Yesterday was the first session in my after school Medieval Art Class! What a blast! I have a great group of kids and a nice mix of boys and girls! Aren't these fabulous?! We did a variation on a project I saw in the book, "Medieval Projects You Can Do" by Marsha Groves. The image is pretty much the one Groves uses, but I used the Contact paper technique that I've developed with my students over the last couple years. I showed the children pictures of stained glass from medieval times, making sure that I had examples of traditional stained glass (tall and rectangular), some details showing the brushed-on enamel details, and an example of a rose window with its circular design. I then provided them with a guide that had the dragon image on it with all of the sections labeled so the children would know what was fire, what was dragon and what was background (sometimes that gets confusing). Using a template like this is actually very traditional. In medieval times artisans would sketch the designs for windows onto wooden panels and the artisans would fabricate the windows on top of the wooden templates. The end results of this project were gorgeous! It is funny how different the pieces can be even thought they are all the same subject. One bit of warning, using tissue paper squares with children can be, um...tricky. This group wasn't bad at all: I had the tissue paper squares in a tray in the center of each table and I warned that crazy movements can cause the squares can fly up and get on other people's work (not cool!). Once the tissue paper is on the Contact paper, it cannot be removed, so the children need to be mindful of their neighbors' pieces and move slowly and carefully. I do hope you try this project, it really is a cool one! Here's the method: Dragon (Faux) Stained Glass Supplies Needed: Template (I copied mine on 8 1/2" x 11" paper) Pencils, Ruler & Sharpie to create your template Piece of clear Contact paper slightly larger than your paper guide Clear tape Four 3/4" x 12" strips black construction paper "(for frame) About four 1/4" x 12" strips black construction paper "(for leading) Many 1" squares of tissue paper, assorted colors Scissors 1 clear sheet protector, optional Directions: 1. Make your template: Draw a border around the copy paper that is about 1/2" wide. Use the pencil & ruler to create a simple, bold image made up of straight lines. Don't make anything too detailed! You can use the dragon image for inspiration. Once you have your design down, use the Sharpie to go over the lines. These will be the guide lines you will use when placing your construction paper leading. You may want younger children to work from a template image you've created, but older children could create their own over a period of classes. 2. Tape the template to the table using clear tape. 3. Remove the paper backing from the Contact paper and place it on top of the template sticky side up. You will be doing all of the work on the sticky side of the Contact paper. Tape the Contact paper to the table using a couple pieces of clear tape to hold it in place while you work. 4. Place the 3/4" pieces of black construction paper over the areas of the template designated as your border. Place the paper strips directly onto the sticky side of the Contact paper and press lightly. It is OK if the strips extend beyond your template--you'll be trimming the piece later. 5. Using your template as a guide, place the 1/4" strips of construction paper over the leading lines on the image you drew. Simply rip (or cut) the construction paper strips to the proper length to cover your leading lines. Cover all of the lines in your drawing. 6. Once you have the border and all of the leading lines covered in construction paper, start filling in the remaining sections with colorful pieces of tissue paper. The squares can overlap each other and can overlap the black construction paper lines a bit (you are actually working on the piece from behind). But take care to make sure the tissue paper goes where you want it to. It is almost impossible to remove the tissue paper from the Contact paper once it gets on there. 7. Once all of the sections are filled in with color, trim the piece down to 8 1/2" x 11" and slip it into a clear sheet protector to protect it. Other options would be to use another sheet of Contact paper on the other side of the piece to seal the tissue paper and construction paper safely inside. Or you could run the piece through a laminator (maybe), I don't have one at my disposal, so I'm not sure of that, but it may work. Place in a sunny window and enjoy! Working on our dragon (faux) stained glass windows. Everything is taped down with clear tape and the tissue paper squares are in the center of the table in cardboard trays.

