As teachers, we know that we are ALWAYS assessing, and using that information to guide our instruction. With the help of tech, that has never been easier.
Welcome, friends! This is the last installment of my series on vocabulary instruction, and it's all about the A-word. Yep. Assessment. Were you thinking I'd say something different? 😳 All joking aside, this part of your flow of vocabulary instruction is juuuuuust as important as any other part, even though it can sometimes feel like a pain to tackle. I'm sure you assess your kids' vocabulary learning. And if you're like (the old) me, you probably have students complete some kind of fill-in-the-blank, matching, define-the-word-and-use-it-in-a-sentence type of test to see whether the learning 'stuck,' right? Seems to make sense. If you have a vocabulary curriculum or component in your ELA set, there might even be a set or ready-made quizzes you can use. Quick and easy. Score and grade. Done. ✔️ So simple, buuuuttt, maybe it's a little too simple. The thing is, traditional vocabulary assessments aren't really telling us that much about the actual mastery of the word. Mastering those kinds of tests is really about a child's memorization skills, isn't it? Sure, they can get all of those things right on the test this week, but what about when it comes to using it in their writing next week. We've got to get past providing quizzes that require short-term memorization and move into assessment activities that require more critical thinking and creative use of the words. But, how, right? Well, I have three ideas to present to you (though I'm POSITIVE there are more). *If you have any other great ideas you think I should add, PLEASE leave a comment or send me an email. I'd be happy to expand on this list with your great ideas!* Complete the Clause One way to up the critical and creative thinking factor on vocab assessments is to create a clause/sentence with the vocabulary word italicized. Instead of ending the sentence with a period, end it with a semicolon and have students write the second clause so that it explains the italicized word. Upper-grade example: You write: The hikers ascended as quickly as possible to the summit of the mountain ahead of the deluge; Students write the next clause: the extreme rainfall would have made it very dangerous for them to continue. Lower-grade example: You write: Campers at the park finished the shelter just in time; Students write: now they will be protected from the wind and rain. Since this is a fairly complex thinking task, using only 4-6 words is probably the best idea. Is that right? This time, you will write different complete sentences with the vocabulary words italicized. Sometimes the sentences should use the word incorrectly, and sometimes they should use the word the right way. Students need to decide whether the italicized word is being used correctly or not and justify their response with an explanation. Modified Cloze Vocabulary words are written into a passage, then deleted and left in a word bank. Students choose words from the bank to complete the sentences, using context clues for assistance. Simple enough, right? How does this fit into a differentiated classroom-- will I have to create 30 different tests? The short answer is not really! You should be able to create one test for each list of words provided to the students in your class. If you've given your class three or four different lists of words, yes, you'll need to create a three or four different tests. But you really only need to choose the most important 4-6 words from each list and test on those. It's more work initially, but once they're created you can reuse them for years to come! A Trick to Make it Easier One fun (and potentially time-saving) way that you can put a twist on these assessments is to allow students to submit their own clauses, sentences, or passages to be used for the assessments. You can choose from the submissions and use those for the quiz. Of course, students will need lots of practice writing the passages, sentences, and clauses to be meaningful, but this provides students with a big motivator and an authentic audience for writing, so it seems like a win-win to me! One Note of Caution: As with anything new in your classroom routine, children should have plenty of opportunities for practice and be witness to lots and lots of modeling for these vocab strategies. You should feel confident by the time they are completing these activities on their own that students are truly showing their vocabulary learning and not getting hung up on directions or task complexity. Every year I give my students a questionnaire to complete on the first day of school. Later that night, when I have finally recovered from the excitement of the first day, I sit down with my stack of questionnaires to read all about my new students. My students' responses are such an important piece in getting to know each and every one of them. While there is a whole list of get-to-know-you questions for students to respond to, there are five questions that I make sure to pay extra close attention to: What do you like to be called? This