Well, hello! This post has been a long time in the making. Mostly because it took me a long time... to make it. :D I'd like to thank so many people for the huge success that my little spring chickadee card became! It kind of went from a blog hop, to Pinterest, to some forums, back around again... and I've had loads of requests for "how-to's" and tutorials! The original chickadee card can be seen here.. and I will be adding a quick link to my side bar as well. I thought that this time around, it might be fun to do a different kind of bird, and make the card for another season. Thus, the cardinal card has been created... and here are all the details. Both of these cards have been made with parts and pieces from the Close To My Heart - Art Philosophy cartridge. Yes, this is my new favorite, and most used cartridge. More so than "George" even, because it has all and more of the same basic shapes.. plus so many other great things. Here is my tutorial video, which explains how to put the card together, and also how you can create a system for building your own cards from this great cartridge. Here is the "recipe" for making the card exactly as it is shown. I'll separate by color, so that you can cut your pieces more easily. One 12x12 sheet of each color is plenty to cut all of the pieces that you need to make this card. Red Cardstock: The base is "Square 5" on page 63. Cut two of these at 5" Also, cut the Square 5 "Layer" for the frame, also at 5" Cut one bird, pg. 51. Cut the bird at 2", cut two "wings" at 2 1/4 inches and one "wing" at 2" The 2" wing is the piece that makes his little crest. (please note, if you have the 6" Cricut machine, you can still make this card. Just cut the wings at 2 1/2" instead.) Cut one decorative Layer from "Oval 4" on page 52. This makes the frame for your large oval. 2 1/2" (Or if you prefer, you can cut this one from green. 2 1/2") Cut some holly berries from page 46, at 1" Cut one "Deco Layer" from page 56 for the sentiment frame. 1" White Cardstock: Cut the "Shape 5" using shift and "Font Layer" from page 64 at 5" - this should be the snow mat. When assembling the card, you'll need to trim the corner bits off of this, so that they don't hang over the edge. Cut two of the "Square 5" on page 63 to use to line the inside of your card.. 4 3/4" (or 4 1/2" for the smaller machine.) Cut one "Oval 4" from pg. 52 - this is the background oval, behind the bird - 2 1/2" Cut one "Shape 4" from pg.56, this is for your sentiment. 1" Green Cardstock: Cut one branch from pg. 43 - cut the "layer" one, it is the one without leaves. 1" Cut holly leaves from pg. 46 - cut about 5 leaves at 1" and 5 leaves at 3/4" If you decided you like the green frame better than the red, this is where you should cut one more decorative Layer from "Oval 4" on page 52. Other CTMH products that I used in the making of this video include: The sentiment stamp - the set I used is retired :( Stardust Glitz - The CTMH version of "Stickles" - they are wonderful. The Rub & Remove Eraser - this is a must-have for getting those gluebers. :) "Bitty Sparkles" which are the self-adhesive gems. I used a black one and several plain ones. The little red square pigment pad is a wonderful new product, they distress things so nicely and can also be used for stamping. They are sold in sets of 10, so that you would get one of each of the color families. Look up the "Exclusive Inks" mini pigment pad sets. The one I used is called "Ruby." The CTMH Bonding Memories glue pen would be a wonderful kind to use for this project. It is very similar to the "Zig" glue that I used in my demonstration. I'm sure that there are more, I think that you can see my small blue scissors that I use for fussy cutting and a bit of our baker's twine. I do love all of the CTMH papers that are available, especially because it takes the guess-work out of matching your colors. However, when I am making this kind of intricate, Cricut pieced card, I prefer to use thicker, solid core cardstock with a little bit of texture. CTMH cardstock is currently white core, and it leaves so many white "unfinished" edges that it would be impossible to fix all of the tiny edges in a project of this size. I miss my CTMH solid core cardstock a lot. Just sayin'. :) If you're interested in learning more about Close To My Heart and this really great cartridge, the best way to go about that is to go to the Close To My Heart website and do a simple little search to find a consultant in your area who can help you find the best way for you to get your hands on one! While I was waiting for Mr. Fed Ex, I decided to finish up the 3D project that I started designing for my upcoming Papers Pads and Pictures Team. The top and bottom of the box are cut using the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. The sides were cut and scored to fix the 4 1/2 inch box. The flowers were also cut using the Art Philosophy Cartridge along with the leaves. Each piece was cut using Colonial White and then sponged in Twilight and Cocoa. The flourishes are from my new "go to" stamp, "The Best Things" and the sentiment is from "A Tweet." As an upline, my goal is to make do my very best to help my downline grow. I work hard to foster open business communication, sharing ideas and expanding our creativity. I know that I've said it a few times, but this really is a great time to think about becoming a Close To My Heart Consultant. Christmas Ornament handcrafted from double sided paper This gorgeous design was lifted from Becca Feeken who made an amazing tutorial using a Spellbinder diecut. Her post is here. She is an amazingly talented woman! I am so happy that I discovered her blog a couple of months ago. The top view of the ornament As soon as I saw Becca's video tutorial, I knew that I wanted to make