-E (see February - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #2 on this blog). On Jordan's Stormy Banks (see June - Songs We Sing in Bible Class #6 on this blog). VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: The LORD had said many times to Abraham (Genesis 12:7), Moses (Deuteronomy 11:9), and Joshua (Joshua 1:11) that the land of Canaan was the Promised Land and He had given it to His people. Joshua and all the people were now in the land of milk and honey, but they had to conquer the land before it was truly theirs. After the battle of Jericho, God told Joshua to not be afraid and to not be dismayed or distressed. God had a plan. On God's command, Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of valor or mighty soldiers and sent them out at night. He told them to go behind the city of Ai, to wait there, and be ready and they did what Joshua told them to do. While the 30,000 soldiers were waiting behind the city, Joshua and 5,000 different soldiers went towards the front of the city and camped in a little valley. When the soldiers of Ai saw Joshua and his men outside the front of their city, they went out to fight them, but the Israelites pretended to be afraid of the soldiers of Ai and ran away from them, drawing them away from their city. This all went according to God's plan and there was not one man left in the city to defend it. That's when the LORD told Joshua to stretch out his spear toward Ai. The mighty men of valor went into the city at that very moment and set it on fire. When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw the smoke and didn't know where to go! Finally, they turned back to chase the Israelites into the wilderness, but the Israelites came alive, turning to fight with the men of Ai, not pretending anymore. The Israelites killed all of the men of Ai, even the king. Afterwards, Joshua built an altar to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings to Him. The altar was made of whole stones and Joshua wrote upon the stones the law of Moses. Then he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the cursings that were in the law of Moses to the people. The people listened. "Older Student" Tips: Talk about God's concern for Joshua, telling him not to be afraid (Joshua 8:1). God cared for the leader of His people. Discuss how there is much strategy in war in order to succeed. God was the leader of this war strategy and it succeeded. ACTIVITY: The Battle of Ai Materials needed: 9" x 12" yellow construction paper, 4 1/2" x 12" strip of green construction paper, 3" x 4 1/2" scrap of construction paper, glue, crayons and markers. Pass out yellow paper to students. This is the background. Pass out green paper. Tear top edge of green paper. Glue the "not torn" paper to the bottom edge of the green paper. Pass out tan paper. Tear top of tan paper. This is the city of Ai. Draw windows and a gate on the 'city.' Glue the city in the middle of the paper. Draw many soldiers in back of the city. Draw the soldiers of Ai running after the Israelite soldiers in front of the city where the gate is drawn. Draw smoke coming from the city. (This is the fun part!) Write "The Battle Of Ai" and "Joshua 8:1-35" at the top of the yellow paper.
Men from the city of Gibeon in Canaan trick Joshua into making a promise of peace with them. Are they devious or wise?

VERSES: Joshua 7:1-26 MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 7:22 "So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto his tent: and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it." BOOK TO REMEMBER: 2 Thessalonians. Write '2 Thessalonians' on small slips of paper and hand out to the students at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray that we might all stay close to God and strive to do what He says, knowing there is a great penalty for sin. Let us pray for and help each other. SPECIAL SONG: Be Patient And Kind (see April - Lesson - Joseph Meets His Brothers Who Hated Him on this blog.) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: After the walls of Jericho fell down, something terrible happened! Someone stole some things from Jericho and it hurt all of the people of Israel. God was very angry! Joshua and his men of war went from Jericho to the city of Ai. Some of the men went up and took a look at the city of Ai. The men came back and told Joshua that he should send only 2,000 or 3,000 men to fight because Ai was a small city, so Joshua did as they suggested. They did not think that this was a very big battle and did not expect any of the Israelites to die, but they were wrong. 36 men died! Joshua knew instantly that something was wrong. He tore his clothes, fell with his face to the ground in front of the ark of the covenant until evening, then he and all the leaders or elders put dust on their heads. This was a sign of great sadness. Joshua prayed to God and asked why this had happened. God told Joshua to get up off the ground because someone had sinned by stealing and putting it in their own tent. God said that He would not be with Joshua anymore unless he destroyed what was stolen. God told Joshua to tell the people that the next morning they should sanctify themselves and divide up into tribes. Remember the twelves sons of Jacob? They were to divide up in families like Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphtali,Gad, Asher, and so on. The next morning all the people divided up into families and God showed Joshua that the tribe or family of Reuben had sin in their camp. Then Reuben's families was divided up into smaller families and God showed Joshua that the family of the Zarhites had sin in their camp. Then the Zarhites' families were divided up man by man, and God showed Joshua that Zabdi had sin in his family. Zabdi brought his family to Joshua man by man and Achan was taken as the lone man who had sinned. Joshua asked Achan to tell him what he had done and not to hide it from him. Achan said that he had sinned against the LORD God. Achan said that when he saw a beautiful piece of clothing from Babylon in the things that were to be destroyed in Jericho, he stole it. He also stole silver and a wedge of gold and he hid them under his tent. Joshua sent messengers and they ran to Achan's tent where they found all of the stolen goods. They took all of the stolen things to Joshua and all of the people