This was the second project I did with my Grade 7's during our "Art of Japan" unit. They designed their own kimono using a version of a bookmark template found here on the Crayola website. Kimonos are the beautiful traditional floor length robes worn mostly by Japanese women on special occasions. They are very expensive (often exceeding $10,000!) and beautifully patterned. I showed students examples of kimonos and then had them sketch ideas for a pattern in their sketchbooks. Image Source Image Source Each student got a blank template (which I modified from the one on the Crayoyla site) showing a very basic kimono with the robe, body and Obi (the sash). There were lots of Obi-Wan Kenobi jokes during this demo...lol I drew my own simple template and then photocopied it onto regular paper. When I do this project again, I would copy it onto cardstock, as the regular paper was too thin, really. I mean, it worked, but cardstock would be better (more sturdy). Draw your design/pattern in pencil then colour in with colored pencils or markers or watercolours. Students could do any type of pattern they wanted- not only traditional. Here's a camouflage pattern below, for example. Draw a little face. Colouring with markers..... Then cut all the pieces out... The Crayola sheet shows how to fold it all together- I also walked around and helped the kids individually fold it. It's quite simple. Here they are lined up and chilling out against the whiteboard. If you have a laminator, I would laminate them to make perfect bookmarks (and to make them sturdier). Ta da! On display with their 'Cherry Blossom' paintings.

Final product wise, this might just have been my FAVORITE project this past school year. I am so unbelievably proud of the work these 5th graders did on these! I found this project here via Pinterest. Thanks a faithful attempt! I Can Statements: I Can talk about stylized art I Can use the Library resource A-Z Animals Encyclopedia to research a food chain that includes 3 or more animals I Can show a food chain mouth-in-mouth using stylized images of plants and animals Day 1: Students came in with this image on the screen... I asked them to figure out what they all had in common, eventually they ended up describing stylized without even knowing it (I love when that happens!) and I revealed the vocabulary of stylized. To better explain I showed them this awesome graphic I put together in lucidpress.... After a bit more discussion we had a "quiz" where I put up an image and they had to guess stylized or realistic. They did perfect. Then I showed them our inspiration image... They just wrapped up a science unit about ecosystems and food chains so it was the perfect project to connect to the classroom. After explaining the I Cans and the how to do the research and navigate the site they were using for research, they grabbed laptops and got to work filling out the packet below. There was quite a bit of sketching involved but it really seemed to help them understand how to break down their animals and plants. Day 2: After I approved their sketches they got to work! They had an option to draw and color with colored pencil or to collage with paper. We took about 4 class periods total on this, 1 for intro and research, and the rest were workdays. Next time I will probably have them writing something to go along with them when they are displayed. I just can't contain how happy these make me!

Our family was excited to review Peter and the Wolf from Maestro Classics. We have reviewed for them in the past, so we knew what a treat this would be! I remember, as a kid, listening to my Peter and the Wolf record on my little, white, Holly Hobby record player. It was fun to share the story with my kids. What I didn't know was that composer Prokofiev began writing music at the age of 5! This we learned from the teaching tracks on the CD we received. The first time we listened to it, I put it on our school room computer and listened with just my students. The second time, I popped it in the van CD player on the way to take the high schoolers to school. Their school is not very far away, but because of traffic, it takes about 20 minutes to get there in the morning, so I knew we'd have time to get into the story. The CD begins with an explanation of which instruments represent which animals in the story. This is very helpful for kids, otherwise they may not have caught on to the meaning of the music. Then the story begins, with a few sentences being read, and then the music for that portion being played. I found an instrument worksheet for the kids to do to introduce them to different types of musical instruments. I loved the way my older kids got into it! When they introduced the music for the cat, Sam said, "I can picture it playing with a ball of yarn!" When the duck got swallowed, he said, "Dangit! I liked the duck!" I found it interesting that this version of the story ends differently than the one I remember as a child. In addition to being a wonderful story all on it's own, Peter and the Wolf is a fabulous jumping off point for a study of Russia. I told my kids, "My great grandparents were Germans who immigrated from Ukraine when it was part of Russia." So we looked up the Russian flag and colored maps of Russia. I played the musical (instruments only) track of the CD while we worked on our coloring pages and worksheets. I've mentioned that Katie has just learned the names of all the continents. Now it's time to start filling in some of the countries. She learned where Russia is on our Hugg-A-Planet. We also took this opportunity to learn about Russian nesting dolls. I think it would be fun to paint a set of these someday. And we learned about wolves, of course! Because of what we've been learning in science, the kids were able to deduce that wolves are vertebrates and mammals. Maestro Classics offers curriculum guides on their website for all their fabulous tales, as well as little activity books nestled within the CD case. The curriculum guide was my inspiration for coming up with other Russia related learning activities to tie into our listening experience. One of the suggestions was to watch the movie Anastasia, which we found on Netflix and watched as a family. If you have a road trip planned over the upcoming holidays, you'll want to check out all the great audio dramas that Maestro Classics has to offer and bring some along to keep your family entertained on the road. The pictures are VERY general and so the work should be backed up with a continent folder or box with more items of interest from the continent and pictures of people, plants, buildings, animals etc. I suggest backing these cards on the appropriate colour card.
