Italian sculptor Aron Demetz (cousin of Gehard Demetz, whose work we featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 22) creates wood sculptures that appear distressed, burnt and scarred. The process of working with wood is a fundamental part of Demetz's aesthetic — instead of presenting polished and perfected works, Demetz celebrates the wood's textures and its transformation through various natural processes. The simplified, abstracted human figures can seem like personifications of the wood itself. Demetz is currently exhibiting new works at Gazelli Art House in London through June 5 along with Korean artist Shan Hur for their two-person show, "The Tainted." Take a look at some images of Demetz's sculptures after the jump, images courtesy of the artist.
Italian sculptor Aaron Demetz (previously) will have several new figurative sculptures on view at Gazelli Art House in London starting March 28, 2013 as part of the show The Tainted with Korean sculptor Shan Hur. The new works continue to explore Demetz exploration of the human figure and show his incredible skill in carving wood. Via the gallery: For The Tainted, renowned Italian artist Aron Demetz will present a new body of sculptures, which are a continuation of his long-standing fascination with the human figure. More

Matthias Verginer was born 1982 in Bressanone, Italy. From childhood he has been exposed to creativity and working in a workshop. After compulsory education he attended an art school in Selva Gardena, with a focus on commercial art and sculpture. In his third year, he then decided to focus more on sculpting. After graduation and a year of studying with his Father, he worked with sculptor Aron Demetz. Since 2003 Matthias has been working independently in a workshop in Ortisei, Italy, which he shares with both his twin brother and father. Matthias explains his work by saying, “After a traditional sculpture training I developed pieces that are outspoken about life. My work combines nature and humans in an extremely unusual way. At first glance they may look entertaining or strange, but there are deep and multi layered stories behind each of the works.”