question might seem like an obvious one, but I speak from personal experience when I tell you that this question can make such a big difference for certain students. My name is Rebecca, but as a kid I ONLY went by Becky. Every year, when my teachers would call my name during attendance on the first day, I would simply respond with "HERE", instead of letting them know that I preferred to be called Becky. I was painfully shy as a child and too afraid to speak up. Often it was not until Back to School Night, or even conference time, when teachers would meet my parents and learn that I preferred to be called Becky. It may seem like a small thing, but it was a HUGE deal to me as a child! On this same note, it is just as important to students that we know how to PRONOUNCE their names. It is definitely worth the extra effort to make that connection with students, and make them feel valued in our classrooms. What is something that makes you feel proud? This question is the one that allows me to make connections with my students. This is where they share what they're good at in or out of school. It gives them a chance to reflect on what makes them feel good about themselves. For me, it helps me to start conversations with students, recommend books they might like, or encourage other interests or activities that may be related to what makes them proud. What is something that is challenging for you? This next one is an obvious one, but still an important one. Those things that challenge our students are the very things that might lead to anxiety or discomfort in the classroom. The responses to this question are ones that I like to keep in the back of my mind as I am preparing lessons for new and challenging content. It gives me a chance to think of ways to help students overcome those challenges, or to simply shift their mindset when it comes to challenges. What is something you wish I knew? I used to ask the question, "What is the MOST important thing you want me to know about YOU?" While I got some great responses to this question, I would also get things like "I am really good at baseball" or "I like math". Of course these things are important, but we cover interests and favorite subjects with other questions. I want to hear the one thing (or more) that my students need me to know about them, in order for me to be the best teacher I can possibly be for them. A few years ago, a teacher named Kyle Schwartz posed this question for her students. She shared some of the responses on social media, highlighting the need for teachers everywhere to truly get to know their students and what they might need. Needless to say, this question is now asked on my questionnaire. What is something you expect from me as your teacher? We discuss so many expectations that we have for our students during the first week of school. I also think that it's important to see what our students expect from us. I am always surprised by my students responses to this question. They are often honest and specific about what they need. I have had students share that they like to have fun, but that they need structure. I have also had students share that they expect me to listen to them. Leave it to our students to remind us what it takes to make us better teachers! Believe it or not, students' responses to these questions stick out in my mind throughout the year. I always keep their responses in the back of my mind as I am interacting with my students, planning lessons, or even dealing with challenges. You can only do test packets for so long before you completely lose engagement. For my fourth and fifth graders, one day of worksheets was all they could handle. This is probably because they were used to hands-on activities in my classroom. It's tough to find a balance between preparing for the test (with problems similar to the ones in the packet) and practicing the skills in more engaging ways. Here are ten activities to try in your classroom instead of test prep packets: Quick STEM Challenges 15-20 minute STEM challenges are a great way to break up the day before testing. Not only do these short challenges get students out of their seats, but it allows them to have a very educational brain break. STEM centers where they can build different things are also a great option! Escape Challenges Escape challenges usually take about 90 minutes, but can provide practice with the same types of question students would see in a test prep packet. Students are more engaged in practicing these problems because everything is in the form of a puzzle that they have to work together as a team to solve. My escape challenges have accountability built in, so that all students have to participate and solve the problems. You can read more about escape challenges in the classroom on my blog. You can also see an example of a 4th grade teacher using this for test prep in her classroom here. Genius Hour Genius hour is a more open-ended approach to learning. During this time, students will work on passion projects. This time isn't wasted, though. During genius hour, I ask my students to incorporate three things they learned this school year, from