Cleveland delivers a Diva like performance in this exquisite editorial made to mimic the many colors of the operatic institution. Aldridge brings the demands of this melodramatic story into the constraint of the common editorial. Creating an arch of imagery we get the sense we are watching an opera mid aria. - Anna Cleveland as opera singer in “Like a Diva!” for Vogue Italia, March 2017. Photograph by Miles Aldridge.
Mihály Munkácsy (Hungarian, 1844-1900) - Woman Reading (Oil on paper. Magyar Nemzeti Galéria - Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest) - - In 1867 Munkácsy travelled to Paris to see the Universal Exposition. Paul Colin (French, 1892-1985) - Lucienne Radisse, c.1930 (Poster. Lithograph in colours. Printed by Joseph-Charles, Paris) - - Virtuoso cellist and movie star, Lucienne Radisse enjoyed hours of glory mainly during the first half of 20th century: Pablo Casals said of her that “we never know what is the greatest pleasure, to hear her transform her instrument into an almost celestial lyre, or simply to look at her, anyway, we are charmed by the incomparable artist as well as by the gracious woman, so the joy is total.”
Alfred Provis (British, 1843-1886) - Interior, Girl Reading, 1875 (Oil on panel. Ferens Art Gallery) - Provis specialised in small, detailed interiors of cottages and farmhouses, with women and children performing household chores or, in this work, reading. His pictures are usually small and predominantly brown in colour. Provis’s palette of luminous browns abandons the ‘principal’ for a less, narrow solution of light and a freer analysis, drawing the viewer’s eye all around the whole of his canvas.
