This batik was made in a process called screen or silk printing, which was done manually by hand. 🌿Approximate Measurement: 39 x 90 inches. It is not sewn into tubular sarong, instead in the form of fabric. It usually is preferable for most people because of its versatility. It can be transformed into dresses, skirts, wrap, sarong without sewing. And can also be used for table cloth, blanket/throw, bedding, upholstery and sewn into anything your heart desire. Edges of fabric are not hemmed. 🌿 This batik feature "Sawat Gurdo" or the wings of the mythical Garuda bird, which symbolizes the source of life and leadership and protection. Because of its handcrafted nature, this batik does have minor imperfection, please refer to the last two photos. They are hardly noticeable because of the intricacy of the motif, but they are there. Price reflects discount due to this imperfections. 🌿Fabric is 100% cotton. Machine washable separately, tumble dry at lowest setting. Batik screen printing is an innovative way of creating a more affordable batik while retaining the human hand work elements in the equation, thus retaining some of its traditional elements of this ancient art. Batik, as seen from a traditional lens, is a wax-resist dyeing craft with its roots in Indonesia, and in October of 2009 it was lauded as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The traditional batik making process started with a pencil trace under the assistance of natural light to put the design/motif onto the fabric, then wax was fed into a canting to trace the motif, next, a repeated process of dyeing and drying, and finished with a reveal of the final motif when the wax is removed with boiling water. The whole process of making a batik fabric can take somewhere between 1 months to several years to complete. Because of the lengthy process of batik making, sustainability and affordability have always been an issue. To solve this problems, some batik artisans invented batik screen printing. The process of batik screen printing started with the artisans building an organza screen by hand, soak it in an special photosensitive emulsion that will harden when exposed to very bright light. They will put their printed design/motif on top of the emulsion covered organza screen, and then bring it into the dark room where a focused light will make the emulsion on the screen that is not covered by the design hardened, effectively transferring the design onto the screen, creating a stencil of the design. This whole process likened to developing negative film in photography. This screen stencil will then put into a frame, and coupled with squeegee will be used to push either ink or wax through the stencil and onto the fabric. At the end, in the process of batik screen printing, the integrity of human elements are still kept in the process. Every organza screen is built from scratch, the motif then moves from print to screen through an emulsion process done manually in the dark room.