and laid the stolen things out before the LORD. Then they took Achan, the silver, the gold, the piece of clothing, and everything Achan had and Joshua said, "Why have you troubled Israel this day? The LORD shall trouble you this day!" Achan and his family died that day all because of Achan's greed and disobedience. We should always obey God. We have learned that a lot in our Bible class, haven't we? When people disobey God, bad things happen to them, but when people obey God, God is always with them. We should always want God on our side and we should always be on His! "Older Student" Tips: Discuss greed, what it is, and what it can do to people. Everyone must have been very angry at Achan because his greed killed 36 soldiers. God has always had strict laws and when people disobeyed His laws, there have always been grave consequences. We may fool people, but we can't fool God! God knows our sins and our hearts. ACTIVITY: Achan's Tent and What Was Under It Materials needed: 9" x 12" piece of any color construction paper, 5" x 7" triangle of fabric in a 'tent' color (I used an old dish cloth), foil, shiny gold paper (I used a snip of a gold gift bag), a tiny piece of brightly colored material or paper (I used old gift wrapping paper), a 1" x 2" piece of 'rug' fabric (I used a small piece of a cloth I use to dust the furniture--nothing is safe!), a 1/4" x 2" scrap of brown paper, 1 1/2" scrap of any color paper, scissors, glue, crayons or markers. Hand out 9" x 12" construction paper. This is the foundation. Hand out out triangular fabric. This is the tent. Cut up the middle of the fabric to make a tent door. Set aside. In the middle of the tent's door, glue the foil down first. On top of the foil, but a little to the side so you can still see the foil, glue the wedge of gold. On top of the gold, but a little to the side so you can still see the gold, glue a piece of brightly colored material or paper. Glue one edge of 'rug material' slightly to the side of the three stolen goods, so that when the rug it lifted up, the student can see the three items. Glue outside edge ONLY of tent material. Place in the middle bottom of the foundation. Glue brown scrap by tent (see picture) for a post. Write "Achan's tent" on scrap of any color paper. Glue "Achan's tent" sign to top of post. Write "Achan's Sin" and "Joshua 7" at the top of the foundation. Make sure the student can open the tent door, then the 'rug' to see the stolen items.

This is part 2 of Joshua and covers the Battle of Jericho. Cathy uses a flip chart for this lesson, so that is the first part of this post. You can click here to download the flip chart pages. Once they are printed and laminated if you like, then you can bind these across the top to create the flip chart. This is the same set of visuals, but they are half the page. Cathy uses a lot of magnetic board visuals and the first lesson in this series is magnetic board visuals, so I added these also. To use them, cut the pieces out after printing, laminate them and add thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first (Joshua for this lesson), then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. They can also be used as visuals alone, a smaller flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. Click here to download the visuals. The visuals above are numbered to coordinate with this lesson. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the visuals. The file includes visuals for Joshua 1-6: Rahab, The Jordan Crossing and The Battle of Jericho. There are 35 visuals, so all are not shown. (These are not included in the application pack.) This lesson might be too intense for the young child, but very important nevertheless, for here we learn of a man named Korah who wanted to minister where God had not called him. We are warned of…
Joshua chooses commanders (Joshua 3:1-6) يشوع يختار قواد (يشوع 3: 1-6)
VERSES: Numbers 16:1-50 MEMORY VERSE: Numbers 16:48 "And he stood between the living and the dead: and the plague stayed." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Romans. Write "Romans" on slips of paper and hand them out at the end of the class. PRAYER: Let all of us remember that God loves pure, dedicated, obedient hearts and try our best to have that kind of heart. SPECIAL SONG: Be Careful Little Eyes (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog) VISUAL AID: "Korah's Rebellion" (same as Activity below) LESSON POINTS: Special Note: This lesson is a little longer than normal, so might start right on time today! It is never good to go against God. We know this is true because we have been studying for a long time now about what happens to people who do not love the LORD enough to obey Him. For some reason, there are some people who do not think of the consequences of their actions and rebel against God. That's what a man named Korah and his followers did. They forgot that God is all powerful and expects His children to obey Him, much like parents expect their children to obey them. There were four men, Korah, who was a Levite, and Dathan, Abiram, and On, who were from Reuben's family. These four men stood up before Moses with 250 of their friends who were in the congregation and were Israelite leaders, but they did not respect Moses and Aaron and the authority that God had given them. They gathered together in one place and told Moses and Aaron to their faces, "Why do you exalt yourselves above the congregation of the LORD when everyone here is holy, every single one of the people is holy?" When Moses heard what this group had to say, he fell on his face, then he said to Korah and to all the group, "Tomorrow the LORD will make known who is His and who is holy and who is allowed to come close to Him. Korah and all those that are in agreement with him, this is what you should do tomorrow: Take your censors, put fire and incense in them in the presence of the LORD. He will choose who is holy. You have exalted yourselves too much, you sons of Levi! Isn't it enough that you are Levites and have special privileges and jobs? He has allowed you, as Levites, to come closer to Him than others are allowed and now you seek the priesthood as well? What has Aaron done to you that you can complain against him?" Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, but they said that they would not come. They refused to obey the rules. This is called 'rebellion.' They complained to Moses and asked him why he was going to kill them in the wilderness and then make himself a prince over the people. Was this right? Was it Moses who didn't want to go into the Promised Land and was it Moses who was going to kill them in the wilderness? NO! The PEOPLE would not go and GOD gave them consequences for their sin! Normally, Moses was a meek and patient man, but this made Moses very angry and Moses suggested to God that He not accept any of their offerings. He said that he had not taken even a donkey from them and he had never wronged even one of them. So, Moses told Korah that he and all his company, and even Aaron, should appear before the LORD the next day. Each man was to take his censor, filled with fire and incense and stand of the door of the tabernacle. The next day, they did as they were told and the glory of the LORD appeared to the congregation. God told Moses and Aaron to separate themselves from the congregation because He was going to destroy all of the people in a moment! Moses and Aaron both fell on their faces and asked God if He would destroy them because a few had sinned. So the LORD told Moses to tell everyone to step away from Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side and to stay away from the tents of those wicked men or they, too, would be consumed for those men's sins. So, everyone stepped far away from the men and their tents, and all that they owned. The men stood outside their tents with their families. Moses then said, "This is the way that you will all know that God has sent me to do these things and I have not done anything by myself. If these men here die a natural death and nothing happens to them right now, you will all know that the LORD has not sent me. But, if the earth opens up and swallows them up and everything that belongs to them, and they go down into a pit alive, then you will know these men have made the LORD God angry." Guess what? It happened just like Moses said it would! The ground underneath only those men's feet and tents opened up and everything that they owned including them and their families went deep inside the ground and then the ground closed up again and they all died. Everyone who was standing around them, all of those 250 friends, started to run away because they were afraid that they, too, would be swallowed up, but a fire from the LORD came out and consumed every one of those 250 men offering incense. God wanted pure, dedicated, and obedient hearts, not rebellious hearts that disobeyed Him. He wanted the people to remember this lesson about Korah and the rebellion. God told Moses to tell Eleazar, Aaron's son, to go get the 250 censors from the fire and scatter all the ashes around because it was holy, then to take the brass censors and hammer them down to make a broad plate for a covering for the altar. This was to be a memorial to the Israelites that no one who was not from Aaron's family was to offer incense before the LORD. Now you would think that was the end of the story, but it wasn't. The very next morning, do you know what the Israelites did? They complained about Moses and Aaron, saying that they had killed the people of the LORD!! They did not learn that it was the one who sinned that caused his own death! If Korah and his friends had been obeying God, they would not have died! So God heard the people complaining and He told Moses to get away from the people that He was going to kill all of them right then. Moses and Aaron fell on their faces and Moses told Aaron to hurry and take a censer, put fire and incense in it, and make atonement for the people because God's anger had already gone out to the people and a plague had begun. Aaron did as Moses said and the Bible says that as Aaron ran out in the middle of the people, he stood between the living and the dead and the plague was stopped, so not everyone died. 14,700 people besides Korah and his friends died that day. All because of Korah. Very sad. We always need to obey God. God wants what is best for us because He loves us very much, but He wants us to obey Him always. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss the fact that all Levites were not all priests, but all priests were Levites. From no other tribe or family did God allow to be priests. (Leviticus 6) ACTIVITY: "Korah's Rebellion" *Please Note: This is not a difficult project, but it may take a little extra time for small children. The brown papers can be made in advance by the Bible teacher to assure there is enough time to finish. (You can do this!! The kids will remember this story for a long time with this project.) Materials needed: 12" x 18" brown construction paper, three 2" x 4" different colored scraps of paper, three 5" x 1" strips of white paper, tape, scissors, crayons, marker. Hand out brown paper to students. Fold paper in half, length-side. Fold paper in half again, so there are four panels when unfolded. Re-fold Panel One and Panel 4, so they both meet in the middle. This creates the "pit." Crease all folds well. Unfold paper. Place on table, landscape-style. Between first and second panels and third and fourth panels, cut 1 1/2" slits on top and bottom. (Total four slits.) (see picture below #8). Fold inward point of slit to inside middle half of entire paper. Hold up brown paper, so that inward triangles met. Tape like this on each side. (see below.) Fold any-color strips of paper in half, and in half again. This is a tent. Unfold small strips of paper, fold like a 'tent' and tape. Make three tents.. On white paper, write "Korah", draw his family; leave an extra inch of blank, white paper on one side to fold so the triangle will stand up. Tape to secure. On white paper, write "Abiram", draw his family; leave an extra inch of blank, white paper on one side to fold so the triangle will stand up. Tape to secure. On white paper, write "Dathan", draw his family; leave an extra inch of blank, white paper on one side to fold so the triangle will stand up. Tape to secure. Write "Korah's Rebellion" and "Numbers 16" on the edge of the brown paper. Place tents and families on top of flat 'ground.' Have students practice holding the pit with the three tents and three families on the top of the "ground." Open up the "earth" and let the families and tents fall in! This is a great visual aid for this lesson!