something similar using one of the ornament shapes on the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. This shape is 3". By turning the mat around, 9 shapes will fit on one page. 12 x 12 Cricut mat with ornaments cut from retired B & T paper Becca made a glue dot template and therefore I knew I needed to copy that step with my shape as well. I used a scrap from the Cricut cut and guessed about where to place the dots. It worked! Gluedot placement for Ornament1 using Art Philosophy cartridge The design is listed on page 33 in the Cricut guide book that comes with the cartridge. Two 12 x 12 sheets of paper were used to cut 18 identical shapes. Two buttons were sewn onto ribbon from the CTMH Bling Assortment The ribbon matches the retired Evensong B & T paper. Any color of two-sided thin paper would work beautifully. I am trying to use up my stash of papers and ribbons, so that is why I chose this patterned paper. The new CTMH paper is too thick for this type of ornament. I'm making some other ornaments out of cardstock that I'll post soon. This double gate fold card looks tricky, but isn't! Don't you love that? Impress friends with your crafting! One of my roommates at the CTMH Convention (Rema) made a card like this and it was amazing - I had to figure out how she did it! Here are some close ups of the card: Above you can see the card opened up - plenty of room to write a Christmas message. The card above is a little different than the red stamped one - I added a border and some red stickles (glitter glue). My friend Lisa S. LOVES stickles and tells me that they always enhance a project and she's right! I just get impatient waiting for it to dry... Here are all of the parts and sizes for my little chickadee card. . . I made him for the "Cards With Critters" bloghop on 02/02/2013 It might surprise you to find out that I used just one Cricut Cartridge for this project. It's called Art Philosophy and I just love it for the pretty shapes and pieces that it makes! The card base is A2 size or 4.25 x 5.5" The yellow mat is just "one smidge" smaller than this. Basically I took a 4.25 x 5.5" piece and shaved just 1/8" off of each side. (top and side only - not all four sides!) Next I cut a square of green cardstock at 3.75" and a square of blue cardstock at 3.5" Time to use your Cricut cartridge!! :) Cut the pretty doily out of white cardstock. It is on the same button as the Christmas stocking, Pg. 67. Be sure to press "Font Layer" and "Shift" to get the doily and cut one at 4" Since you are cutting on white cardstock, this is a great time to cut out a 2" bird - pg. 51 Keep using the white cardstock and cut out one "Rctngle5" at 1.5" Then cut several of "flower 8" - pg 50... at 1/2 and 3/4" sizes, or as big as you like. I cut white flowers... but sure, you could cut pink or whatever you want. :) Next, cut the Branch from pg. 35. Cut one "Branch2" at 2" out of green cardstock. While you are at it, cut the marquee sign out of the green cardstock by pressing "shift" and "decorative layer" at 1.5" Out of brown cardstock, cut the branch by pressing "Layer" and "shift" to get the brown branch at 2" You need two more birds if you want to make the chickadee like mine. Cut the bird out of black cardstock at 2". Switch to grey cardstock and cut the bird at 2" and the wings at 2 1/2". (I liked my wings more when cut at a little bit larger size.) I used one of those tiny roller-ball type Zig glue pens to glue the pieces together. If you want to make a chickadee, use the black paper as the bottom layer. Without sounding gross, just use your scissors and cut the head off of the grey bird in a rounded shape like I did. Then I took the white bird and cut the breast shape and a little "swipe" of white for his face. Glue the face swipe part down first, then glue the grey headless part, then the white breast. The last bit was just to add the wing. The bird is adhered to the card using dimensional squares. For the sentiment I stamped and embossed with black embossing powder. Make sure you do this on the white marquee sign after you check placement - meaning put the green layer down on it lightly before stamping the sentiment, so it is centered where you want it. I also adhered the marquee sign sentiment to the card using dimensional squares. I added some bling to the corners of the doily and to the center of each of the flowers. I also added a tiny black gemstone for his little eye. I love how this turned out and I think I will experiment with some different kinds of birds - maybe robins and bluebirds and a cardinal for winter! Thanks for stopping by to see the instructions! Guess what I'm doing this weekend???? My FIRST Expo! I've got a booth at the Utah Valley Women's Expo this weekend! If you'd like to come (for free), I've posted the ticket image at the end for you to download and print as many times as needed. I'm so excited and nervous. I already know what's going to be my favorite part. That's right...Make-n-Take! I've planned a few projects that I will be doing throughout the event. Check it out: Loving this purse! All the pieces were cut using the Cricut Art Philosophy. It's all about bling. A fun treat tube for Dad's day! I "mustache" you to come to the expo and stop at my booth to make this project. When the candy is gone, you can see the "secret" message on the tag. The tag blocks the candy dispenser. Clever! Thanks to Lisa Stenz for sharing her amazing design. I wanted to show case a technique rather than just papers and stamp sets so I have decided to play around with some retired Close to My Heart papers. I just want you to check out the ideas and then look at my website and see which paper and stamp sets you would love to use on one of these projects. The drape is actually pretty easy to make once you do it one time. I