Hi everyone! I apologize for my long absence this month. My daughter got married on the 19th and life has been a little crazy. The wedding was amazing - I have a fun project and lots of pictures to share with you tomorrow! Today, I thought it would be nice to create something patriotic to honor those who've served in the military. Having a son who is currently in the Air Force, and lots of friends and family who have served, I know firsthand the sacrifices military men and women make, plus the toll it takes on their families. I am so very proud of and thankful for our military! When thinking about what type of card to make, I immediately thought of Karen Burniston's Accordion 3D die. I love using it as a base for all of my favorite dies and stamps from Tim Holtz. While I was working on this today, I took a few pics along the way to show you how I made it. I hope you're inspired to make one yourself! Begin by cutting four panels from kraft cardstock, using the Accordion 3D die. Cut four panels from Tim Holtz' Seasonal Paper using the companion Bracket Frames and Label die. Using the same die, cut three labels from blue Core'dinations paper. Emboss with the Americana Texture Fade and sand lightly. Next, cut three small stars from chipboard using Tim's Star Bright die. Trim off the tabs on each star and fold along the score lines. Coat the stars with Ranger's Glue 'n Seal and cover with silver Stickles dry glitter. Let dry. (BTW, how pretty is that glitter?! I absolutely adore that stuff!) Cut the letters 'USA' from kraft cardstock and red kraft Core'dinations using the new Sizzix Block Talk alpha die. Adhere to each other, offsetting the red letter slightly to the right. Use a foam square to adhere the star to the embossed label. Glue the letters onto the stars using a heavy, quick-setting glue like Beacon's 3-in-1. Adhere Seasonal Chitchat stickers to a scrap of blue Core'dinations and trim as shown. Apply Glossy Accents and let dry. To decorate the front, emboss a piece of red kraft Core'dinations with the Stripes Texture Fade. Adhere to the front of the first panel. Stamp the Statue of Liberty onto a label cut from white cardstock with Jet Black archival ink. Ink edges and layer to center panel. Adhere the Chit Chat stickers to the front as shown. Cut three stars using the Mini Old Glory star die and attach to the bottom of the center panel with Idea-ology Tiny Fasteners. Decorate each panel with the coordinating patriotic paper and adhere the panels together. Glue the decorative center panels as shown. Edit 7/4/16: The Karen Burniston Sizzix dies I used have been discontinued. She has a very similar version that is available at Elizabeth Crafts Designs now. The method will be slightly different from the tutorial, but enough is similar that you should be able to recreate the card with no problem! Tutorial time! Today I am sharing a step-by-step tutorial using Karen Burniston's Sizzix Accordion Flip 3-D Album die, as well as a lot of other dies and as always some fun techniques. This die is fabulous and there are so many possibilities, you can make an accordion card, a mini-book, or even attach it to a scrapbooking page. It is a Bigz die, so it is not large, but you can make a pretty large project with it. I did a Four Seasons accordion booklet with four pages, you can add as many pages as you need. Here's the outside when the mini-book is folded up. I used some of my favourite quotes about nature and built a little seasonal scene on each page, using ink, stamping, shrink plastic and paper. Here's how I made this: The Bracket Frame die coordinates perfectly with the Accordion Flip Album die, both the inside label and the outer frame. This is a very useful die, it cuts a fabulous label and two different frames. I used all the parts on this card. Die cut as many pages as you need from watercolour paper (or another cardstock that can handle water, such as manila). Since Distress Inks are reactive with water, they work perfect for watercolour techniques. Smear two shades of blue on a craft sheet and mist lightly with water. Use a paint brush and apply an even layer of clean water where you want your sky to be. I took this photo at an angle, so you can see how wet the paper is. The water helps the ink to move around and blend nicely. Start from the top with the darker shade of blue and start dropping ink in, continue with the lighter blue and leave some areas the white of the paper. Quickly drop in a little bit of the darker blue to create cloud shadows. Leave to