One major component of AVID's WICOR strategy is inquiry, and teaching the students to create higher order questions themselves. This word wall can also be used as posters and help your students master Inquiry, The word wall has 33 words organized into level one, two and three questions. Each word is color coded according to Costa's levels and has a student friendly definition, a graphic and an example. Using these cards in the classroom will help your students understand the not only the verb, but also how to create their own questions. Ways to use this resource: As a word wall, the students can reference the academic vocabulary when they are creating questions for socratic seminars, for Collaborative Study Groups, or AVID Tutorials As an Interactive resource: Give each student or group of students a word and have them create questions based on a text for their word. As a whole group lesson: The essential question would be: "What is the difference between level one, level two and level three questions". The students can create three column notes and compare how each verb requires a different understanding of the material. As a handout: I have created a 2x2 copy of the word wall that students can keep as a reference to keep in their AVID binder or in their interactive notebook.
This AVID strategy of layering focused notes is the perfect instructional routine to display for any class in any subject area! Layering is a strategy that clarifies the second and third phases of the focused note-taking process by asking students to revisit their notes multiple times, thinking critically with a different purpose in mind. Why layering? Each layer added to the notes is completed in a different color, so a student’s interactions are visible to the instructor and to the student. This not only allows the instructor to assess the quality of the student’s thinking and interaction with the content, but it also solidifies learning about the process and the content itself. Additionally, the use of color enhances retention for visual learners. Instructional Goals Students will: • Add layers of thinking to their notes to process and connect their thinking. • Use colors to show their repeated interactions with their notes. Materials needed If taking notes on paper, students will need a variety of colored pens, colored pencils, highlighters, and markers to use for the note-taking layers. Directions Provide time for students to complete each layer by adding to their notes with a different color. Work on one layer at a time. Consider whether developing learners need more structure or fewer components to add during each layering session, compared with more experienced note-takers. Have students keep a key to indicate what color is used for each layer (they can make their own key or use the example.) Click HERE to see our other AVID resources.
