I have a long history of military family members. In fact, I have three active members in various branches right now. While we teach our children that God is our first priority, we also want them to know the sacrifice our own family members and those who have gone before make/made to help retain our freedom in this country.
I am using music of the armed forces with many of my classes this month. It ties in nicely with election day and Veterans Day. Most of my students were familiar with a few of the songs and really enjoyed hearing different versions and learning a little about the history of each branch of the military. Here are the versions I'm using: Army: The Army Goes Rolling Along Marines: Marine's Hymn Navy: Anchors Aweigh Air Force: The Air Force Song Coast Guard: Semper Paratus We are using listening glyphs to record our observations about tempo, dynamics, tone color and personal preference. My 5th and 6th graders really enjoyed doing the glyphs as they rarely have an opportunity to color any more! It has been eye-opening for me to see how some students respond in this format. I'm definitely going to explore more ways to use this for listening activities. I am also using a presentation created by Sara Bibee that coordinates PERFECTLY with my glyphs and the armed forces bulletin board I have displayed. This handy guided listening unit lets me introduce each branch of the military and show students examples of each of the songs. My favorite part about this set is that the videos are linked via Safe Share TV. That means that I don't have to worry about what might pop up at the end of the video as an advertisement. We have used the same clipart in our projects so the listening unit and listening glyphs look like a seamless unit.

This year, National Poppy Day is May 28 and Memorial Day is May 30. Guest contributor Camille Ipsen of @notsomodernmillie has created a tutorial to help you participate in these days of remembrance. The tradition of wearing poppies is recognized worldwide as a way to honor the members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty. In the United States, we pay tribute to these brave men and women on Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. This sweet and simple poppy pin is a wonderful way to remember the fallen and show support for military families. Skill Level: Beginner Time: 1 hour Additional Supplies: Poppy Pin and Card Template (click to download) Directions: 1. Clink on the link above to download the Poppy Pin Template PDF. Print on cardstock and cut out individual pieces. 2. Trace pattern pieces onto the appropriate felt color. Cut. If you do not have a white marking pencil for tracing, a regular pencil or pen will work well. 3. Glue the poppy together by overlapping a small bit of each petal over the one before to form a circle. The base of each petal will meet in the center. For added dimension, you can slightly pinch or wrinkle the base as you glue it to the other petals. Set aside. 4. Cut the pom-pom in half. Use sharp scissors and multiple cutting motions until you have cut all the way through. This will be the flower pistil. If a child is making this craft, this step should be completed by an adult. 5. Cut a 3/4 x 4
