Over the years, I’ve amassed quite the collection of clothes in need of mending. In a box under our bed, there are broken zips, worn out elbows and holes galore. I’d always hoped that I would have time to mend the things that we loved, but finding the time has been so hard. Well, this year I decided I would commit to fixing some of those clothes, as part of our effort to buy less and live more sustainably.
As a striking exhibition at the New York Historical Society makes clear, the sculptor Elie Nadelman and his wife Viola were among the first serious collectors of American folk art and among the first to use the Germanic notion of a national “Volk” to confer prestige on such objects. Unlike their nativist counterparts, who amassed Americana in an effort to bolster nationalist claims to a distinctive artistic tradition, the cosmopolitan Nadelmans acquired both European and American objects to demonstrate the “derivation” of American folk art from European prototypes.

One of Susanne Bisovsky's designs One of the absolute highlights of my trip to Vienna and Munich was getting to visit designer Susanne Bisovsky's studio. You know when you meet someone and you think, "When I grow up, I want to be just like her!"? That was my experience of meeting Susanne. You need to make an appointment to visit the studio, and it is absolutely worth it. Not only did I get to see all of Susanne's beautiful designs, but also the space she inhabits to both work and live. This is noteworthy because, of anyone I've met, she has an aesthetic that permeates everything she does. Every corner of her space is beautiful and filled with lovely things. This is a little nook in her kitchen, for instance! I was initially interested in Susanne's work because she designs dirndls, but they're really a small part of what she does. Her ready-to-wear line is much larger, and is just stunning. Susanne designs all the fabrics and has them printed exclusively. Every piece I looked at was more beautiful than the last. I also learned that she designs dirndls for Sportalm, which might explain why I like them so much. Her studio is filled has sky-high ceilings, gorgeous fabrics, and crinolines hanging from the ceilings. I was delighted when Susanne dressed me up like a doll. Look at that beautiful handmade Frida-Kahlo-inspired headpiece! She showed me some tricks for wearing headscarves and hats. I was totally in heaven. I bought the skirt as a souvenir and Susanne packed my bag with little gifts like a pair of these beautiful socks. I think I've met someone who loves roses as much as I do! How could I not love someone who collects vintage yarn poodles at flea markets? Here are a few more photos of Susanne's designs. As you can see, she's inspired by vintage florals, traditional embroidery, and layered textures and prints. A big thank you to Susanne for such a hospitable welcome and dreamy visit!

In the late 19th century, the art world witnessed a significant cultural exchange between the East and the West, particularly through the introduction of Japanese art into Western markets. This era, marked by the influx of Japanese goods such as kimonos, fans, and woodblock prints, greatly influenced Western artists, including Vincent van Gogh. His fascination with Japanese art was not just a passing interest; it became a pivotal aspect of his artistic journey. Van Gogh's collection of Japanese woodblock prints, acquired mainly in Paris, played a crucial role in shaping his artistic style. These prints, known for their vibrant colors and distinct lines, contrasted sharply with traditional European art and inspired van Gogh to experiment with new techniques and styles. Van Gogh's encounter with Japanese art led to a notable evolution in his work. He began to incorporate elements of Japanese aesthetics, such as the use of bold, unblended colors and simple, unembellished backgrounds. This was a stark departure from his earlier works and demonstrated his admiration for the clarity and deliberate nature of Japanese artwork. His time in Paris, a hub for Japanese art, allowed him to immerse himself in Japonism, the European fascination with Japanese culture and art. Frequenting shops like Siegfried Bing's "L'Art Nouveau," van Gogh absorbed the nuances of Japanese art, which profoundly influenced his artistic expression. Portraiture remained a constant in van Gogh's repertoire, evolving over time but always aiming to capture the essence of his subjects. "La Berceuse (Augustine Roulin)" from 1889 is a prime example of his mastery in this genre, where he skillfully portrayed character and emotion. This commitment to portraiture was further exemplified in "La Mousmé," a painting inspired by Pierre Loti's novel "Madame Chrysanthème." Instead of depicting a Japanese girl, as the novel might suggest, van Gogh chose a young girl from Arles, blending his love for Provence with his fascination for Japan. This painting stands as a testament to van Gogh's ability to intertwine different cultural influences, creating a unique fusion of styles. "La Mousmé" is not merely a portrait but a vibrant display of color and pattern, reflecting van Gogh's ability to harmonize these elements into a visually captivating composition. The young Provençal girl in the painting, adorned in a striped shirt and polka-dotted skirt, symbolizes the fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. The bright red ribbon in her hair and the blooming white oleander she holds add layers of symbolism, typical of Japanese art. The painting's simplistic background, drawing inspiration from the minimalist nature of Japanese woodblock prints, focuses the viewer's attention on the subject and her vivid attire. Through "La Mousmé," van Gogh not only pays homage to Japanese art but also showcases his skill in integrating its principles into his distinctive style, making it a significant piece in his oeuvre and a highlight of the Japonisme movement.