Peeeeeeeps! I'm falling apart over here...okay, not really - right now I'm sipping coffee, blog stalking and praying my oldest who is on DAY THREE of being sick is all better tomorrow because he HAS to be - that's when hubster goes in for his surgery. Yesterday was like any other day...it moved along at hyper speed, like it always does and then I called Grandma to see how my sick boy was doing and she uttered the words I REALLY didn't want to hear, "Not good, hasn't eaten all day"... Of course I'm sad he's sick, of course I want him to be better, of course when he hurts I hurt... BUT.... "Not good, hasn't eaten all day" = another day of sub plans. I already knew I was going to stay late to plan for the two days I'm going to be out for hubby's surgery - tack another day onto that = not getting home until 8:00 PM!!! Oy. I'm so lucky to have a retired teacher as my sub. I taught with her for years. She's awesome. She rocks it out like no other. She knows the kids really well because her granddaughter is in my class. So... Why do I insist on compulsively planning? Seriously, I should have taken a picture of the gloriousness called "organization". I'm really proud of myself this time. I had three bins, color coded {pretty primary colors} and color coded my plans with the same color sticky note tabs {to match the bins}. They really were a work of art. You would have been impressed. Necessary? Probably not. Then, I had to organize my room. I had to tidy up. I had to make it look all pretty for my Guest {Guest Teacher}. Why do I do this? Anyhoo - I hope she sneezes on cue...cuz Lord knows I probably put that in my plans. Christina, over at Mrs. Bainbridge's Class {Click Here} is hosting an "unofficial linky party". She posted a picture of her lesson plans and others have done it too. I thought I'd put mine up for you to peruse. I'm surprised by how detailed some of the documents are that I've seen. I think I must be pretty bare bones when it comes to this. I'm with Christina, in that I like to pencil in more details, I guess I'm still holding on to a piece of "old school". Here are mine: Click on picture to download PDF - you'll be able to see it better! I print them back-to-back, three hole punch, and put in a binder. Where you see multiple subjects: i.e. word wall, word study, handwriting or social studies/science - I circle or highlight what I'm working on for that day and pencil in some small details - maybe a page number or a short phrase describing the lesson. In the small boxes next to the subject I will pencil in more info if necessary, or put the page number{s} there. With all the changes in legislation and the "threat" of my current principal soon retiring {I'm trying to stop that from happening} I'm guessing my lesson plans may have to change and include something about the Common Core {which Michigan has adopted and our district is fast and furiously implementing}...until then, they'll stay nice and streamlined... Hope you all had a good day at school..I'm now going to try to squeeze a little school work out of my sick boy. Ladies and Gentleman... we officially have the first week down in the books!! And what an AMAZING week it was!! #BestFirstWeekEver!! My kiddos are just awesome. We learned a lot and laughed a lot! My own children also had a great week (aside from a quick bout of a stomach bug that kept one home for a day!). My oldest, Drew, started 1st grade. My middle, Quinn, started Kindergarten. And my toddler twins, Addy and Chase, began two-mornings-a-week preschool. Additionally, Mr. Musings from the Middle School (my husband Dennis), started a new school year, too! Phew!! My head is spinning! Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend and recovering from this busy time of year. This post is mainly a pictorial of some of the goings on in my classroom this week. As we settle into our routine, I'll be back with more "meaty" posts (and hopefully some new videos, too!). One of my favorite activities from the week was this Growth Mindset lesson that I adapted from here. Basically, the kids had to create the image on top using just a piece of paper and scissors. It was NOT easy... but that's exactly the point! As the kids worked, I wrote down some of the comments I heard. Things like, "this is impossible," and "I give up!" After I let them struggle for a while, I brought them back together and discussed the activity with them. It was eye-opening to see their words. They all agreed that their attitude was too negative so of course they would never have been successful. Then we read the Growth Mindset posters hanging in our room and discussed what each one meant. I closed with this video from Khan Academy. It was a fun and powerful lesson. One of the BEST purchases I made from TpT for this school year is the Icebreakers that Rock bundle from Cult of Pedagogy. This product contains three PowerPoint activities that allow students to talk to each other in an easy, comfortable way. What is great about these is that you can use them as one, big activity, or you can break them up, showing just a few slides here and there, as "brain breaks" through out the day. That is how I used them. So, on the first day, I did a big "Find Someone Who" activity with them. This allowed all the kids to learn each other's names. Next, I assigned them all their lockers and we practiced opening the combination locks (super-stressful for these first time locker users)! After that, we did a few slides from Icebreakers that Rock. Then, we went over the syllabus. Next, a few more Icebreakers that Rock slides. After that, I handed out and went over all the paperwork that had to go home and be signed (oh, the paperwork!!!). Then, a few more slides right before lunch. And then a few more right after lunch. Next up, a tour of the building. Then a few more slides before trying our lockers again. Finally, another slide right before dismissal. It was the perfect break/filler/attention-getter/distraction to use throughout the day... actually, I used the slides throughout the whole week! Run to TpT and pick this product up today! Totally worth every penny. (Some of the slides can be done silently. I LOVED these slides!!) Of course, we had to number our notebooks to get ready for ELA next week. I always tell kids that this is the easiest, most difficult task that we do all year :) I really the love smell of a Mr. Sketch anchor poster in the morning! This year, I'm starting with Reading Nonfiction: Notice and Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies. My thinking is that it will really help with getting started with Article of the Week. Here is one of several of the posters I'll be using to teach these strategies. I'm jumping on the #ObserveMe bandwagon! Read more about it here.
