The popcorn activity for sorting words containing the final /k/ spelling pattern was such a hit I decided to create an ice cream cone version to add a little variety. Sorting activities are a perfect way to introduce many of our spelling rules as students can see right away how the rule applies. Just as a […]

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned in THIS post how I would be taking a giant step forward in “stepping up” my sight word instruction this upcoming year. Not that I need to “teach” sight words any differently, but offer continuous and hands on ways for my kiddos to practice them. Another area I will be offering […]

Spring is definitely my favorite time of year to teach Science! There are just so many hands-on concepts that are so interesting to the students. Plants, of course, is always so interesting because they are something the kids can see all around them and they all have some kind of experience with. First up, here are some of our centers we have going on during our study of plants. This first one is the same green mat as the one below, just with different sorting objects. This is our Spring Sensory Tub. So far, it contains flowers, pots, rubber bugs, and bug cards that the students can match with the rubber bugs. This seed matching center is one of my favorite Science centers. Each large card contains an empty seed packet and some seeds. The students find the small card with the same seeds and matches it to the large card. One of the student's favorite activities was going on a nature hunt and then using what they found to create their own nature collages. And of course, no study on plants would be complete without planting our own beans! We planted pinto and lima. (The clear cups make it easy to see how the roots grow!) Want to completely amaze your Kinders?! Just change white carnations into colored carnations with food coloring and water! At the end of our unit on plants, I split the students into five groups and they made posters to present to the class about what they learned. Watching them work together and figure it all out on their own is always my favorite part of group projects. I wrote the title for each group on a piece of paper, but the students did all the planning, writing and drawing on their own. "How to Plant a Seed" "Plant Needs" "What We Know About Plants" "Types of Plants" "Parts of a Plant" Update: I have created a Living & Nonliving Mini Unit to continue our study of living and nonliving things. You can see it on Teachers Pay Teachers, here. Or you can read about it on my newest blog post, here.
I've been having a hard time lately with some of the older kids I see. They don't see the point or the importance of what we are working on. I have been very frustrated, and our sessions have been less than productive. In desperation, I turned to Pinterest, and came across some UNO activities. I figured - what could it hurt? We aren't getting anything done anyway! Well, it was no less than MAGICAL!!! My most difficult student didn't want to come see me, but I asked him to give me just 10 min. We played the game, and he was happy about it. I started to pick up the cards, and he grabbed the UNO cards and starting dealing out the cards. We ended working for 30 minutes with smiles all around. Below is the activity I did today. Click on the picture for activity details. After the session, my mind was buzzing. Although the student did well, and shared, he didn't really listen to my comments. So I came up with this idea. This student needs to work on writing, so I made a handout so that he has to write down the other participant's comments. Click on the picture for activity details. There is just something about UNO that everyone loves. Here is another great idea showing how to use UNO cards in a session. Click on the picture for activity details. Thank you Pinterest for such great ideas and breaking my therapy block with my older students. I look forward to coming up with some more ideas. I'll let you know how it goes.
Our principal has really been encouraging us to add more writing into our daily lesson plans. "They should be writing all day long" he tells us. The research is there to back him up. I bumped into this Roll and Retell page from Fun In First on Pinterest awhile back and finally figured out how to add it to our learning day. I printed and laminated four copies of the Roll and Retell page to hand out to each of my four table groups. After a round of Daily 5 I handed them out. I also gave each table one die. Each student at the table took turns rolling the die and then answering the question based on the number they rolled. They each used the individual book they were reading to answer the questions. I felt like it would be a great advertisement for new books for each child to read when they were done with the one they were working on. I also knew it would be great oral practice BEFORE they started writing. Once they had a chance to talk about what they were going to write, I set the timer for 5 minutes and let them write. Then we shared our responses. Here are a few of their responses. I had so much success with this activity with my students, that I created versions that cover the standards for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. There are 6 different Roll and Respond Sheets that cover all of the Second Grade ELA Common Core Standards for both literary and informational text. There are 5 different Roll and Respond Sheets that cover all of the Third Grade ELA Common Core Standards for both literary and informational text. There are 7 different Roll and Respond Sheets that cover all of the Fourth Grade ELA Common Core Standards for both literary and informational text. Hello darlings! Amy here from That Teaching Spark! When I teach spelling, I am often on the hunt for fun, yet practical activities for my students to practice their spelling pattern for the week. This year, I am meeting with my students in small groups to work on differentiated spelling lists. One of my rotations is called Choice. This is where students get the “Choice” of the activity they would like to complete. They are allowed to choose from a list of activities on their Choice Board. We glue these boards onto the inside cover of our Word Study Journals so students have them all year. (Freebie at the end of post!) At the beginning of the year, I introduce each activity choice and have students practice it. That way when rotations come along, I have a well oiled machine with students working independently. While I completely agree that activities such as these are NOT effective in long term application of spelling words, research shows that adding kinesthetic activities helps with memorization. I teach the understanding and the word pattern “rules” during my Teacher Rotation. A few Favorites…. I created the Michelangelo Spelling activity after our art teacher did a project with my kiddos about the Sistine Chapel. My kiddos LOVE taping their paper to the underside of their desks and “painting” like Michelangelo. Of course, they are just writing their spelling words, but it is incredibly motivating. My kiddos also love Ghost Spelling. They write their words on paper with a white crayon and then color over the crayon with a marker. It “magically” shows up. Another favorite of mine is Context Clues. Students must write a sentence with the word that is so detailed, that another student could figure out the word if the word was covered up. I use the little sticky flags for this activity. I wanted to give this Choice Board to you FREE!
