An elegant lace yoke makes a simple tee look much more complex than it really is. This tee is very easy to custom fit, thanks to the plain stockinette body. As long as your stitch count is the same as one of the sizes when you make it up to the yoke, you can adjust anything in the body very easily. What do you need to know to knit this? You need to know how to work in the round, knit and purl, k2tog, k3tog, p2tog, yarn over, ssk, s2tog-k1-p2sso, and graft (or some other kind of seam to be used where the sleeve joins the body at the underarm). Nupps are optional and can be left out, or replaced with beads. It is up to you This Tee was originally knit in Knit Picks Hawthorne yarn. Almost any smooth sock yarn will be a suitable replacement.

I love visiting Copenhagen. I lived there during my twenties - my formative years in many ways - and so many of my good friends live there. Paradoxically I didn't know Signe Strømgaard when I actually lived in Copenhagen, yet whenever I visit we make sure we get to hang out. I finished a new knit last week all in the name of good, old-fashioned swapping. This squishy goodness was knit for my knitting-group friend Joanna. She is the knitting group's resident needle crafter, hand-stitching designs on paper to create some really awesome greeting and holiday cards. So of course when she asked if anyone in the group would be willing to exchange some hand knits for cards, I jumped at the chance. Literally. I shouted, "ME!" Her request was a nice slouchy hat to go with her black leather jacket (she's so cool). I was a little worried because Joanna has a smaller head circumference than I do so I was going to have to pray to the knitting gauge gods and hope things turned out alright. Thanks to all the garter stitch in this pattern, the brim is super stretchy and not only does it fit her little noggin well, it actually fits mine pretty good too (because you know I tried it on before I gave it away). Since the pattern calls for a DK weight yarn and we had decided on the Polar Morn colorway of Malabrigo worsted, I cast on fewer stitches on a slightly larger needle than called for. After the brim, I knit the hat the length called for (9") before starting decreases. I had more than enough yarn, with a tiny ball leftover. Because of the in-the-round garter stitch, there is a jog where you switch from knit to purl but I actually don't mind it. It looks more like a seam to me than a messy switch so I didn't freak out about it. I gave the hat to Joanna at knitting last night and was happy to get a couple quick photos of her wearing it. I know I say this a lot but I definitely need one for myself! I have a couple great skeins of DK in my stash that I think would make an awesome hat. Or I might have to break down and buy a skein of Malabrigo. How terrible would that be? It comes in beautiful shades of blue, sometimes white or purple, and it looks so fragile and strong at the same time. When creating this new lace pattern the Nigella flower immediately came to my mind. The rounded yoke of the cardigan looks like lots of Nigella flowers spread out like a carpet:) Construction The cardigan is worked top down and without seams, allowing for desired length of body and sleeves. You start from a narrow ribbed edge, followed by the rounded yoke in the Nigella lace pattern. Thereafter the upper body is shaped by a short row section in order to make the fronts neckline lower than the neckline of the back. The upper body is continued with raglan increases. Work is divided for body and sleeves. The lower body is worked flat in stockinette sts followed by a short hem in lace-pattern. The sleeves are worked in the round in stockinette followed by lace-patterned cuffs. Sts are picked up for button bands. Sizes 6mo / 9mo / 12mo / 18mo-2years / 2-3years / 4-5years. Finished chest measurements are: 47/51/53.5/56.5/61/66cm = 18.5/20/21/22.25/24/26” . Keep in mind that the reference to age is approximate. For best results I recommend that you measure a favorite garment that fits well before choosing which size to work. Materials Yarn: I used Rosy Green Wool ”Merino d’Arles” to work the sample. This yarn is an organic merino of fingering weight that comes in skeins of 50gr/1.76oz and 200m/218yards. You will need 2/2/2/3/3/3 skeins of this specific yarn. Yardage might vary from one knitter to another. Needles: a circular needle, size 2.5mm/US1.5 to work the upper and lower body. A set of dpns (or a circular needle, if working the magic loop) for the sleeves. Read more under gauge. Notions: removable stitch-markers, separate holders, scrap yarn and a crochet hook (if you want to work the underarm sts from a provisional cast-on), 6 buttons, 1cm/0.4” across. Gauge 28 sts and 40 rows in stockinette sts = 10x10cm/4x4”. For best results you need to establish gauge before getting started. I used needle size 2.5mm/US1.5 to obtain gauge. This is a suggestion only. The pattern The Nigella lace pattern is charted as well as written out, row-by-row. All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches. All necessary stitch-counts are given. There is a schematic. Knitting skills Working lace following written instructions and/or chart, Picking up sts. Working in the round. Of all the Nutiden colourways this one must be my favourite so far. It spent more than a year on my shelf before I knew what kind of special garment it should become. Purpurea is no regular cable sweater. With a beautifully accentuated mock (turtle) neck, a well fitting round yoke with a pattern of growing cables and a body with super practical side slits, it is a very modern yet potentially timeless garment. The pullover is knit top-down in the round and split into two halves to be worked flat at the waist line. Side slits are optional and the amount of positive ease can be easily adjusted before the separation of the body and sleeves. Yarn ca. 385 (395, 440, 480, 525) (555, 620, 645, 700) g of Nutiden yarn from Honer Och Eir, 100% Swedish wool with approx. 500 m (546 yds) per 100 g plate, held double, shown in colourway Oxalis; or an estimated yardage of 963 (988, 1100, 1200, 1313) (1388, 1550, 1613, 1750) m // 1051 (1078, 1201, 1310, 1433) (1515, 1693, 1761, 1911) yds of any other worsted/light aran weight yarn with a matching gauge for a cropped version. Make sure you have enough extra yarn if you want to make a longer version. My sample is worked with 2 strands of unspun yarn (Nutiden) held together. It did turn out quite bulky, giving me a sort of Teddy Bear feeling. Some of the Nutiden colors are more gentle/light, others are more sturdy/heavy. Oxalis was on the heavier side. So if you have a heavier unspun yarn (that also includes Plotulopi) and want a lighter version with more drape, think about using 1 strand of that yarn held together with a strand of lace/light fingering weight yarn to get the gauge. Needles and notions 3.0 mm (US 2.5), 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles; spare cables, spare circular needles or scrap yarn to keep stitches on hold; a few stitch markers; a 4.0 mm (US 6) cable needle (optional); a tapestry needle or a crochet hook to weave in the ends and for bind-off. Gauge 16 sts & 24 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) measured over stockinette stitch worked in the round on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles after blocking; 20 sts & 24 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) measured over cable pattern of the body worked in the round on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles after blocking. Adjust the needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. GAUGE: 24 sts , 32-33 rows in stockinette = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4”. ABOUT THE DESIGN: The Herringbone top is a roomy lightly A-shaped summer blouse with generous elbove length sleeves. The body and sleeves are worked bottom up in the round and gathered in the round yoke featuring a graphical textured pattern, below which short row shaping raises the back for optimal fit.
