Georg Baselitz schuf 1965/66 die monumentale Serie der »Helden« und »Neuen Typen«, die er in wilder Farbigkeit und aggressiv-trotzigem Stil präsentierte. Mit der Hinwendung zur Tradition der figürlichen Malerei stand er in eklatantem Kontrast zu den vorherrschenden abstrakt-expressionistischen Tendenzen der 1960er-Jahre und beschritt einen singulären Weg.In seiner skeptischen Grundhaltung zum Nachkriegsdeutschland betont Baselitz (* 1938) in seinen Werken die ambivalenten Aspekte seiner Gegenwart. Entsprechend widersprüchlich wirken seine »Helden« im zerschlissenen Kampfanzug, denen ihr Scheitern ebenso eingeschrieben ist wie ihre Resignation. Der Kontrast zur bundesrepublikanischen Erfolgsgeschichte des Wirtschaftswunders konnte schärfer kaum sein, doch es ging um mehr: Mit dieser Werkgruppe reflektierte der Maler seine eigene Position im Verhältnis zu dieser Gesellschaft. Es war die Selbstbehauptung und Identitätsbestimmung des Künstlers, die auf dem Spiel stand und die Baselitz mit Wucht formulierte.