dry. Don't fiddle around too much with the ink, you usually get a better result by working quickly, before the water dries, and then let it dry. Continue in the same way with the other four labels. I used Salty Ocean and Tumbled Glass on all the skies, by altering the amount of water, you can get many values of blue from one ink. My spring and summer skies are bluer than the autumn and the even paler winter sky. After the skies are completely dry, use the same techniques on the grass/snow. This time, start by painting clean water only on the grass area, one at a time, and then drop in two shades of green. I used Shabby Shutters and Mowed Lawn for the spring and summer grass, Peeled Paint and Forest Moss for autumn and Iced Spruce and Pumice Stone for the winter snow. Leave to dry, or dry with a heat gun. To add some texture, I used background stamps and stamped with the same colours Distress Inks, holding the stamp in my hand for a random impression. The spring scene was stamped with Shabby Shutters and the summer scene with Mowed Lawn and an alphabet stamp (below the spring scene on the photo) and with birds using Stormy Sky. The autumn grass was stamped with Forest Moss and the snow with Iced Spruce and a dotty texture stamp. Die cut the Accordion Flip album four times from white cardstock (only two are shown on the photo). Cut the flaps off the first page since you don't need them - I forgot to cut the flaps off from the label on the first page shown here. Apply adhesive to the places shown, I used Wonder Tape, but you could use another double-sided tape or glue dots too. Karen shows how to assemble the album in this video. Attach the pages as shown in the photo, and continue with the rest of the pages in the same manner. Here you can see all the four pages attached together. I adhered the four labels on top. If you want to you can decorate them first. Don't attach the flaps on the labels yet, that will make decorating difficult. Die cut two frames from kraft resist paper using the Bracket Frame die. Attach them to the front and the back of the accordion book using double-sided tape. Here you can see the front of the book. The Accordion Flip die both cuts and scores the pages, but you have to help the score lines along a bit when you fold up the book. Now to decorating the pages. Since I wanted to create little seasonal scenes, I need small embellishments, and one of my favourite ways of creating them is to use shrink plastic. You can see how much the pieces shrink if you look at the large cloud on the photo, which is still the original size. Die cut the Tree & Heart, clouds from the Kites Framelits set, and Birds on a Wire (which might need a bit of help with scissors) from shrink plastic. Stamp some of them. I used a swirl stamp and Olive Stazon ink on the tree, a text stamp on the birds and an alphabet stamp on two of the clouds with Jet Black Stazon. Shrink according to the instructions on the package. I decided that I needed more shrink plastic pieces, and cut a Mini Bird, Mini Tattered Leaves and a Mini Butterfly. The leaves were stamped with a texture stamp and Olive Stazon ink and the butterfly with a dot stamp and Pumpkin Orange. Color all the shrink plastic pieces at the back with alcohol inks. I used Stonewashed and Lettuce on the birds and coloured the wire with a black permanent pen. The leaves were coloured with Sunset Orange and Meadow, the tree crown with Meadow, Lettuce and Pesto, the trunk with Meadow and Espresso, the heart with Red Pepper, the little bird with Stonewashed and the butterfly with Sunshine Yellow. The clouds were painted with white paint at the back, to create a fluffy look. Let the alcohol ink dry, then paint the back (where the alcohol ink was applied) with white paint. This gives a more opaque look to the pieces. As you can see, the paint picks up the colour of the ink a bit, but that doesn't matter. To give a more finished and rounded look to shrink plastic pieces, I like to apply a layer of Glossy Accents on top. Do this on all the pieces and put aside to dry. I had to break off a little piece at the bottom of the trunk of the tree, so that the tree would fit on the label. The trunk was placed into the wet glossy accents on the crown. You might see the glossy accents on the birds better on this photo. I wanted some parts of the scenes to be paper, for a variety of materials. The tree from Halloween Shadows was die cut twice from green and brown Core'dinations ColorCore cardstock (there are three trees on the photo, but