These crisp and golden brown Onion & Spinach Pakoras are a delicious savoury start to any Indian-themed dinner party. They look fabulous and taste even better. A very popular Indian appetizer, especially in the North, Pakoras are often bought from street vendors who serve them steaming hot wrapped in a newpaper cone. Crisp and golden brown on the outside with a soft fragrant interior of finely chopped spinach, onions, fresh grated ginger, green chillies and an intoxicating combination of aromatic spices, the pakoras are blended together in a fine chickpea flour batter and flash fried at the last minute for an easy and outrageously delicious appetizer fit for a Maharajah. Onion & Spinach Pakoras Makes 12-16 pakoras 1 cup fresh spinach 1 cup chickpea flour 1 medium size onion, finely chopped 1-inch ginger, finely grated 1 green chili, seeded and finely chopped 1 tsp ground fennel seed 1/4 tsp red chili powder 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp cumin a pinch of asafoetida 2 tbsp sesame seeds 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup ice cold water, and more if necessary salt to taste oil for deep frying Remove the stems from the spinach. Wash, dry and finely chop. Add all the onion, ginger, green chili and all of the spices to the flour and mix well. Add 1/2 cup of ice cold water to make a fluffy smooth batter. Sprinkle the baking powder over this paste and mix lightly. Set aside for 15- 20 minutes. Heat oil for deep frying, until a drop of pakora mixture instantly floats to the top. Don’t let the oil smoke. Drop teaspoon-sized amounts of pakora mix into the oil until the surface is covered. Using a teaspoon gives a dumpling shape to the pakora, whereas dropping the dough from your fingers gives a more delicate, interesting shape. Stir and turn the pakora until they are lightly golden brown on all sides, about 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Are your students struggling with theme? No worries - here are 3 games/centers specifically designed to give students the theme practice they need without boring them with long passages.
Theme is such an important concept when teaching reading. Students are asked to determine the theme of a text over and over again. However, many students struggle with how to identify the theme. That's why I'm sharing some of my favorite ways to teach theme. You'll find theme lesson ideas, theme activities, and theme passage suggestions to help your students finally figure out how to find theme! Sometimes when thinking about theme it is easiest to think about what it is not. Theme is NOT the subject of the text. The subject would be a single word like "childhood" or "friendship." It is NOT a summary. A summary would be several sentences describing the text. Instead, it is the underlying idea of a text. It is what the writer wishes to convey about the subject. Therefore, it is usually written in a phrase or clause. When teaching theme, I find that it's best to introduce the critical components of theme through notes and a class discussion. My favorite kind of notes are theme doodle notes, of course. Since doodles are more engaging, they're a great way to get students focused as you begin teaching about theme. Once students have a general understanding of theme, you might want to have a discussion with students. During the discussion ask students to think of texts that have a theme like "Be careful what you wish for" or "Never give up on your dreams." Then, have students discuss the theme of fairytales or fables like "Beauty and Beast" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." The notes and discussion will drive home the idea that the theme is not a single word subject, nor is it a multi-sentence summary. Students will realize that the theme is a truth about life revealed in a phrase or clause. A work's theme can apply to multiple texts. When you teach about theme you'll want to help students realize that themes need to be general enough to apply to many different texts. Take the theme "Be careful what you wish for." That theme can apply to "The Little Mermaid," "Jack and the Beanstalk," and even "Macbeth." It's important for students to realize that themes are universal. You'll also want to expose students to different genres of writing so that students understand that themes are evident in all writing including fiction, nonfiction, prose, and poetry. I've compiled different genres in this theme unit. Since poems are short and compressed, I love using poems to help students develop an understanding of theme. Take a poem like, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" by Maya Angelou. In Angelou's poem, the speaker is a child. Angelou's message and the poem's theme is to "be brave when faced with your fears." You might share poems like this or some of my other favorites to help students read several texts and practice determining universal themes. The theme is the message that the writer wishes to reveal about its subject. It's what the reader is supposed to learn about life after reading the text. Therefore, it is usually not directly stated in the work. Instead, students will need to think about the plot, conflict, characters, and setting and then make an inference or educated guess. When students consider all the elements of the text, they'll need to infer the theme. One way to help students understand that the story is built around the theme is to have them develop their own stories with a theme in mind. At first, you can have students do this by providing them with themes that they will need to portray in a comic strip or skit. For instance, you might have students doodle a comic for the theme "Two heads are better than one." Or, you could have students work in small groups to come up with a skit that has the theme "Friends always show up when you need them." By writing their own texts, students will begin to see how the theme is infused throughout the work. As students determine the theme of a passage, they'll need to consider a text's plot, characters, conflict, and tone. In other words, they need to think about the entire writing piece and reflect on its message about life. That can be challenging for students. That's why I like to give students many opportunities to practice finding the theme. Task cards and mini-passages work especially great for this. I've taken the idea of theme task cards even further with Learning Take Out activities. Students read fiction and nonfiction passages that they grab from take out containers. The passages are the perfect way for students to develop the ability to identify a text's theme. ------------------------------------------------- As you can tell, there are many ways to teach theme. I think the more chances we can give students to develop their reading skills, the better! Creamy butternut squash pasta made with roasted butternut squash, garlic and parmesan. The thick and creamy sauce (that's pretty hard not to eat straight from the bowl) is tossed with penne pasta for a quick and incredibly delicious dinner the whole family will enjoy!
