How was your week? We had a crazy week of assessments in Room 206 - being the end of the marking period and all! But we made it! I managed to throw a little fun in somehow. Here's a sneak peek - #growthmindset is a hot topic in the education world currently and Class Dojo has jumped on board by creating cute, engaging videos that tell kids "the brain is a muscle that needs to be worked out." If you haven't shown these videos yet - put them in your plans for next week!! They've released two videos so far (just a couple minutes long for each) and they have three more planned! We typically do a GoNoodle brain break each day before writing time, but we substituted with the videos twice this week instead! Just go to your class dojo page and click on the 'big ideas' tab. The videos will pop right up. Since it's the end of the 2nd marking period for us this week - new semester means new partners! If you use partners in your classroom a lot (two heads are better than one) than you need to download these phone partner templates from Young Teacher Love. For years, I used a strategy similar to this one but with clocks - when I saw Kristine's phone templates a few years ago I HAD to replace our clocks with her phones - I mean it's the 21st century, right? Better get with the times! The concept is easy - each student gets a phone template and walks around the classroom searching for ten partners. I laminate the phones when they're completed and we tape them to our desks. Whenever the students need to check over their work with a partner, discuss ideas or work together, etc., I spin a spinner and they find that number partner quickly. Takes all of about 10 seconds to determine partners this way. And we use partners several times daily so this is a HUGE timesaver in room 206! End of the marking period also means LOTS of assessing! To review for our math summative assessment this week we played one of my favorite review games - Math Baseball. This idea was passed on to me from a former colleague and it's never gotten old! Here's a quick run-down of how to play - separate the class into two teams. Number each student 1-15 in team one, and 1-15 in team two. (numbers will vary depending on your number of students) Draw two baseball diamonds on the board - or create reusable posters like I have. Bring batter number ones up to the board, all of the remaining students are outfielders. Give the students a review question to solve. The batters solve it on the board but keep their work covered up. The outfielders solve it at their desks. Call a random outfielder number, check each outfielder's work. If correct, the team moves a base. Check the batter's work. If correct, the team moves a base. Play until all review questions are complete. The team with the most runs is the winner!! What I love most about this game is that ALL students are engaged the entire game! We took a BIG writing test this week too over opinion essays. What I've noticed over the past few years of teaching opinion writing is that my students are good at forming an opinion and good at backing it up with evidence and good with arguing their point (what kid isn't???), but they struggle with putting all that great thinking into the correct opinion essay structure. So we created this anchor chart to help with remembering the format for an opinion essay! I think it really helped! Lastly, while we tested our little behinds off this week, we also celebrated the end of the marking period with a PBiS school wide movie. Our gym was transformed into the Falcon Cinema for a showing of the movie 'Inside Out.' The kids brought in blankets and pillows and we served cookies and hot chocolate. A good time was had by all. Our PBiS team rocks!!!! Happy weekend teacher friends! I'm off to grade all of those assessments we took this week! Yikes!!!!

Are you looking for a math review game that will engage ALL of your students? Try math baseball! I like to use this game for math because I can come up with countless questions on the same topic. Below I will show you my rules for the game but they can be adapted based on how you would like to play! Multiply Decimals Baseball Review How to play Preparation: 1. You will need to collect many questions for each of the 3 levels of questions. When I collect my questions, I usually have at least 20 questions per level. Check out my Multiplying Decimal Review if you don't have time to come up with your own questions. 2. You will designate the bases around the classroom. 3. You will split the class into teams and create a batting order (if desired). 4. Have paper or whiteboards for the students to work out the questions. 5. Teams can choose a team captain that will be the spokesperson for their team. Multiply Decimals Baseball Review Rules: 1. All students must attempt each problem for review. 2. Only the student who is batting will get a chance to answer. 3. The fielding team can work collaboratively to see if the answer is correct. 4. Good sportsmanship is required! Game Play: 1. One team is up to bat and the other team is playing the field. 2. The team that is up to bat will roll a dice to determine what type of problem they are attempting. Single - if they roll a 1 or a 4 Double - if they roll a 2 or a 5 Triple - if they roll a 3 or a 6 3. The player that is up to bat will answer the question. 4. The team that is fielding will determine if the answer is correct (only the team captain will speak). If the batter is correct, they go to the base that they rolled. If there is anyone already on base, they force them to go to the next base. If the batter is incorrect, they are out. 5. Once the batting team has 3 outs, the fielding team will be up to bat. 6. The game ends when both teams have been up the same amount of times. 