Cyperus Alternifolius is also know under the common names umbrella papyrus, umbrella sedge or umbrella palm. It is a grass-like plant, native to Madagascar. Cyperus Alternifolius is easily grown and makes an excellent ornamental waterside. It is very well known to be a great houseplant. It will grow long and slender green stems, at the end of which grows a circle of green bracts. This plant requires a wet environment. Umbrella segde enjoys damp and boggy conditions. Hardiness zone: 8-11 Germination Surface sow as soon as possible at about 20°C. Grow in a lightly shaded place. Do not allow the compost to dry out. Germination usually takes place fairly quickly, it can take 3-6 months, maybe more, don't give up. Umbrella Palm Tree Tropical Indoor House Plant Seeds - 15 Rare Seeds Cyperus alternifolius, the umbrella papyrus, umbrella sedge or umbrella palm, is a grass-like plant in the very large genus Cyperus of the sedge family Cyperaceae. The plant is native to West Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula, but widely distributed throughout the world. Under glass grow in loam-based potting compost in bright filtered light. Water freely in summer and maintain high humidity. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Can be grown outdoors as a bog or marginal plant. Propagate by seed at 18 to 21°C in spring in constantly moist seed compost, or anytime if grown inside.
Soggy spots aren't a problem for these perennial plants that like wet soil. Plant them in your dampest spots for added color.
The Umbrella plant is a species of sedge native to Africa and western Asia that is widely planted as an ornamental for its charming, umbrella-like form and its rich green color. This relative of the Egyptian papyrus is grown in gardens and ponds in regions with mild climates and it is also grown as a container plant in cool regions. Also called the Umbrella papyrus. Hardy in zones 9-12. Growing Instructions for the Umbrella Plant Sow on to the surface of moistened seed-sowing compost and cover with the lightest sprinkling of sieved soil. The seeds need darkness to germinate. Cover the seeds and keep them moist. Germination should take place in approximately 10 to 12 days at 20 to 24°C (68 to 75°F). Maintain this temperature until the seedlings are established. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, approximately eight weeks after sowing transplant a small clump of seedlings, around 4 to 6 plants into a 8 to 10 cm pot (3 to 4in) after a further eight weeks transplant into bigger pot, 12 to 13 cm (5 to 6in) to grow on. They will form a bushy plant and be ready to go into the garden in summer. Grow on at 14 to 25°C (57 to 77°F).
