According to the story, a peasant named Timoteo Espinoza discovered the Estela in 1840, at a time when he was removing the earth in a field very close to the Chavín de Huántar Temple , he took it to his house to be used as a table. When the geographer Raimondi arrived, he was surprised to see that the underside of the slab has a very refined and exquisite design. He took her to Lima and thus saved her from destruction.