any subject. They share this with other students, as a reminder of some of the knowledge we learned that may be on the test. You can find out more about genius hour here. Project-Based Learning I use project-based learning (PBL) throughout the year to learn and apply standards, but it's even more commonly used towards the end of the year to apply standards to real life situations. I love it so much that I even wrote a book of real-life project ideas for the 3-5 classroom. Project-based learning can be built around science, math, reading, social studies, and more. Kid in a Candy Store by Performing in Education Simulations Simulations are another version of active learning. A simulation puts students through a staged replication of an event or concept that the teacher wants to review. Role-paying is a huge part of simulations, and is a great way to learn! Science Labs Observing math and science during a science lab is a great way to practice for state testing if your students get tested on science. Your students are far more likely to remember a concept that they observed during a lab than one they saw on a test prep question. Service Projects Completing a service project before testing can help boost confidence and receive stress. You can definitely incorporate some key math standards in there as well, if you're raising money as a part of it. Have your students brainstorm ideas for service projects, and work tougher as a class to decide on one that everyone would be interested in. Centers If you absolutely have content to review, try using it in a center instead of a test prep packet. This allows students to get up and move around, instead of sitting in their seats for an extended period of time. You can also make the questions into games as a part of your centers, and your students will love those even more! Using Tech This is a pretty broad idea, but I look for ways to incorporate the test prep questions we need on the technology we have. When we finally went 1:1 a few years ago, students made test prep games using the problems I provided and other students played them. Bring in as much technology and gamification as you can with what you have. Read-Alouds Read-alouds are a special treat for students. I've used read-alouds as a way to sneak in reading and writing review for years. I let my students pick a book they're interested as a special treat and read it aloud to them. We stop throughout the chapters and discuss things like theme, character traits, plot, etc. I also have them journal about the book, and we get grammar and writing practice through that. I love read-alouds that make students think. Here are my choices for end of the year read-alouds: 4th Grade: Rules by Cynthia Lord 5th Grade: The Giver by Lois Lowry. 6th Grade: The Maze Runner by James Dashner What activities do you do with your students instead of test prep packets?

Many states have adopted a TDA (Text Dependent Analysis) style assessment for the writing component of their state test. Spanish is not my native language and I don't have a Spanish-speaking husband I can speak with. Here are 6 tips to maintain your Spanish.
Standardized test! Ugh! Every year I dread the time when I have to really start to think about, “the test”. The pressure is exhausting! It wasn’t until this year that I started to really focus on the verbs of the standards. You can read about that here. Teaching students what it means to explain, cite, demonstrate, and categorize are among 42 of the words that my students interact with throughout the year. We have a test prep interactive notebook that we add to. Students are introduced to a word, they place the word in their notebook along with its meaning. Students provide a synonym and an antonym, then provide examples on how the word may be used in both math and reading. We continue to refer back to the notebooks throughout the year. It has been a powerful tool! When a student comes across a word in daily practice or on a test, they like to go back to their notebooks and add the example. There have been many ah-ha moments, which is SO exciting! You can find the Interactive Notebook for Test Prep Vocabulary Notebook shown above HERE or by clicking the image below. To add a little fun we started playing bingo with these powerful verbs. Since there are 42 verbs that we have covered at this point, I usually choose about half of them at a time when playing. Students know which verbs will be called out during bingo, so they pick 16 of the words to place on their board. Then the fun begins. I read the definition and/or give an example of how the word would be used. For example, if the word is “cite” I may simply read the definition. My favorite is to give them an example, because it seems to be more meaningful. For example I may tell them they may need to do this when describing a character and need to prove a point. The traditional rules of bingo are followed, and the students love it! They are having fun playing a game while reviewing these crucial verbs! Amazing! Meaningful, easy ways to encourage and motivate the students in your classroom during standardized and state testing.