used a couple of retired papers to make these you could use any of the Close to My Heart papers since they are all two sided which makes them perfect for this technique. I watched several YouTube videos and found several different cutting sizes but this is what worked best for me. So here is how it is done, make a base card that is an A-2 (4 1/4 x 5 1/2), both of mine are done horizontally so I could showcase as much of the fold as possible. Next select the paper you want to use for your "drape" and cut it to 11 1/2 x 4" and score at 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10". Measure up the right side of your paper and mark at 1 1/2" from the top. Now place your paper on your trimmer (or if you are really good you can use scissors, that would not be me, LOL) on a diagonal and cut from that first score line at three inches up to the mark you made on the other end at 1 1/2". Now fold, starting at the left, valley fold, mountain fold, valley fold, mountain fold until you have your drape complete. I found a little adhesive behind each fold made it a whole lot easier for me to mount this on my card base. As you can see I added a little trim at the top (you could use ribbon) for the floral one I used what we Close to My Heart consultants refer to as a zip strip (each B&T paper comes with a cute coordinating 1/2 x 12" strip which works great for these kind of applications), on the Balloon one I just used a 1/2" strip of the strip from the other side of the paper that matched the revealed paper in the drape. The Happy Birthdays are stamped from a stamp set called Holiday Tags (D1560) which I love because it has lots of different holiday greetings and it also includes frames for the sentiments that can be cut out using the CTMH Artiste Cricut cartridge or can be hand cut. This one is retiring soon so if you are interested don't wait to long. Now for the embellishments, the balloons were cut from coordinating colors of cardstock using the CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge (Z1686) and I cut them at 1 1/4" and then wrapped them with thin bakers twine and tied them all together. The roses (I love these and use them on gift bags, tags and boxes all the time) were cut using the CTMH Artiste Cricut Cartridge (Z1790). I cut two white ones and then inked them for a neat affect. This cartridge is full of awesome 3-D items, I use it to make boxes and little purses and other items all the time. Here’s my first card from the 2013 CTMH Idea Book! It’s a cascading card, a design that I’ve been wanting to try since I saw one last summer. When I saw this stamp set, I knew it would be a good fit and started putting together the base shortly after ordering my 2013 Idea Book preview materials. Check back, I hope to publish a tutorial on making this card. This paper pack is Chantilly. You’re only seeing a glimpse of the paper. It’s the green background behind the Buttercup yellow flower and the bird. I cut that little guy from the other side of the same paper. The stamp set is Girls Rock C1538 and it’s compatible with the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge! The only thing I cut by hand was the little birdy in this whole card! One addition to the new Idea Book is a color pallet for each paper pack! This helped immensely in pulling together the inks I wanted to use for this card! Here’s the card when closed. It can easily be mailed. We have new bling! We have Green & Blue Epoxy bubbles. They’re nicely sized and so easy to work with. The smallest is 4mm which you can see on the butterfly below. We also have Pink Glitter Gems. They’re great! With the glitter, almost every shade will look great on a project. I’m not worried about having leftovers. Ever since I received the new CTMH Artistry cartridge, I've been wanting to play with the "weld" feature on my Cricut Explore to create a panel overlay. For this card, I welded a rectangular frame from the Art Philosophy cartridge with a floral overlay from Artistry to create this card: In order to get the overlay and rectangle to weld like I wanted, I had to "unlock" the images so I could stretch them. I began with the rectangle and edited it to be 4.25" W x 5.5" H. The border ended up being too thick, so I copied and pasted the frame, sized it down, then used the "slice" feature to cut the two images. I then unlocked the flower image and manually stretched it enough to get a few places on the top and bottom to touch the inside of the rectangle. Once everything fit, I hit "Select All" then right clicked and chose "Weld" from the drop down menu. If you own both Art Philosophy and Artistry, here's the file so you can download everything you need to recreate this (including the accent flower). If you aren't familiar with the "slice" and "weld" feature on your machine, I encourage you to go to the Cricut tutorials on their website. Once you've know how to use them, these features give you incredible artistic freedom. I sponged the background in colors for this week's Color My Heart dare: Honey, Pear, and Cranberry, glued my welded flower and rectangle piece over top, and added a banner stamped with the line and a sentiment from a stamp set called "Packages, Boxes, & Tags." It felt like it needed something more, so I cut a double layer flower from Artistry both in white, sponged the background flower, and added them to the banner. Again, something felt off, so I sponged a leftover bit of paper with more Cranberry, punched it out, and added a center to the flower. That grounded it so it wasn't "floating" and made the card feel finished. I'm pretty excited about how this turned out. I can see myself using this overlay for all kinds of cards and get a different look by varying the colors and intensity of the background sponging. Until next time, Becca
