Today's recipe for Fried Christmas Pudding with Destiny Sauce is a fabulous way to use up any leftover Christmas Pudding that is languishing in the pantry or larder. This recipe was regularly made by my grandmother and my mum, and laterally by myself. The original recipe was in The Readers Digest Cookery Year, and having researched the recipe further, I discovered that it’s a Victorian recipe for leftover Christmas pudding, usually eaten on Boxing Day. However, with the sauce being called Destiny Sauce, we’ve always eaten it on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. It’s not really a sauce as such, but an enriched cream with icing sugar and port, although brandy, sherry or Madeira can be used too. Enjoy this if you make it and do let me know! Karen

My recipe for today is Betwixtmas Pie with Christmas Leftovers....this is a fabulous pie to make with any cooked turkey and ham that might be languishing in the back of your fridge after Christmas Day. It's made with cooked meat, cranberries, chestnuts and stuffing, and with ready-made and ready-rolled pastry. But in truth, you could make this pie at any time of the year, using Sunday Roast leftover, or Easter and Thanksgiving leftovers too. My recipe is really just an idea of how to assemble the pie, and there are lots of ideas for substitutions and my mum's recipe for Shortcrust Pastry, if you don't have any ready-made to hand. I love to use all of the pastry scraps and cut them into flowers and leaves, to adorn to pie. You can use templates for this too, and it's a great way to make sure there is absolutely NO waste at all when using up the leftovers. Enjoy this pie served with mashed potatoes, steamed greens, gravy and cranberry sauce. Or, serve it cold with pickles, chutney and salad. It's a very versatile pie.

I have several Christmas Pudding recipes on Lavender & Lovage, but today's recipe for 1930's Special Christmas Pudding is, as the title says, very special. It's taken from a Sainsbury's leaflet from the 1930's, which was published for Stir up Sunday at the time. I have halved the original recipe, as it made two large puddings, which even as pudding lovers, would be too much for us! The recipe yields a 2lb (900g) light, fruity and boozy pudding, with added almonds and an apple, which adds to the fruitiness of this tempting pud. If you make it now, or on Stir up Sunday, which is on the 26th November this year (2023), it will have matured nicely just in time for Christmas day. I made one more substitution, I used butter in place of suet, as we prefer the richness of butter to to suet. I used my Ninja Foodi 14-in-1 multi-cooker to cook this pudding, using the pressure cooker setting. Once cooked, store the pudding, ideally, in a dark, cool place, such as the larder or the pantry. On Christmas Day, you can reheat it in the microwave, or by steaming for 1 hour in a multi-cooker or in a steamer. Serve it with white sauce, rum or brandy sauce, brandy butter, cream or custard.....it's delicious when served with any of those options.
The first Advent calendars were used by German Lutherans in the 19th century as a way to anticipate the days leading up to Christmas. Advent calendars come in many forms. This particular calendar takes the form of a winter village. At the beginning of the Christmas season, treats are placed in each of the houses. Then once per day, according to the date on the roof, a house is opened to reveal the prize inside. Photo instructions on how to make your own custom Advent village may be found here.