7. The winning team will be the team with the most runs into home plate. This is one of my favorite ways to review because all students can get involved in the game regardless of whether they are "up to bat" or not. Students love the change of pace from a boring test review too! This would also make a great classroom transformation which may be in my future... State testing is a stressful time for students and teachers. I wanted to decrease that stress by doing a room transformation that would would effectively review math and reading concepts that would be fun and exciting! I am a firm believer that what students learn with joy, they REMEMBER. Doing something like this just days before our state testing, I was filled with self-doubt that I was making a bad decision... but I pushed away that self-doubt and took a risk.... and when the test scores came out in May, the decision I made was right! I could not have been happier, and I look forward to doing this every year. Here's how you can make this state-test prep room transformation happen in your classroom! SETTING UP - I used plastic table cloths as backgrounds purchased from Party City and Amazon. You could also just use green butcher paper and paint football plays on them! - I color printed and laminated team logos and attached magnets to display on the scoreboard. - Table cloths make any room transformation better in my opinion because it gives the illusion that the desks are 'gone' and it doesn't feel like a classroom! - I placed cones everywhere- you can get 5 of them for $1 at the Dollar Store!! - I went to grocery stores and asked for their decorations after the super bowl, and they were happy to give them to me! ACTIVITIES/IDEAS - Stay in character! I acted as the official ref for the week and wore my ref outfit every single day. - I emailed my students' parents a letter to print and give to their students. It was an NFL Draft letter letting them know that on Monday they will be officially drafted onto an NFL team. I LOVE sparking the curiosity of my students! - I put my students into groups of 6 and had 4 teams total, each named a different NFL team. I explained to them that each day they would be competing for the spirit seat! This was a HUGE success... if you can get kids excited about a toilet seat... you can do anything! I purchased a new toilet seat at Walmart and decorated it. Simple. - I gave them the challenge of creating an end zone dance with their team. I showed them an end zone compilation video on YouTube and gave them 15 minutes. This was not academic related, however, it was a great way for them to work together and communicate effectively as a team... it was also really fun! - I gave each team a quote that I wanted us all to remember and follow throughout the week. Each team discussed their interpretation of the quote and presented it to the whole class. I hung these posters up as a reminder of the expectations! - I setup a division relay, where students competed as a team to run and grab division problems and solve the problems together. *Make sure EACH teammate has the correct answer and the work to show for it. My rule for all games is 'no outs and no turns'. All students should be working. - At the end of each day, the team with the most points would win the Spirit Seat. We would have a mini celebration and I would take the team's picture and display it on the scoreboard. The team who won the seat the most times by the end of the week, would get to eat lunch inside the classroom that following Monday. - I used many TPT review games and task cards. Choose ones that fit your grade level. - Our favorite game was the Vaseline game! Each team got a bowl of Vaseline to put on their nose. They then raced to the table to grab a task card that was their teams color- no hands allowed! They came back to their team with the card, and all teammates needed to get the correct answer, and check with me before moving on to get another card. *TIP: I bought 5 jars of Vaseline... I only used 1, so don't over buy like I did. REMINDERS: - Explicitly discuss the behavior expectations - All year build a classroom community that emphasizes the celebration of each other. Teaching students that by uplifting others they uplift themselves, you are setting yourself up for a positive and fun room transformation. You will also avoid sore losers and teammates with bad attitudes. - Carefully take down all your decorations and keep them in one bin once your done! You'll be so happy next year when your don't have to buy anything. - At the end of the week, reflect on this transformation. What would you keep the same? What would you change or add? Write these things down and put them in the bin your decorations are in so you are better prepared for next year. - It's okay to start small and build on your materials each year. Even just making a few changes or implementing a few review games will make all the difference! I know your class will love this just as much as my champions did! So today I am super excited to share with you my room transformation that I did a few weeks ago. For my first room transformation this year I decided to do a football theme. What started out as just a transformation for a math review turned into why not make the whole day football themed! Go big or go home – right?? So this room transformation took on a life of it’s own and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! In this blog post I’ll take you through the decorations and different events of the day. I had a blast and my kids had a blast! It was probably one of the best days we’ve had this school year so far. Mrs. Naylor has created an adorable baseball-themed classroom helper board that will help you stay organized and add a splash of color to your classroom walls! With this bulletin board, your students are sure to "pitch in" where you need them! Baseball-Themed Helper Bulletin Board Background: Green bulletin board paper. Title: "We All Pitch In In _______________ (e.g. Kindergarten, Second Grade, etc.)". Border: Sports-themed bulletin board trimmer. Decorations: 1) The Baseball Diamond. On light brown bulletin board paper construction paper, draw a fan shape, modifying the lower corner to create a circle instead of a point. Mrs. Naylor cut a diamond out of the center of the fan to create a "grassy" infield when placed on top of the green background, but this is optional. If you should choose to cut the center out, also create a second, smaller circle to be placed in the middle of the cutout as the pitcher's mound. From white card stock or white construction paper, make home plate, the three bases, long thin strips to act as the baseline, and a small thin rectangle as an accent for the pitcher's mound. When the pieces are properly placed, glue them together and place the entire baseball field in the middle of your bulletin board. 2) The Baseball Gloves. You will need as many gloves as you have duties for your students to complete. Either purchase prefabricated glove cutouts, draw and trace your own, or use computer clip art to print and cut glove shapes onto brown construction paper. Label each glove with a different classroom job and arrange them around the baseball field on the bulletin board. 3) The Baseballs. Purchase prefabricated baseball cutouts or create your own using white card stock and a red marker (laces). Write individual student names on each baseball. Throughout the school year, whoever has volunteered or been assigned a certain classroom job, place their baseball in the designated glove. This is a cute idea that your students are sure to love!
