This sorting game would make a great class activity or station work. My students loved sorting all the apples into the different baskets and many said it was one of their favorite activities. Print out the baskets and apples that you want to use with your students choosing from all of the following: low so (or low sol) low la low ti do re mi fa so (or sol) la ti high do Note: all options come in color and black/white After printing have students figure out the solfege on each apple, then place it with the correct basket. It is that simple! Each solfege syllable has at least four apples with different do keys to really challenge your students. If your students enjoyed this activity I would love to hear about it or see pictures of it. Feel free to leave me valuable feedback on what you liked about this activity or how it could be improved. I'm always happy to hear what you have to say! This set of practice slideshows is meant to accompany the Kodály-Aspiring Recorder Method. Slideshows featuring text, solfege and no text/solfege for the 5 songs in the Do/Half Note concept of the method. Songs are: Apple Tree, Chain Chain Daisy Chain, King's Land, Mouse Mousie, Pease Porridge Hot 3 options: With words, with solfege, "You can do it" with notes only How this recorder method works: It seems like there is always one. There is that one student that can’t play the recorder pieces because they can’t hear how it is ‘supposed to sound’. They are frustrated, and you are frustrated for them. This method uses what they already know: solfege and rhythm syllables. Focusing on introduction of the fingering instead of the note name helps students understand by using a known concept instead of the idea of note names which can be very abstract for some kids. This system lends itself well to a ‘belt’ system too if you wish. Each belt would be at the completion of a concept/set of concepts. Some concepts are grouped together, others appear separate. The rhythmic concepts are not emphasized in this system, however the first few are introduced with the solfege to review. Some rhythmic elements are not introduced in sequence to ensure that folk songs deal with only the solfege elements that have been introduced already. All solfege elements are practiced with 5 songs, rhythmic elements do not always have 5. Before students play each song, make sure they have been introduced to every concept in the song. I’ve included other musical elements such as repeats, anacrusis, ties, rounds, and time signature changes. Many of these do not happen until the later concepts when the children are more comfortable with the mechanics. In addition to being relatable concepts, this system also relies on widely known folk songs. This is also to help those kids that just need to hear it to play it as a beginner. Students can still practice at home once they have sung the songs in class but this must occur before they bring it home to practice. This method doesn’t deal with moveable do, or key signatures so that students can truly relate the solfege they know to the notes they are playing. Due to Do being fixed at C, low la and low sol do not appear but will be introduced in level 2 of the series when key changes and chromatics are introduced. If you’ve prepped them that do moves with other activities, it won’t be an issue later on if you don’t get to level 2. Also, if you work in district that utilizes fixed do in upper choral classes, they’ll have an advantage! Part of my literacy class involves teaching them the life-long skills of SKIMMING and SCANNING. This handout covers both of these types of reading strategies. It describes what skimming and scanning are, and what the difference between them is. It has a word-bank fill-in-the-blank style questions, and some helpful tips. Also the second page includes a worksheet that ALSO introduces the very important idea of "reading for detail", with true/false examples and multiple choice examples. An answer key is included to help make your life easier. TIP - I get them to look at a menu as the "hook" -I'll bring it up on the whiteboard and ask them to tell me what they want to order within the next 2 minutes. They naturally skim and scan to find their answer :) Then I give this handout and they really get it. ALSO IN MY SHOP! Another worksheet that focuses on skimming through an article about good teachers: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/English-Reading-Skills-Skim-2961049

This is everything you need for your students to either take complete class notes on world religions or complete their own research. It includes a group project that could be completed either with a posterboard or a technological project and the group organization is flexible. I spent about a week teaching the religions and a second week on the project. Table of Contents 1. Title Page 2. Teacher Instructions 3. World Religions Map 4 - 6. World Religions Research/Note-taking Organizers 7. World Religions Review - worksheet, notes quiz, or quiz 8. Posterboard Project - Student Info 9. Technology Project - Student Info 10. Student Preference Sheet 11. Student Handout: Posterboard example 12. Sample Deadlines Schedule 13. - 15. Teacher Group Planning Grids 16. Student Research Handout 17. Suggested Resources 18. Venn Diagram - Two Circles 19. Venn Diagram - Three Circles 20. Student Participation - Evaluation From the teacher information included in the .pdf file: How I Used This Project: Initially we completed a map activity and watched short videos from United Streaming on each religion to complete the charts. We discussed these as a whole group. They completed the worksheets as homework for a grade. I envision that you could use these in that manner or form student “expert” groups to research a single religion and have them report back to their project groups. Going forward, I wanted a simple group project to tie it all together. I chose to complete a poster board project where each group had a theme (prayer, belief, etc.) and the individual group members had a religion. As much as possible, I honored their choices when I created the groups. This could easily be done as a technology project, but in my already technology heavy classroom, I wanted the students to interact with each other face to face when they put it together. They completed their individual work in a word processing program, printed it out and brought it to class to assemble. I also wanted to have them pull it all together so within their groups, after the project was complete, they gave a short oral presentation of their work and paired off in their groups to create a Venn Diagram to compare/contrast their findings. I also included the deadlines schedule that we used in my class; you will want to adapt to meet your own needs. I understand it’s not a true “Jigsaw” project the way I have done it, but it easily could be adapted that way. Information on a Jigsaw cooperative learning can be found at the link below. I also incorporated some ideas from the post “Taking the Struggle Out of Group Work.” I liked the ideas of using the phrasing “team” and to provide participation points and allow each student to “award” those points as contributions warrant. The post is quick, easy read and worth considering. Relevant links are included.
This social skills unit consists of 7 complete lessons. Lesson topics include: appropriate humor, good sportsmanship, handling arguments, making and keeping friends, physical bullying, cyber bullying, and gossip. Lessons will take approximately 2-3 class periods for class durations of 45 minutes. Variables to consider when determining the amount of time to allot for a lesson include the strengths/needs of the group and the level of depth for discussion questions. For each lesson, students will focus on a specific topic and receive explicit instruction, examples, non-examples, group discussion, and at least one engaging activity. Activities vary among lessons in order to teach to multiple learning styles. Engaging activities will foster learning of the skill presented in addition to cooperation and collaboration among peers. Materials needed in addition to basic classroom supplies include glitter and the book, Mr. Peabody’s Apples. If borrowing the book from a local library is not an option, a link to a video reading of the book is provided in this resource. Please keep in mind that using the video link will require internet access. This unit makes a perfect addition to your social skills instruction. The terms of use is included in the document. Listen & Draw is great activity to include with your plans at the beginning of the year when you are teaching class procedures. It helps students practice important listen and follow directions skills. Students will practice positional words and following oral directions with this listening activity.