I didn't use one them). This is a Halloween die, but many of the shapes on it work great for lots of other themes too. I also cut the fence from white cardstock and the little owl from brown Core'dinations. The Mini Pine was cut from Kraft-Core Core'dinations. All the Core'dinations pieces were sanded a bit and white paint was dry-brushed on the branches of the pine tree. I wanted to repeat the label shape, and die cut it from shrink plastic. Punch a hole at the top (remember that the hole shrinks too). A sentiment was stamped on top with Jet Black Stazon, before shrinking. Here you can see how much it shrinks. Coat the label with Glossy Accents and leave to dry. I pierced a hole in the frame and used a jump ring to attach the label. Time to assemble the scenes. I used four shades of blue ColorCore cardstock to die cut the names of the seasons, using the Alphabetical Sizzlits die. Sand the letters a bit. Print quotes that you like on ledger paper and cut into strips. The flowers were die cut from white cardstock with the Tattered Flower Garland. Glue all the pieces with Glossy Accents. The summer scene, with the butterfly fluttering over the picket fence. Each of these scenes would work very well as a card too, if you don't want to make the whole accordion booklet. The owl can be glued so that it looks as if it is sitting on a branch of the tree. The leaves are falling down. Finally, the frosty winter scene, with one small little blue bird and one of my favourite quotes. When the labels are decorated, you can finish the assembly, by attaching the flaps on the labels to the label before it. Every second flap is attached in front of the frame, and every second flap behind the frame piece, as you can see of this photo of the finished project. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you so much for the visit! Happy crafting! Finally had the chance to play with my Sizzix Accordion Flip Album die. Totally inspired after spying Helen's amazing card, I knew I had to try one for our Mothers Day cards this year. I always enjoy playing with acetate and had loads of fun putting this together. Love the effect of the butterflies suspended in air, appearing to be flying through the frames of the card. Using the Sizzix Accordion Flip Album die, each panel was cut three times, once from clear acetate, once from patterned paper, and again from cardstock. I snipped off the center pieces from the ones cut from patterned paper and cardstock, leaving just the outer frames and tabs to glue onto the front and back of the acetate panels. I wanted my first panel be flat so I used a 9.5 x 4.75" piece of cardstock folded in half and adhered to the tab of the second panel. Spellbinders Labels One dies were used to cut and frame my sentiment for the front. Then came the fun part of embellishing the acetate panels with the butterflies and swirls. I used Memory Box dies for the larger butterflies and Cheery Lynn dies for the smaller ones. Green leafy swirl border is also a Cheery Lynn die, and the very tiny butterflies on the border are from a Memory Box die. The one problem with acetate is that it doesn't stay folded flat, so keeping the card in a closed position was a little bit of a challenge. To solve this, I made a separate tri-fold wrap with a ribbon closure to keep my card folded inside. Part of the fun is that once the ribbon is untied, the accordion card inside literally springs open! For our Mothers Day family dinner out, I ordered strawberry daifukumochi from Made In Hawaii Foods to share with all the moms. Wanted to put them in a pretty bag, but didn't have much time so it had to be kept simple... Used MTC to create a simple strawberry embellishment for the bags from a line drawing found on the internet. Added a pink satin bow and it was done. Check out the size of these strawberries! These strawberries covered with an (sweet bean paste) and wrapped in soft mochi were worth every yummy penny...been so craving this ever since our trip to Japan a few weeks ago! Got one more surprise project of another RAK from our sweet friend Lorna at work... Cutest little paper teacup ever! Thought she had used a Sizzix die for this, but learned later that this is all Cricut! Will have to talk to Lorna more to find out the deets, but I'm guessing she might have used a cupcake wrapper die? Love, love the cute little paper rose embellishments she added too. Wow, just can't get over all the wonderful paper projects this girl comes up with! Does she ever sleep? Thank you, Lorna!!!

