IF you are like me, you are looking for FUN, yet simple projects for the end of the school year!! I got this idea from this fabulous blog called The Lost Sock I found these great videos to show the students before they get started! Bubbles from baris parildar on Vimeo. First we talked about the properties of bubbles. I blew some bubbles for the kids to look at (with their hands in their laps...pure torture) but I really wanted them to use their eyes. What shape is the shiney? Where is the light source? For example a window will make a window shaped shiney! What color are the bubbles and why do they start as a clear liquid and then turn rainbowy? 1 First students traced as many different circle shaped objects I could fine!! 2 They added at least two shineys to each bubble 3 Then colored the bubbles using oil pastels, and making sure to leave at least part of the bubble black to make it look transparent So, first the students started drawing bubbles individually... Then, one student suggested that they put their papers together and connect their bubbles. Within a few minutes, I had an entire class on the floor connecting EVERY one of their papers to make a huge bubble mural! They were SO excited and I loved the conversations I heard as they ALL worked together as one giant group!! The end product was a masterpiece and the kids were SO excited!! Some classes drew bubbles together to form words. You can see the words " Pie is Good" at the top of this class' Art! The great thing about this project is that its fun for ALL ages! My four year old (below) drew her own bubble artwork (all by herself) and included herself blowing the bubbles in the bottom corner! She had fun searching for circles in the kitchen. There are Tabasco bottle circles, and salt shaker circles, coffee can lid circles, a soda can circle! So get out your oil pastels and go create some Bubble ART to kick off the SUMMER!!!! The great thing about bubbles is that they are inexpensive and fun no matter what age you are! My daughter got a bubble blower last summer that blew small bubbles inside large bubbles! We took this picture last August!

After a major break up, I deeply believed that if I didn’t transform myself into a more likable woman, there would be no more happiness in my life. So I started to dispose of everything that defined the old “me”-things I did, said, and even believed, and in particular the way I interacted with men. I chose to “de-self” myself in order to please potential romantic partners. After a few years, though, I found that the more I de-selfed myself, the more I hated myself. I realized that suppressing the person that my life experience has created would not help with my romantic relationships, and was actually making me unhappy. I needed to find a way to accept myself for who I really am and to declare that acceptance to the world. Photography seemed a perfect way to do this, by allowing me to expose my fears and my own fragility in front of the camera. To illustrate feelings that are often difficult to explain, I combined a variety of physical props and materials with myself, usually posing with different male counterparts. For most of the images featured in De-Selfing, I chose to keep my own face hidden. I want viewers who have experienced similar loss, pain, and sadness to be able to project themselves into the frame. I also incorporated a lot of negative space in the images to evoke the feeling of isolation and sadness I was experiencing. Creating the images in De-Selfing has been a therapeutic process for me. Since starting the project, I have picked myself up piece by piece, gotten my confidence back, and been able to hear my own voice again.More info: hihsin.com

Philadelphia-based artist Maria Teicher’s latest body of work focuses on portraits and narrative paintings that feature disturbing yet delicate compositions. Each tells stories based on personal experiences in a very concise yet mysterious way. The open-ended yet evocative works give viewers a space to relate and “bring one’s own experiences into each piece." In an effort to convey sentiments of suffering or powerlessness, Teicher’s portraits often disguise, constrict and deform the human face. In her latest paintings, she tightly veils her subjects with clear or opaque plastic bags, playing with her audience's boundaries and fears.
I love, love, love silhouettes! I remember when my little guy was in preschool and his teachers traced his silhouette. I still have it to this day, framed, and on display. I think a silhouette is like frozen time. You can see the chubbiness in their cheeks, their hairstyle, their serious faces. They are timeless. So, I am doing a silhouette project again this year with my 5th graders. These are different and more artistic than a typical cameo. The objective for my students was to create a collage of things that represent them at this point in their lives. So, some are doing shopping, sports, food, etc. I also told them to add text- words that represent them (ie. kind, athletic, smart, funny, reliable) to get them thinking of some traits that are unique to them personally. Here are some photos that I found on Google Images that I am using for my powerpoint (not my student work, just samples for inspiration): This one is from princetonol.com This one is from artismessy.com I will post some of my students' creations when they start to come together next week :)
