It’s no secret I like lesser known, off-the-beaten-path places in Italy. It’s in these areas that a very authentic experience can be had. The Le Marche region would certainly make the cut. The area shares a border to the west with Umbria and to the east, you’ll find a lovely coastline along the Adriatic sea. Ascoli Piceno is the southernmost province in Le Marche. Why visit Ascoli Piceno? Other than the food and wine (which of course always tops my list of reasons to visit a place) Ascoli Piceno has medieval towns Roman ruins many historic churches charm and authenticity a perfect combination of green mountains, little towns, sandy beaches and rocky coastline two natural parks, Sibillini National Park and Gran Sasso-Laga National Park local craft artisans; goldsmiths, leather, terracotta, majolica, pillow lace hardly any tourists. And it’s inexpensive compared to other popular areas of Italy convenient to nearby Umbria and Rome – about 2 hours from each. Abruzzo is even closer. Things to do The town of Ascoli Piceno itself has both a new town and an old town. In the old town, you’ll see plenty of travertine marble, ancient facades, ruins and tiny mazes of streets. It once held about 200 towers, but today only about 50 are visible... Click to read more Via Mariano Pallottini

Anthony was born in Amandola in the Marche Region and, attracted by the reputation of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, he entered the Augustinian Order and distinguished himself for his humility, spirit of obedience, and mortification, as well as his apostolic zeal. Around the year 1385 he was assigned to the monastery at Tolentino where he served as sacristan in the church of his beloved Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. In 1397 he went to southern Italy, possibly to undertake the preaching ministry. In 1400 he returned to Amandola where, through his initiative, the new Augustinian monastery with its adjoining church dedicated to Saint Augustine was constructed. After his death the church was renamed in Anthony's memory. Anthony has been venerated ever since his death at Amandola on 25 January 1450. It is recorded in the municipal acts of the city that, as early as 1460, the anniversary of his death was observed as a feast and not a work day. His incorrupt body is exposed for public veneration by the faithful in the church of Saint Augustine in Amandola. www.beatoantonio.it Via Mariano Pallottini

Well I have now been in Macerata, Italy for over two weeks and I am FINALLY updating my blog. I know everyone has been dying to see pictures of all I have been seeing so wait no longer! This is going to take me three posts to get everything on here so bare with me. Lets start out with random pictures taken throughout Macerata. This is a view from above of one of the many Piazzas throughout the old walled city. This was originally built to be a sports stadium (post gladiators) but is now an outdoor theater. I so wish I was going to be here during the summer, this place is host to the second best outdoor opera in all of Italy. Your basic Medieval city roof tiles. These next two pictures were taken from the top of the clock tower. Unfortunately, I was too overcome by the beauty that stupid me forgot to take my camera off indoor settings so the pictures aren't the best at all. Oops! The bell rang while we were up there. Have you ever had a giant bell ring about a foot behind your head? Cuz I'll tell ya, not so easy on the ears. Oh yeah, I know you're jealous.
