Aah, aqua! This was fun. I have a surprising amount of scraps with this color, so the Rainbow Scrap Challenge/52 Weeks of ScrappyTriangles blocks were a cinch to sew up this month. In fact, I had more different fabrics than I needed. Not a problem, as I'm sure I'll need to add more blocks later. So many memories in these scraps. Another view of the whole bunch: This seems a bit dark. That background is navy, not black. It needs some orange, no? Pretty sure this will be a longer term project than 52 weeks, unless I decide I'm done with the slow pace and make a whole bunch. Meanwhile, I've got a good start on Rachel Hauser's Confetti Quilt. 12 blocks done. And the next twelve are ready to sew. These are the chain piecing parts. I'm making this quilt by prepping 12 blocks at a time. It keeps it from taking over the whole house. Not sure yet how many blocks I'll make. It might depend on how long the background fabric lasts. We spent several days with a couple of our grands this month between their day camp and the start of school while their parents were at their offices. One of our little treats is to shop the used book store near their house. They each found books in their interests: baseball for him and clay bead making/rock painting for her. But I couldn't resist a small purchase, too. I didn't need this book for the lessons, but it has lots of small (4-inch) block patterns that use the smallest scraps. I won't have to draft the patterns myself, and I'll have more ideas to keep winnowing those bins full of scraps. Win-win. There was some sewing. I didn't take my machine along, but I did bring scraps for hand piecing. My granddaughter sewed up a little tissue holder to match her new purse, and my grandson asked me to make a quilt for his tiniest Beanie Baby. I happened to have 2-1/2-inch squares with me, so I made a 6 by 6 inch 9-patch quilt (no batting) that was just the right size. No photos. Sorry. We were too busy making to stop for photos, but believe me, they were cute!! Before our little trip, I finally settled on a hand sewing project. I've been without one for some time. I was considering hexies, and had a good idea for a project, but I didn't look forward to the more finicky prep work. I found some squares I had cut a long time ago when I was thinking about trying a scrap system, so I added to them for a quick four-patch take-along project. I'm really enjoying them. Those scraps came in handy for my grandson's project, and now that I'm home, they are next to my chair for sewing while watching TV. I don't have a plan beyond the four-patches right now, but I'm thinking they might eventually become a car quilt. Here's what I have so far. I love how the seams spin in that little patch in the bottom right corner. So that's it for the scraps this week. There is something missing from this post. Where is my monthly acquisition of new fabric in the color of the month?? I didn't have time for it, so I'm hoping to combine it with the next color. (Orange, please?) I'll leave you with a little summer pleasure. It might look cool in the forest preserve, but in fact, we felt like we were walking in the tropics. So much hot, humid weather this month. All of our grands are starting school this week: pre-school, K, 1st and 4th grades. I must admit, I'm more than a bit anxious but am thankful that there are at least some protections in place for them thanks to the governor's mandate in Illinois and a county mandate in Michigan. For a list of the Alumni Blogs, see the end of the post. I created a mini book for my project this month. I have a little tutorial AND a "show-off" video for you! This adorable little mini album is 4 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide, with a 1 3/16" spine. I love the traditional colors of the Festive Holly Paper Collection, plus I just love cardinals! I also used a bit of paper from the Sparkling Poinsettia Paper Collection, which is an older collection, but has the same traditional color scheme. I created three page sets for this little mini. Each page set has an accordion fold section, a flip page, and a pocket page. It is a lot packed into such a small space! The pages are perfect for wallet-sized photos and small notes. The pages are also great for showcasing the beautiful images of the collections. If you want to see every page in the book, please check out the video below. TUTORIAL: Here is a little tutorial for making your own mini. This is a very quick-to-make project! Cut two pieces of heavy-weight chipboard to 4 1/2" x 3 1/2". Cut a piece for the spine to 4 1/2" x 1 1/2". (The spine ended up being a bit too wide, so you could make the spine a bit narrower.) Cut black cardstock to 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" and attach the chipboard to the center, making sure to have 1/8" of space between each cover and the spine. Angle the corners as shown. Attach double-sided tape to the flaps and secure. Create a hinge system using the accordion fold method. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 6". Score at 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3", 3 1/2", 4", 4 1/2", 5". Fold on all score lines in a valley-mountain fold pattern. Turn the hinge system over and place adhesive between the 2nd, 5th, and 8th sections, as shown. Adhere the sections together to form the hinges. Place adhesive over the back of the hinge system. Attach the hinge system to the spine. Place double-sided tape to the front and back of each hinge. Create three page sets, one for each hinge. Each set will have a pocket, an accordion book, and a flip page. Create the pocket pages first, as they will attach to the hinges. Cut three piece of black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 6 1/4". Score at 3 1/8" on the long side. Fold on the score lines and burnish. Place double-sided tape at the bottom of the left page. Do not glue closed yet! Attach the open end of one of the pages to one of the hinges and secure. Then fold the page over the hinge and secure the bottom and the other side, forming a pocket. The pocket will accommodate one of the Graphic 45 ATC tag. Repeat the process with all three hinges. Create an accordion fold book for each page. Cut black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 9. Score on the long side at 1/2", 3 1/2", and 6". accordion fold and burnish the folds. Place double-sided adhesive on the 1/2" flap. Attach the accordion fold to the first pocket page by the 1/2" flap. Round the corners of the 2 1/2" wide section. Repeat for each pocket page/hinge in the mini. You will have three accordion fold sections in total. Burnish all score lines to make sure the pages fold easily. Create three flip pages. Cut black cardstock to 4" x 2 3/4". Score a 1/2" flap at the top of the panel. Round the bottom corners. Chose one panel of each page set to add the flip page. Simply adhere to the page by the 1/2" flap. Decorate the pages as desired. Hello 2Crafty fans! Welcome to the blog. Today I am sharing a layout featuring a BRAND NEW fabulous piece of chipboard! 2Crafty has the best chipboard in the industry for originality, quality and value. Check out their website where you can order these fabulous pieces directly from them without having to search the stores, or having them order for you. This layout is one of my favorites, just for the simplicity of it. So easy to make with just a few chipboard pieces. Because the chipboard frames piece is so big, you don't need much else. Love it! "life DOCUMENTED" 2Crafty chippies used: life DOCUMENTED Moroccan Panel 12x12 Stacked Filmstrips - NEW I know I say this all the time, but it is very important if you want to achieve true color and consistency. First and foremost, a good coat of gesso on your chipboard. It gives your paint, or whatever you use to alter your chipboard with, something to hang onto. Like little tiny "hooks" that grab your mediums. I wouldn't even try to alter them without it. Ok, that being said, time to move on... This is the top left of the layout. I used the 12x12 Stacked Filmstrips as a background to place the whole composition on. I love this, it covers so much of the layout that you don't really need much else! I painted it with White Acrylic Paint using a stippling brush, and then placed some acetate filmstrips inside to add color and interest. Here also is one of the pieces of the Moroccan Panel, also painted with White Acrylic Paint. I cut it up using only a few of the cut piece around the layout to mimic the moroccan design of the patterned paper. Here are more Moroccan Panel pieces next to the flowers and the bottom of the 12x12 Stacked Filmstrips. The title life DOCUMENTED seemed perfect for this photo. I painted the word 'life' with a mixture of Acrylic paints, just playing around till I got the color right to match the frame around the photo. The word 'documented' was colored with Prima's Farmer Jeans Chalk Ink. And there it is, simple! Hope this has inspired you in that you don't need a lot of chipboard, just the right chipboard, to complete a composition that fills the whole page!
