Post World War II, Berlin Airlift An allied Dakota plane brings aid to starving Berliners
This detailed stations activity on the Potsdam Conference, the Nuremberg Trials, the Berlin Airlift (and more), students focus on the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences and, after investigation, students decide if the Potsdam Conference was a failure or a success. Students begin with an introductory background reading assignment with four overarching questions on the Yalta Conference, the changing political landscape before the Potsdam Conference that ended WWII, and the agreements between Truman, Attlee (Churchill), and Stalin that took place there. Then, students analyze FIVE events in the immediate aftermath of World War II that gave way to the Cold War to determine if the Potsdam Conference failed or succeeded in its goals for postwar Europe. Students learn about the merging of the American, British, and French zones of Berlin into the "Trizone," the establishment of the Deutsch Mark, and the Berlin Blockade and subsequent Berlin Airlift. Next, students learn about the Nuremberg Trials that persecuted Nazi war criminals for their role in the war. Third, students examine the creation of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan to fight communism and rebuild Western Europe. Fourth, students learn about the emergence of the Arms Race that began at the Potsdam Conference with the news of the successful atomic bomb test. Finally, students investigate the supposed "free and fair elections" in Poland, Bulgaria, and Hungary in the immediate aftermath of World War II. This lesson is an outstanding way to teach the failed agreements that ended World War II, or as a way to begin the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. A teacher key and full 1:1 Google version are included!
