Daniel Ridgway Knight - The Shepherdess of Rolleboise (1896) A dreamy mood prevails in this dignified image of a French shepherdess. The pastoral setting provides a poetic backdrop to her youth and beauty, creating a picture that erases the social realities of peasant life. Daniel Ridgway Knight, who was born in Philadelphia and expatriated to France in the early 1870s, was well aware of this painting's potential for success when it debuted at the Paris Salon in 1896; it combined the silvery gray palette and romanticized peasant subject matter that were then popular in Europe and in the United States. www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollection/objects/170

Acrylic polymer emulsion on gessoed hardboard 12 x 10'', created May 18- July 6, 2008, #146 The painting that attracted the most attention during the opening reception of my solo show at Handworks Gallery last October was ''Shooter marble in the Light''. It was sold even before the painting arrived in the gallery. There were several collectors interested in acquiring it. That evening, I was introduced to several patrons of the gallery and was approached to do a commission of this subject matter. They invited me to their home to do a photo session, where I photographed some jars, marbles and some of their glassware collection and heirlooms. They have an artist's dream house with great natural lighting coming from deep seated windows, and windowsills that become mini stages for still life compositions. I did a photo shoot of about 200 images. This is the first of several paintings that they have commissioned. The glass shelf on which the jar is lying on was set inside one of these deep seated windows in their kitchen. The marble on the far right has a reverse reflected image of their amazing sunroom. -Private collection
I am going to post about a six artists whose work I admire. They are also artists that you might not be familiar with. I say that because as I have tried to find more information about them, I haven't found nearly as much as I would have liked. Some of the pieces here I
Tea and Roses, 30 x 24 Tender Moment, 16 x 12 YAY, it's September; school days are here, and I, for one, have Beginning of the Year engraved in my mind to be this time after Labor Day. Although the fresh start in January is a nice re-boot, something about early fall says to me, "let's get going!" With that in mind, I have re-dedicated myself to daily drawing, whether on the cool (free) app "Paper" for iPad, or on canvas with paint in daily quick sketches. Such things increase confidence and freedom of expression -- if I'm not struggling with or constantly correcting the underlying drawing and shapes, I can actually sling some paint and be loose!! Last week, I joined several great art friends to paint and celebrate at a nearby lake and winery -- and Provence is soon on the horizon -- in fact, we leave next week for painting fun in France, truly a welcome and special time on this magic carpet ride :-) Le Metro, 16 x 8
They’re so small but so inspirational.
Struck by the sunlight playing over the remains of a family dinner, Mary Pratt had an epiphany that would influence the rest of her career. Her husband quickly took a few snap shots to preserve the moment; Pratt then captured the scene on canvas.

'At some point during the day, I try to set aside a block of time to spend with God. I spend time in prayer with Scripture....' As I continue to concentrate on times in my 'inner choir stall,' I realize that the 'block of time' prayer can be a life-changer. Yet this is the part of prayer that's most difficult for me. I sometimes put it off until I'm ready to fall into bed, and then find myself omitting it entirely. Sometimes I wonder what I might have missed on such days. What inspiration, guidance and insights did God have waiting for me? Were there special gifts? Was there a precious jewel I left, ignored and unwrapped, while I ooohed and aaahed over the world's offerings of glitter and plastic? We have talked before, here, about prayer with Scripture. We've also used numerous quotes by the writer known as "A Religious." Today we will combine the two, as we sit at the feet at this anonymous Religious and listen..... "1. Take your New Testament..... Forget everything around you and be, for the time, alone with Him whose life is described here by the Spirit of Love. He Himself addresses you from these pages with words of profound wisdom and divine compassion; words that have illuminated the centuries of human history with heavenly truth, and melted millions of human hearts to tears of compunction and love, nay more, words that have bound souls to Him with the strongest bonds that could be forged on earth, and thus bound, enabled them to suffer torments for His love.... "2. Read some words or a few lines very slowly, read them again, and then wait for a moment and ask Jesus what He wants here to reveal to you about His love. Read them once more, and talk them over quietly with yourself and with Jesus... Keep on doing this until the words begin to live. Be like the lover of music who plays a short, beautiful melody, and repeats it, again and again, until his soul is transformed by the harmony. "3. Meditation from the New Testament will make us know Our Lord as scarcely anything else can do, for the original Author is God Himself, and it contains the history of the Word make flesh, Jesus Christ... The innermost reason for the fruitfulness of God's Word is that Christ is ever living; He is ever the God Who saves and quickens... Love, become great and burning by contact with God, takes possession of the powers of the soul, renders it strong and generous to do perfectly all the Father's will, to give itself up wholly to the divine good pleasure. What better or more fruitful prayer than this? What treasures await the searchers of the Gospels! Oh, if only we knew the gift of God!" (from Fervorinos From Galilee's Hills, compiled by a Religious, Pelligrini, Australia, 1936, pp. 26-29) If only we knew, indeed. I can imagine a giant pile of gifts just stacked up, waiting, gifts of joy and strength and wisdom that I've shoved into a corner; gifts in packages gathering dust. Even now, a new one for today is being wrapped and labeled and offered. Will I toss it aside, ignore it, say I have a lot to do but thank You anyway? Or will I open it? I choose. I am going to be in a group show called "Get Centered" at the Columbia Center for the Arts, Hood River, OR. The painting below is for that show, that opens June 3. The daily painting that I am selling online was an initial study for the larger 6"x18" painting below. Oil on canvas panel - Öl auf Malplatte - huile sur carton entoilé Study for Six Cups:: 6x6 inches :: oil on panel :: Six Cups :: 6" x 18" :: oil on raymar panel Part of my inspiration for the larger painting, was a combination of the Queen of Cup Painting, Carol Marine, and Nancy Switzer, who paints very cool "stacks" of things. I love both of their painting styles. This is my response to the Show, "Get Centered" which is open to interpretation - to me it means Balance... literally! I'm going to do more paintings for the show, maybe I can balance more than 6 cups! I just don't need an earthquake right now, please... Show opens June 3 from 6-8pm reception, for the month of June, "Get Centered" month at Columbia Center for the Arts, 215 Cascade St, Hood River, OR 541-387-8877
