Analyzing writing curriculums, planning writing workshop and teaching writing lessons can be overwhelming. You might think, how am I going to fit everything in and produce successful writers? Where do I start? What skills do they need? This post will share the 7 BASIC WRITING LESSONS that every teacher should teach! With this basic knowledge, students will be able to perform other writing assignments more effectively. The following skills are not only effective in upper elementary, they are often needed at the middle school level for review or the primary level for differentiation. So yes, every teacher should teach them! If you start with these 7 fundamental skills, it will set the expectations for your writing lessons and assignments throughout the year! Frequently Asked Questions What are the basic skills and what order should I teach them? Sentence Structure 1. Complete Sentences Lesson for complete sentences 2. Fragments Lesson for fragments 3. Run-ons Lesson for run-ons Paragraph Writing 4. Topic Sentences Lesson for topic sentences 5. Relevant Details Lesson for relevant details 6. Transition Words Lesson for transition words 7. Closing Sentences Lesson for closing sentences How much time should I dedicate to teaching these fundamental skills? I recommend one day for each skill. If you spend a whole writing block for each skill, students will benefit from the practice. How do I teach each skill? First: Start with an anchor chart explaining the skill. (See each lesson link above for effective anchor charts.) Second: Provide examples. Students can share examples too! Next: Students should take notes. I love using Interactive Writing Notebooks to take notes. Research supports the use of interactive notebooks through studies on multiple intelligences, the brain and note taking. Here are a few videos to Set Up Interactive Writing Notebooks. Click photo for the Upper Elementary Version. A Primary Version is also available. Then: Identify the skill. Provide practice sheets and task cards for students to practice identifying the skill in sentences and paragraphs. Last: Apply the skill. Students should have the opportunity to write their own sentence or paragraph to apply the particular skill. What if I can't fit the lesson in one writing block? If you can't extend the days to complete them, there are other ways to get the whole lesson in. You can put practice sheets or task cards in a center, or you can have students apply the skill for homework or morning work the next day. What if my students, some of my students, or absent students can't do interactive notebooks? Make a small anchor chart to put in their notebooks with the same information! If you don't have a printable poster, take a picture of the anchor chart you used in class and print them off! Last year I saw a great post from Heidi at Heidi Songs about using her sight word videos with white boards. It was a big hit with my kiddos last year and today I decided we were ready to try it with this group. They LOVED it! It's a super simple activity that gets them connecting with the videos in a whole new way. Total engagement......very little effort. Win-win! To keep them from writing/ erasing/ writing/ erasing.....you get the idea....I simply didn't give them an eraser and told them not to erase with their fingers. We wrote each word one time and we kept going until our boards were full. That gave us about 13-15 songs which was a full 20 minute activity. They were sad when it was done! I gave them a tissue when we were done to erase really quick (handing out erasers drives me crazy, a quick tissue for each pair makes for fast clean up). Here is a video example from last year. If you don't own the videos you can get them HERE. I also have the alphabet videos which we use at the beginning of the year. There are a ton of engaging videos to get you singing and moving in your classroom. We love the math videos too! We can't get enough of Heidi Songs in our classroom! How do you mix things up in your classroom? If you want to remember to check out Heidisongs save this post for later!

We don't do a lot of finger painting in our classroom, but we probably should! The children love to stick their hands and fingers into the paint - even when supplied with brushes and instructions to use them! :) This past week, I thought, why fight it? Painting is fun, but indulging in the act of dipping hands and fingers into the paint makes it an awesome sensory experience, as well! So we did some fall tree finger painting and saw quite the variety of results! There were trees with small fingerprint leaves evenly distributed around the page... trees with large blobs of leaves and fully painted trunks and branches... and then there were the full-on hand smeared extravaganzas! That reminds me. You'll want to have paint smocks on hand as well as some damp paper towels for finger wiping at the table! But surprisingly, the finger painting process was not much messier than when we use paint brushes. When I prepared this craft, I cut the tree shapes out of brown paper. The students then glued the tree cut outs onto a blue page before they started painting. Another option would be to print copies of a tree image on blue paper and then have the children do the painting directly on the page. The students could then colour or paint the tree trunk AND add the leaves. (And you would save time by not having to cut anything out!) If you'd like to try this craft in your classroom, you may want to download the free tree printable below. And if you'd like to try a similar, but more involved project, you may want to download this page of 4 trees. Your class could paint one for each season! If you decide to try worksheet #2, you may want to do one tree at a time to avoid confusion (and lots of smudging!) Since the trees on this printable are smaller, you may also want to consider having the students paint the leaves on these trees with a Q-tip rather than their fingers - or at least offering the suggestion!
