My daughter loves when we have storytime at our house. Every day we can easy read for 15-30 minutes. Visits to our local library is always exciting because of the idea of finding new books to enjoy. There has been one book that is not new to most, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Although I've heard great reviews about this book I never made the decision to borrow it. I have found another fun way to find books and that is at yard sales! When I see a bin of books I'm all over it! Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was one I recently found and grabbed it for .25 cents!! After the first read my daughter was hooked! She smiled and laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the story. She loves how it rains and snows food! Each night before bed my daughter chooses a book which is alot more fun and easier now that we have our rain gutter book shelf. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a favorite for at least a week straight! To help my daughter with reading comprehension I made up this activity, here's what I used and how we played: Giant Post it Notes (these are awesome!) Permanent Marker Brown paper bags Prizes for bag This was such an easy set up. I had a list of questions I asked my daughter about the story and wrote 2 choices to each question onto the Post It Notes. After I read the question my daughter had to choose which was the correct answer by jumping on it. At the end of each path I taped a brown paper bag, if she chose the right path she would receive some goodies I hid in the bag. If she chose the wrong path the bag would be empty. She chose the correct answers so she got the prizes on the first try - had she not we would have just kept playing until she got it right! This was a really fun activity that helped my daughter with her reading comprehension and got her moving at the same time.....and a little prize at the end never hurts!!

Dictionary Skills? What? You might think that students working in dictionaries is an obsolete idea. With the advancement of technology, students can find information, check spelling, grammar, sentence structure, even get help writing complete papers. But learning how to use a dictionary will help students later on when they are researching or trying to find information. Once they discover how a dictionary is laid out, they will be able to gather information from other resources. Our youngest students should learn that *words in a dictionary are organized alphabetically. *Each word is called an entry. *You can find correct spelling, pronunciation, the parts of speech, and definition. *Guide words on the top of dictionary pages give clues about what words are included on each page. This ultra mini unit introduces kids to the wonderful word world of dictionaries. Once hooked, kids will love being Dictionary Detectives! So after organizing our thinking about dictionaries, I let the kids pick a word from the given list. In pairs they set off to be Dictionary Detectives. They had to look up the word, write the definition, and then write a sentence on the recording page. Then they got to share their detective work by making a little paint chip pumpkin! They turned out great!!! A wonderful hand to heart action!!! But what happened next is what made me say "What??" I keep our little basket of dictionaries back by our classroom library. During DEAR time kids can pick any book from our library to read. For the past week, more kids pick a dictionary to read! I know, I know...they aren't able to practice fluency, story structure, fiction, nonfiction characteristics, etc. But wow!! They are having a blast looking up words!!! I see them using their detective skills along with the alphabet layout, and the guide words! When they finally spy the word they are looking for...TAH DAH!!! You can hear the joy in their voices, little screams, and wiggles! They can't wait to share!!! I love it so much! I hope their excitement for discovering wonderful words never falters!! If you need a quick mini unit to help you get started on this detective journey, CLICK HERE!!! :) I hope your kids love being Dictionary Detectives as much as mine have! Let me know how it goes! Till then, have a wonder-filled week!! Love to all! Joyfully! Nancy [email protected]

I created a couple of sheets at the beginning of the year to teach inferencing. I googled "Inference Photographs" and downloaded many images to my computer. There are also many photos on Pinterest. I ordered them as 4x6 prints to save on ink. The children worked in small groups to make observations, list schema(background knowledge) and then list inferences. They enjoyed picking out the photos. Listening and following verbal or oral directions is an important skill that many students lack. You may relate to Charlie Brown's teacher after going over step-by-step directions. Students often hear the sound the teacher's voice is making, but fail to tune into the meaning of the words. When students aren't actively listening, they miss important information that can impact their academic AND behavior in the classroom. One way you can help your students practice active listening so they will follow directions is with a fun activity called Listen and Draw. Listen and Draw is a great activity to do with your class at the beginning of the year when you are teaching class procedures. Include these with your plans after breaks as a warmup plus a good reminder about practicing listening and following directions. See my favorite syllable activities for preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten students in this post. Learning to count syllables is a vital skill and will help students with phonological awareness skills. Phonological awareness is an umbrella term that includes the four skills: word awareness, syllable awareness, rhyming awareness, first sound awareness, and phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating the individual sounds in words). Syllable games are a fun way for students to develop a strong phonological awareness by chunking syllables (parts in words). Students will practice syllable segmenting and counting syllables.

Alice loved her grandfather and wanted to do the things that he had done. She told him that she too would live in faraway lands and live by the sea. Her grandfather told her that those were great things to do but she must also do something to make the world a more beautiful place. As Alice got older she became Miss Rumphius and she spent her life traveling and living by the sea and wondering what she could do to make the world a more beautiful place. Miss Rumphius hurt her back on one of her trips, so as she was laying in bed tending to her injured back she could see her lupines growing outside her bedroom window. Seeing these flowers made her so happy. After Miss Rumphius’s back got better she took a long walk through the woods and discovered lupine flowers growing where they shouldn’t be growing. That’s when she decided she was going to plant lupines all over to make the world a more beautiful place. This made Miss Rumphius very happy. This book has so many great opportunities for teaching reading skills and strategies. Use the information below to help you quickly and easily create a meaningful lesson. Because her back was hurting her again. Why were there lupine flowers on the other side of the hill? Because the wind and birds carried the seeds there. Hello all! Isn't the beginning of the school year just crazy?! Has it always been this crazy?! This post is going to be a little long, because I feel like I have so much to catch up on! And I am using way too many exclamation points!!! Anyway..... Common Core really emphasizes digging deeper into the text. It's very hard to motivate students to do just that. It's a lot of work! This year, I decided to really push the fact that they have to be reading detectives. I thought this little book was great for teaching what detectives do in a fun and relatable way for them. We brainstormed what detectives do after reading the story. I knew they had to have something that made them feel like a detective. Last year, I made little badges for the different skills, but I found these super cute hat templates online for free! I just cut out the hat image and attached it to a sentence strip. You can find them {HERE}. Such a cute little resource and the kids LOVED them! Our comprehension skill this week was author's purpose. I am going to try to post the resources I use each week for reading on the blog. One resource I used was my own. I made several different author's purpose graphic organizer templates. One was a flap book. We used it with our anchor text for the week and talked about looking for text evidence to back up the author's purpose. They actually were all about it. I think the hats won them over! Here are some cute songs we used to learn about author's purpose. These are some of the resources I use to practice author's purpose. We also worked on the 4 types of sentences. These are some cute videos to use. And some more pics from our week. By the way, I am having trouble fitting everything from Journeys into one week. Are any of you? One teacher at our school is teaching the lesson for 6 days and then testing on the 7th. I am thinking about going to this, too. This past week was a 4 day week for our students and so is next week, so I am stretching out this week's lesson over both weeks. We also had our Back to School night this past week. We wrote our five whole brain rules using Angie's template from her David Learns the School Rules pack. I just constructed these pencils in a hurry from scrapbook paper. Her David craftivity is super cute! We made some other stuff, too, but of course I forgot to take a picture of it! Rayann saw this idea on Pinterest. So, I cut us out some letters with my Silhouette. I thought it turned out pretty cute! We have been working hard on vocabulary. Here is one making flash cards to help him remember his words. I have them draw a picture to help them learn and retain the meanings. I got these little accordion files in the Target Dollar Spot. They keep their vocabulary cards, letter tiles, math facts, incentive coupons, and any other flash cards in this. They can just pull it out when they have downtime and study. I think that's it! Thanks for sticking around for my rambling! Lol! Have a great long weekend!!!