UPDATE! Since a few of the dies I used for this card are no longer available, I've created an updated version using new dies by Karen Burniston. You can find the new version here: http://shellyhickox.blogspot.com/2014/08/glittery-steampunk-pop-it-ups-card.html I am SO excited to finally get to share this project with you all! It's a birthday card I made for my dad using Karen Burniston's Accordion 3D and Bracket and Frames dies, along with all of my favorite dies, Texture Fades, Distress Stains, stamps, and embellishments from Tim Holtz. So much goodness in one card! You can find the full tutorial on the Inspiration Emporium blog HERE. Here is the view when open. The gears appear to be floating, but they're all secured to acetate panels. Such a genius idea! I wish I could take full credit, but it was something that Karen mentioned to me a few weeks ago. Not only is Karen ridiculously talented, she is extremely generous with both her praise and her ideas! I love the look of the measuring tape background on kraft paper. It looks almost like wood! The Clock Key die and the Gears Texture Fade are two of my favorite new products released at the past CHA show. And how cute is that little man stamp? Love him! Here is the other end of the card - the gears were so much fun to play around with. I used Grungeboard, Foil Tape, and the Word Play die to create the numbers. One of my favorite techniques from Tim! Here is another look at the card when open. It's so hard to really see how dimensional it is. I did a super quick video with my phone, just so you could see how it opens and closes: All the supplies I used can be found at Inspiration Emporium via the links below. Hello and welcome to today's Step x Step ! It's Sue here and today I'm sharing my first experiment making an Accordion Card. As the current challenge theme is Any Way you Fold it my thoughts were still on different folds and I've been itching to have a go with this die, so here we go. I started by cutting 4 panels and then blending Wild Honey and Rusty Hinge Distress Inks over both sides. Then I used the gorgeous background stamp from the Wendy Vecchi Heirloom Art set and stamped over all 4 panels using Coffee Archival ink. I cut 4 smaller panels using a Nestability and used more Distress Ink with some of the fabulous Wendy Vecchi's stencils. I love the check pattern you can create using the Yikes Stripes stencil. I then cut some strips of DIY masking tape and painted them using Spiced Marmalade Distress Paint. Using an ordinary pencil with a rubber on the end I dipped it into some brown acrylic paint and dabbed it onto the painted masking tape. I then started to stamp the images for each panel. I used the above stamp from the Artistic Outpost Paris Exposition set and used a smaller Nestability to cut out part of the image. I blended lots of Distress Ink around the edges, which you'll see in a later photo. I used the Movers and Shapers Mini Stamp die and the stamps from the Artistic Outpost Paris Exposition set. I quite liked not having the complete image on the stamps. Again, you'll see in a later photo I used lots of Distress Ink around the edges of the stamps. For one of the panels I've used this beautiful stamp from the Artistic Outpost Flower Market set and I've used Distress Markers and stamped onto watercolour paper. I then used 2 different sizes of flower dies and cut out the stamped image and also cut 2 flowers from brown tissue paper which I then stamped over with some text. I made a smaller flower using the Tim Holtz Tattered Flower strip die. I cut several flowers from an old book page, layered them and then rubbed some Vintage Photo Distress Ink over the edge of the petals. Here are the four finished panels, I also added some ripped pieces from an old book to some of the panels and I've stamped on them with a script stamp. For the 'Joie de Vivre' panel I've used the Artistic Outpost Flower Market and Paris Exposition sets again. I cut the girls face out using the Mini Bottle Cap die and cut the text into separate words. Here's the final card, which was really tricky to photograph ! I've blended more Distress Ink around the edges of the panels to age them. I've taken some close ups of the finished panels so that you can see the details. I stamped some acrylic paint dots on a piece of book page for the background on the above panel. Here you can see the girls face a little better on the bottle cap and also the finished flower. I layered the above image on some more book paper and rubbed some Distress Ink over the edges of the paper flowers. I've added some May Arts crocheted lace to this panel. I hope you've enjoyed today's step x step and you've still got time to show us your different folds ! Sue x
Today's share is a 'Three Panel Accordian Flip Card', made using Karen Burniston's fun die and her Bracket & Frame die. I didn't have the 2nd die for the first couple of Accordian Flip cards I made, but it really does make cutting the decorative panels easier and I'm glad I was able to add it to my die collection. Here is the card closed ... I used bright and cheerful paper from my stash and a bunch of different dies & punches. The patterned paper is embossed and sparkly too! The smallest butterfly on the card front is a Martha Stewart punch, and I added a butterfly 'body' by punching a Stampin' Up slot and adding glitter. The 'Happy Birthday' banner was hand trimmed. Here is the card opened: You can see I used the same slot punch on these layered die cut butterflies (Stampin' Up) too. Finally, here is a look at the back side: (Birthday word stamps by Papertrey Ink) I am really liking this die ... :-) A lot. In fact, with all the interactive Sizzix dies, I'm having trouble making a simple 'flat' card anymore! (Remember you can always see my other Sizzix Accordian Flip cards by looking under LABELS on the right then scrolling down to 'S'.) Thanks for stopping by today.