When our students hear the word "test" they cringe and you can see the fear on their face. When we start to talk about the standardized test, that fear turns to panic and sheer horror. Thoughts flood their minds, "I'm going to have to repeat 5th grade! My parents are going to ground me forever if I don't pass this test. Maybe I can pretend I'm sick and get out of the whole test. I wonder if I broke my writing arm if I would have to do it?" After 40 years of combined teaching at grade levels where standardized tests are administered, we have developed a TOP 10 LIST that we think will help not only your students, but yourself cope with the "stress of the test." #1: Treats! What student, or teacher for that matter, doesn't love treats? About a week before the test begins we read a letter to our students about how their parents can bring in healthy snacks and healthy drinks on the days of the test. This gets the students excited. You can find the FREE letter by clicking here. #2: Morning Meeting It is important to start off testing days with a short morning meeting. For those of you that have never done this, don't worry. Students need to be acknowledged and appreciated, especially on testing day. First, it's a simple greeting in the morning to everyone. We have used a koosh ball to throw around the room, have the student give high 5s to each other, and do a pinky shake to name a few. Next is a quick share. Some topics that we have done during testing are: raise your hand if you ate breakfast today, raise your hand if you got at least 7 hours of sleep and so on. The third activity is a cooperative game. This is a time to get up and do an activity together. The favorite activity of our classes is the beach ball toss. We bring a beach ball into the classroom and pick 3-4 students to be in a circle. Their goal is to see how long they can keep it in the air. Then we pick the next group until all students have been picked. The final part of the meeting is news and announcements. This is where we share what part of the test they will be doing that day, when snacks are, and any other events happening during the day. Students like to know the routine ahead of time. #3: Stress Chain Students always bring worries with them to the state test. To combat this, we created a stress chain activity that we do the day before the test. What the teacher needs are various colors of regular size construction paper. Take each piece of construction paper and cut into about 8 equal strips. Hand out two different colors of construction paper per student. Tell them that you want them to write their worries about the test on the paper. Some examples are: "I might fail. I might not know an answer. I will get nervous and forget everything I know..." After they have finished, have the class help you make them into chains by looping them together and stapling. Take the completed chain and tell the students that you are going to hang all their worries outside the classroom door. So when they come in to class tomorrow they are to leave their worries at the door! You can find a printable version of the directions for FREE here. #4: Test Taking First Aid Kit Another fun idea is to create a test taking first aid kit for the students to "use" during testing. The kit includes items that students could use during the test. Check out the contents of the bags and the FREE activity here. #5 Brain Breaks One important thing that you need to do with your class is to take brain breaks when portions of the test are complete. This could be the time that you have your snacks, or when you do some quick movement activities (jumping jacks, running in place, wiggling arms and legs..). Students need the time to get up and move around. Click here to purchase over 50 Brain Breaks that your students will love! #6 Sharpened Pencils Before testing begins, we make sure that EVERY student has at least two sharpened #2 pencils in their desks. We also make sure that we have a can of sharpened pencils available too. The last thing you want is for a student to panic when s/he breaks a pencil. #7 Bubbles It's not what you think! No, we do not allow bubbles in our classrooms, but that could be fun. Instead, we are talking about those fun bubbles that students need to fill in on the test booklets and/or answer sheets. If your students are grades 4 or higher they can probably do this on their own. If they are in a lower grade, we would ask for assistance from an aide in the school or someone that can help you do this ahead of time. If your students are doing this on their own, make sure to give clear directions. Something fun to do at the end, would be to give them a blank bubble sheet and have them make up designs. If your tests have move to computer-based assessments, bring in some bubble wrap for each student and let them pop away! #8 Music During our brain breaks we often turn on music to let the students unwind. Sometime it might be soothing classical music, or other times it is the music we downloaded on our ipods/devices that has more modern (appropriate) songs that the students would enjoy. They love it! Stations like Pandora have some great selections too! #9 Basketball Trash Shooting with stress chain. At the end of testing, we take apart our stress chain and hand back the pieces. Each student gets two shots at the garbage can after crumpling them into balls. They have a blast with this! #10 Ice Cream Party What better way to celebrate the end of testing than with some ice cream. You become the students' waiter/waitress and serve them ice cream and various toppings. Check out the letter that we send home to ask parents for items for the party here.
