Assessment is an important part of planning, but how do you assess all aspects of reading. Jennifer Serravallo has great recommendations in her book, and this post reviews her ideas.
Dynamic narrative assessments using story retell can provide educators and speech-language pathologists with valuable information about a student's literacy skills and their ability to think through events. Due to copyright laws, I cannot attach and sell the scripts I have created as my assessment tools. Choose a selection of books, wordless are best or cover up the words, and create a script for yourself. Use that script to tell the student the story, then have them retell the story to you. More directions are included on the score sheet. This is a great way to quickly screen an entire class. If a student does poorly on the first story, give them the chance to retell another before you determine if there is an impairment.

The first couple of weeks of school is all about settling in, getting our feet under us (especially me!), and finding our inspiration.
