From the author of Sisters in Arms comes the incredible, untold story of Effa Manley, a black businesswoman in the male dominated baseball industry, and, currently, the only woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 1930s, New York City An ambitious Harlem woman’s husband upends her social climbing when he buys a Negro Leagues baseball team and appoints her as the team’s business manager. Overnight, Effa Manley goes from 125th Street’s civil rights champion to an interloper in the boys’ club that is professional baseball. Navigating her way through gentlemen’s agreement contracts, the very public flirtatious antics of superstar Satchel Paige, and a sports world that would much rather see this woman back in her “place” at home, Effa ultimately whips her team, the Newark Eagles, into the Negro Leagues Champions of 1946. But how long will she get to enjoy the fruits of her success before Major League Baseball tears it all apart? Based on the incredible life of Effa Manley, an unforgettable and inspiring story about a woman with a dream who wound up with a baseball team.

by Bradley Zink (Author) So, you want to learn guitar? You've looked into the different styles of guitars and amps, gone through several different types of "beginner" and "how-to" books, only to get frustrated and confused. Yes, guitar, nor any instrument, is "easy" to learn. That's why you see all the great guitarists spend HOURS every day practicing, as well as learning. From the 1st time you pick up a guitar, until you've accepted that Hall of Fame induction, you will ALWAYS be learning. But, there is an easier method to get the basics of guitar down, learn to play some classic songs, and build the confidence you need to excel in guitar. In as little as 5-15 minutes, you can be playing songs, such as: Smoke on the Water, Another One Bites the Dust, Sunshine of Your Love, to name a few. And, at the same time, you will be learning the basic skills, such as: rhythm, timing, as well as how to play along in a group. With my simple, easy 15-minute guitar lessons, you will be jamming along to legends, such as: AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton and many, many more. We'll start with discussing the parts of the guitar, how to tune and strum. Next, we'll cover 7 notes and 6 basic chords. Then, putting those basics together, we'll quickly cover the basics of reading sheet music. #1 Indie Next Pick!A Hall of Fame LibraryReads pick! One of People's Best Books to Read in February A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis. Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast--again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange--again... Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It's clear from the way he tracks Misery's every movement that he doesn't trust her. If only he knew how right he was.... Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what's hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory...alone with the wolf. 'The Songwriter's Guide To Taking The Next Steps' was written for the aspiring songwriter who wants to do something with their songs and for the songwriter who is looking for a fresh perspective toward song placement. The author, John Mathis Jr., has been a songwriter, music publisher and music industry professional for over 20 years. His father was a BMI Award winning songwriter with 10 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees covering his music. During the past two decades, John received an inside view of what the non-songwriter thinks in the music business. Most songwriters believe "It's all about the song." Most non-songwriters in the music industry are mentally conditioned to recognize and see brands ... not necessarily songs. Sometimes doing something with your songs, is more about doing something with YOU. Many traditional topics are covered such as the reality of a songwriting career, co-writing, song demos, the importance of networking, performance rights organizations and whether to copyright your songs. Other chapters give insight and ideas for songwriters regarding getting out of the box on placement outlets, why building your brand is important and direction on building your brand. Additional topics are covered to give a well-rounded view of what it takes to make some of the next steps in a songwriting career. Templates for contracts are included in the last chapter to aid songwriters with developing their own publishing company. This book provides a simple, straight-forward approach for songwriters to follow. | Author: John Mathis, Jr. | Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform | Publication Date: Jul 05, 2017 | Number of Pages: 102 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1548507385 | ISBN-13: 9781548507381

Roxy Rogers: Your Destiny is Calling by Emily Siskin-Toy is the story of Roxy who is born into a family of baseball lovers, all of whom have been involved in some way in the sport. From her great grandpa to her parents, to her sister, all have featured in the Hall of Fame. From a young age Roxy is encouraged in the game of baseball, and there is no doubt she is very good at the sport. Everyone in the family can see her potential and they have great plans for her. The problem is that Roxy doesn’t really want to play baseball. Her secret is that she loves to sing, and every minute she gets when she is not playing baseball or practising, she sings. But she feels she can never tell her parents because they have such high expectations for her. The author, Emily Siskin-Toy, has done a clever job of weaving a story around the premise that what parents want for their child may not always be what they themselves want. Beautifully illustrated by Brian C. Krumm, the story follows Roxy on her journey for stardom in baseball until something happens that completely changes Roxy’s life and she is able to show her parents what her real love is – in this case, her destiny. It’s a story that encourages children to talk about their own interests and desires and also shows parents that their children may not always want to do what is expected of them. There is also an interactive treasure hunt as well as some facts about famous baseball players which makes this a story that can be discussed. It would be good for a parent to read to a child, as well as an older child reading alone.

The reading research and writing was done during class. •If you want to hold an event for parents, you can have a wax museum format where students stand in front of their life sized projects and read their reports when someone presses a "button". John R. Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, actor, and author. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. His genre-spanning songs and sound embraced country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. Born in Arkansas to poor cotton farmers, Cash rose to fame in the prominent country music scene in Memphis, Tennessee, after four years in the United States Air Force. Cash was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band characterized by train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanour, free prison concerts, and a trademark, all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black". He traditionally began his concerts by simply introducing himself, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash," followed by his signature song "Folsom Prison Blues". Much of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career. His signature songs include "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Get Rhythm", and "Man in Black". He also recorded humorous numbers like "One Piece at a Time" and "A Boy Named Sue"; a duet with his future wife, June Carter, called "Jackson" (followed by many further duets after their wedding); and railroad songs including "Hey, Porter", "Orange Blossom Special", and "Rock Island Line". During the last stage of his career, Cash covered songs by several late-20th-century rock artists, notably "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.
