This photo was taken near dusk on July 2nd, 2016 in Cold Springs, NY at a tiny pond just a short walk from where I was staying. It was taken with my Canon 5D, 70-200mm lens (135mm), on a tripod, 1/90, f 8. The summer of 2016, I sublet my Miami apartment, packed up my pick up truck with camera equipment, camping gear, paddle board, one small suitcase and my dog and headed out in search of where I wanted to start my life over. Miami was not the place for me. Between the heat, the hurricanes, the traffic and lack of four seasons, after 22 years I had had enough. I had an empty nest for the first time and was finally free to go. But go where? The places I had been and had lived had changed so much during my years in Miami, that I felt I needed to explore, try on different cities, states and communities, in order to make a well informed decision. I meandered for 3 months and 5000 miles through Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and so many more places before resting in the Hudson Valley. All along, the Hudson Valley was calling me. I had spent time exploring before ending up in Miami, and had not forgotten its beauty and charm. After exploring several towns upstate, I had decided to move to Beacon, right near Cold Springs because of its proximity to NYC, its small town charm, and friendly people. In order to actually try it on, I rented a room through AirBnB for a month. I spent time in the town, making new friends and feeling my way around. This pond was up the dirt road from the house I was staying and its where I went almost every day to meditate, take photos and think about the life I wanted and how to create it. Every day that I went to this pond, the light was different, and even though no one was ever there and nothing actually changed, the scene seemed completely different each time - such is nature. This tiny pond gave me much more than just beautiful images. I still visit this place in my head when I meditate sometimes. After leaving Cold Springs, I stopped in Manhattan to visit my daughter before heading back to Miami to pack up my life for the move north. I had sent my portfolio and many inquiries out to companies needing photographers and while there, I got an interview with one. I ended up taking the contract as an independent contractor, and it changed my trajectory. I moved to Manhattan instead of Cold Springs because that was where the work was.