This was a fun flip! I teamed up with a colleague and that made it even better. Mrs. B and I came in on Sunday and got this done to my room in just a few hours. Yes it does take time to do something like this and yes it almost guarantees you will get a surprise visit from the fire Marshall, but it is worth it when you see the kids amazement and engagement in the classroom. I used phosphate font to type out letters and then cut out to make sign. This is an old box I found to make into a jeep-it was a bit difficult so next year I will be turning my writing table into a Jeep. I needed my guided reading supplies so I covered my books and filing cabinet with volcano but left hole for my tools for guided reading and math. We happened to have a box of bones in our kinder closet so it was perfect to add a few- random I know!! I also got the camo burlap on clearance from Walmart years ago and thought I may need it someday. The only thing I had to buy for this transformation but didn't really have to was a roll of black tablecloth from Hobby Lobby and some streamers. Another colleague who ended up jumping on the Jurassic Park theme also added a waterfall with Christmas lights and blue butcher paper. The morning the students came and saw Jurassic Park for the first time, I had them wait outside so they could all enter together. I played the theme song on my promethean board. Students put thing away and I had them come to the carpet. I told them they were hired by Jurassic Park. We talked about how dinosaurs have been extinct but because of science we have been able to bring dinosaurs back from extinction. I told them we must learn everything we can about dinosaurs before the dinosaurs come and the visitors come to the park. During the next few days we did all kinds of dinosaur activities such as books, poems, digging up dinosaur bones, writing, making predictions about what different bones were, and various other activities. On the final day of Jurassic Park, I had arranged for parent volunteers to come in and run some stations I had planned. I even had my formal observation this day. I told my principals I have no guarantees of what she will see but come on in and join the crazy. I am blessed to have an educational assistant who is wonderful with the students, here we are here ready for this fun and dangerous day. I had here take the students to the bathrooms and read the history of Jurassic Park. (I found this book recently on a trip to Albuquerque) While she was out with them I put out each mission and explain to the volunteers what they would be doing at each station. When students returned, I told them "the dinosaurs have gone crazy and are very dangerous. We must get off this Jurassic Park island. To do this, we must complete 6 missions and we must hurry before they return." I gave each students a colored Jurassic Park ID badge. I grouped them with high/med/low students in them, however the volunteers were there to make sure not just one student was doing all the work. Students rotated through each station and they knew it was time to move when the heard the alarm. This is the sound I played to clean up and rotate: Mission 1: Sick Triceratops Students had to put the Triceratops back together by adding one more and one less. Mission 2: Stolen Egg Students must find the canister that holds the stolen dinosaur egg. They are given clues to put the canisters in order and must measure and weigh the canisters to determine which is holding the dinosaur egg. Mission 3: Jeep Breakdown Students must connect the circuits to get the Jeep running again. To do this they had to understand basic features of sentences and sentence structure. Mission 4: Capture the Dinosaur The students had to track a dinosaur. Students had to sequence events to capture the dinosaur. Mission 5: T-Rex Attack Students must build a boat to escape the island. This was a fun STEM exploratory activity. Mission 6: Erupting Volcano Students must rush to get all the dinosaurs back in their cages before the volcano erupts. Students also had field guides that were exit tickets for each station and had extra practice pages if they finished before the alarm went off. These missions took about 2 hours and the students were fully engaged the whole 2 hours. It was amazing and the students still are talking about it 2 weeks later. I am happy to have my room back to normal but I am already planning another transformation before the year ends. Transformations take more time and energy so I do not do them often but they bring excitement to your teaching and to your students. The missions I talked about in this post are available for purchase in my TPT store. You can find it here.

This posting is for cloud - other pieces can be found on our main page. These are sturdy hand-painted two-layer wooden pieces. This would look great in any Mario Bros or gaming-themed room, office, game room, classroom, etc. These are much more durable that vinyl, and look better too! There is no hanging mechanism, but we suggest using command strips for easy removal as needed. These are hand created and hand painted - you may see some wood grain and wood grain imperfections.