As promised, here's a free photo tutorial of one of the more complicated of the designs we did at Advanced Papercrafters Class this month, featuring the Circles Card Thinlits for the Sizzix Big Shot. I'm calling it a porthole flip-fold card, for obvious reasons... basically there's a window that goes all the way through to the back of the card. This would be really cool to use with our Clear Translucent Envelopes! Here's the card, opened... you can see the basic Circles Card Thinlit base, with extra openings. It's waaaaaay easier than you'd think, actually! So uncomplicated, actually, that you...
I have an awesome card fold to share with you today - not too difficult, and it looks spectacular when standing up on display. Although it does take a lot of card stock, it would be fantastic for a special occasion or for an event where lots of people wish to sign their name. TEMPLATES 1. Start by trimming your card stock to size. You'll need a 12" x 51/2" piece for the card base plus an extra 41/2" x 51/2" piece to extend the base. You'll also need an 81/2" x 31/4" piece and a 9" x 31/4" piece for the insert. 2. Time to score everything. Place the 12" x 51/2" piece horizontally on your score board and score at 4" and 8". Fold along the score lines starting with a valley fold then a mountain fold. 3. Place the 41/2" x 51/2" piece of card stock vertically on your score board and score at 4". This will leave you with a 1/2" tab on one side. 4. Place the 81/2" x 31/4" piece of card stock horizontally on the score board and score at 23/4" and 51/2". 5. Place the 9" x 31/4" piece of card stock horizontally on the score board and score at 23/4", 51/2" and 81/2". Fold along all the score lines. 6. Apply glue or double sided tape to the 1/2" tab on the 41/2" x 51/2" piece of card stock. Secure it to the right-hand side of the 12" x 51/2" piece, keeping the tab to the back of the card. Your card base should resemble the letter "M" when viewed from above. Set aside to dry. 7. Apply glue or double sided tape to the 1/2" tab on the 9" x 31/4" piece of card stock and secure it to the right hand side of the 81/2" x 31/4" piece of card stock. IMPORTANT NOTE: The 81/2" x 31/4" piece of card stock has been divided into three panels by the score lines you added earlier. The panels measure 23/4", 23/4" and 3" in width from left to right. Make sure you are joining the tab to the 3" section. When you fold the insert along the score lines, you should notice that middle section is 1/4" longer than the other two sections. See the photos below. 8. Your card stock should now look like the photo below. The taller piece is the card base and the narrower piece is the insert. 9. Choose a set of rectangular nesting dies to cut the windows from the card base. The dies need to be tall enough for the insert to fit comfortably inside (see photo below). They should be wide enough to leave a minimum of 1/2" on either side of the panel. If you don't have dies, it's perfectly okay to use a trimmer or craft knife to cut windows in the base, keeping all four cuts at least 1/2" from the sides of the panel. 10. Your insert should fit through both windows with plenty of room to spare. 11. Time to decorate! For the insert, you'll need four pieces of patterned paper measuring 21/2" x 3" and two pieces measuring 23/4" x 3". For the card base, you'll need five pieces of patterned paper measuring 33/4" x 51/4", which includes one piece for the card front. 12. Cut a window in two of the 33/4" x 51/4" pieces of card stock to form frames for the card base. This is where the nesting dies really come in handy as you can use the next size up from the one you used on the card base. 13. Use glue or double sided tape to secure all the patterned paper to the card base and the insert. You may prefer to leave one of the panels on the insert blank for a message or stamped sentiment. 14. Add your embellishments and sentiments, keeping everything relatively flat so it doesn't add too much bulk to the finished project. 15. Once your insert is decorated, thread it through the two windows as shown in the photos below. 16. Apply adhesive to the back of the first panel of your insert and secure it to the card base, about 1/2" from the outside edge. Repeat for the last panel of the insert. 17. Since the card is very bulky, it will not stay closed without a little help. I found the simplest solution was to create a belly band from a 11/2" wide strip of card stock and some embellishments. 18. Wrap the card stock around the centre of the card, leaving a small overlap. Secure into a loop with glue or double sided tape. Decorate with a strip of patterned paper, images, stamps and sentiments. NOTE: I adapted these instructions to remove the ribbon closure that was included in all the other examples I could find of this card, and replaced it with a simple belly band. If you'd prefer the ribbon closure, just do a google search for "multi-panel accordion cards" and you'll find lots of great tutorials. Products:
