Here are some quilt pictures today - I have quite a few of them saved up to show you, it's hard to resist taking photos of them when they pose nicely for me. There are quilts all around us here, because not only do I love making them, I use them all the time too.... The house is filled with dappled sunlight again today - such beautiful sunny weather with blue skies and flowers blooming - it's hard to stay in and work - yesterday I took a sewing project into the garden... I do try not to get side tracked though and actually start gardening...but sometimes you just find your self planting a few seeds, pulling a few weeds, tying a few sticks together to make the new bean canes.... These sweet creamy white narcissus grow under a tree part way down our garden, and each morning some of them are flattened to the ground, so I rescue them...maybe it's mr fox treading on them on his nightly prowl?... Sometimes I actually do have a quilt on a bed....though more often than not they are just heaped here and there..... This is a cross stitch cushion from my Home Sweet Home book....quilts mean home to me.... ...some new hexies for the next patchwork project, made by hand so I can sew it in the garden and take it away with me... And here are the first flowering tulips from the bulbs I planted in the autumn...yesterday I went outside with my cup of tea in the glorious spring sunshine and there they were all in bloom, all of a sudden...they are called Heart's Desire..such a perfect name! In a moment I am going to get back to work again...but first I'll just pop out and see how the garden is doing... Thank you so much for visiting me here. Hi friends, Today I am sharing a quilt I made way back in 2018 when I had just released the Pivot quilt pattern and Carolyn Friendlander released her beautiful fabric line called Polk. As soon as I saw this fabric I HAD to have it. If I remember correctly the shop I bought it from had a beautiful bundle that included Polk and some coordinating Kona solids that really completed the set. It was also just enough fabric to make a throw size Pivot (14 Fat Quarters). Here’s a throwback pic for you! It was September 2018 when I was working on the Pivot blocks for the quilt. I absolutely loved this color palette, it reminded me of Autumn, and seemed like the perfect quilting line that was both feminine and masculine. For this quilt I chose to do a 1/2” straight line quilting using a natural thread. I like to do a bit denser quilting when I am using a textured linen fabric to really secure any bits that could come undone with washing. I also used a fun printed navy flannel (pre-washed) for the backing of the quilt. All of this with a cotton batting, this will crinkle up in the wash to be a super cozy fall throw quilt. We took photos out at Loyola beach on Lake Michigan in Chicago / Evanston area this past weekend. I would have more photos if it were not for the absolute CRAZY amount of bees that were on the beach that day! One kid got stung, everyone tried escaping to the water but these bees were relentless - so we packed up pretty quickly and went back to our friends house. So happy I was able to bring this particular quilt out to the beach this day - the colors of the sand, blue skies and golden grasses were a perfect match for the textures and colors in this quilt. Nature really can make the best backdrop for photos. When I was taking this image, there was a woman on the walking path where I was standing, walking by. She laughed because she couldn’t see what exactly I was taking a photo of - with of all of the grass in the way. She knew for sure there was a dog sitting on the bench having a photo shoot! When I posted an update about my sashiko style stitching the other day I received some really lovely comments. And I thank you for all of them. I was, however, left with this feeling that lots of people are afraid of hand stitching. Don't think they could get their stitches small enough. Or even enough. Or something or another enough. Hogwash! Before I get started though let me make something clear, I am not an expert in any way, shape, or form. This is just my opinion and how I do things. Many may do it differently. And their way is most likely as good as or better than mine. Hand stitching is not about getting every stitch exactly the same length. Experience makes you more likely to have even stitches but it is not necessary. It is more the overall effect created by the stitches, and if anyone ever comes up close - quilt police style - to examine each and every stitch then poke them in the eye I am sure this is not someone you associate with normally and don't offer them a mince pie, cookie or cup of tea. When hand stitching with perle cotton you are not going for teeny tiny stitches. That would be counter productive. You are going for impact, enhancement of the quilt design, etc. Big is better, really and truly. The other thing you need to do is look at the back, because if you are trying to get the stitches on the back of your quilt to look exactly like the ones on the front then you are a way better person than me. Personally I am trying to do what quilting does, hold the quilt layers together, compliment the piecing and fabrics with the stitching, create something usable and pretty. As you can see above, the stitches are there, the pattern is there but the stitch length is shorter and the gaps between wider. It is what happens when you weave a needle in and out between quilt layers. Trust me here, when I first tried this I spent anal hours trying to make the back and the front exact. What a waste of time! Sometimes, horror of horrors, you might not properly catch the backing layer of fabric, or just get the needle through a little bit. The world will not end. Remember, two photos up, the back didn't look too bad? Now look even closer. Imperfections abound, if you are the quilt police and looking that closely. My other piece of advice about hand stitching with perle is to do with seams. When I am stitching something like the Christmas stars I did a couple of weeks ago I never try to get close to the seam. I go with the same 1/4" rule we use in our seam allowance. There are two reasons I do this. In my mind it looks better set back from the seam. And two, you have less layers of fabric to stitch through if you have pressed the seams in that direction in that part of the quilt. You wouldn't think two more layers of cotton would make such a big difference, but it does. I am not sure if this blog post helped anyone at all, but if it encourages just one person to buy some perle and try it out I shall be smiling. Susan

Help me decide on a case for my new phone. See the choices right here. Last night, I went to bed ready to push the panic button about everything I have to do today. I need to make lunch to celebrate Erik's birthday on Saturday, which consists of two salads, pulled chicken filling for sandwiches, and baking a cake. Also, my monthly pedicure was rescheduled for today, and I have to go to physical therapy. I need to leave this morning at about 11:15 and I won't get home again until around 3:30. I was tallying up the hours I need against the hours I have (which is never a good idea), and I found myself feeling a little overwhelmed. But now, it's 8:30 a.m. as I sit down to write this. My chicken filling is in the crockpot. I'll deal with that when I get home this afternoon. My potato salad is finished and in the refrigerator. I fried bacon and hard boiled some eggs for my 7-Layer Salad that I'll finish this afternoon, and I still have all morning tomorrow to bake the cake. (Polishes fingernails on shirt.) So now I'm feeling pretty darned spunky and ready to face the next two days with a big smile. (Heaves heavy sigh of relief.) All of that to say that I haven't had any time to sew, and I probably won't have any time before Sunday. That's okay though because I got a megadose of quilting at the MQX Quilt show yesterday, and I have some pictures for you. I'll start by saying that I'm pretty exasperated with my camera. I left home with a full charge on the battery, but it went dead after taking about 20 pictures. That was pretty disappointing, not to mention disconcerting. Mike thinks the battery may have a short and that it is discharging just sitting in the camera. Fortunately, I have other batteries, but I didn't have any spares with me yesterday. That means I was taking pictures with my iPhone, and I really dislike the quality of the images. In any case, I'll show you what I have. These were a few of my favorite quilts. I don't have a lot to say about them, but I'll add in little comments if I just can't keep my mouth shut. This first quilt won best of show, and it's easy to see why. The quilting was amazing. For most of these I'll put the card before the quilt so you can read what the quilter had to say about it. Before I go on, I just want to say that the quilting in this show was over-represented with feathering, in my humble opinion. So many of the quilts were in traditional designs and quilted with lots of feathers. While the quilting and the piecing was fabulous, I found myself feeling as if I was seeing the same quilt over and over again. After a while, I was on the lookout for quilts that were unique and different. I think you'll see that reflected in these images. Pay attention to the red tie in this quilt. It ties itself as it moves from left to right. I liked this next quilt because it was different, but also because I was interested in how she had handled the reflection in the sunglasses. She printed the image on what I'm assuming is something like Printed Treasures. This next image is the next door I want to make for my Doors of Ireland quilt. If you look in the window to the right, you can see my reflection in the glass. I've been considering how to capture that when I make the quilt block, and the quilt above gave me an idea how to do it. What I don't know now is how to make it the right size without wasting lots and lots of those fabric sheets. I thought the next quilt was just too cute. I love how this quilter quilted the wrinkles in the elephant's skin. This next one is truly unique. It's all thread painted. How many miles of thread do you think it took to do this? The gears were actual gears from watches. The next quilt was quited by an 11-year-old! (Gasp!) I'd love to see what she's doing 30-40 years from now. This gave me some ideas for how to quilt my Vintage Miniature Sewing Machines quilt. I forgot to take a picture of the card associated with this next quilt, but I loved the details. It was inspired by bears in Yellowstone National Park. I love how she quilted Ursa Major into the sky. Very clever. These next several images are of quilting designs I liked. The pictures of the whole quilt were simply too poor to bother posting, but you can enjoy the quilting anyway. I included this one because I have this quilt on my to-do list, and I liked how it was quilted. I'm working up the nerve to quilt the white trees quilt next week. I wanted to quilt some snowflakes, and I had in mind a way to do it, but then I saw this, and I really liked it. I might incorporate a similar design. I liked this "hounds tooth" pattern. Another idea for my white trees quilt. And that's all I have from the quilt show. And now...I'm continuing on with my NP4 protest, which I really hope will be coming to a close soon. It seems those nuts in Washington were cracking yesterday evening. Something about opinion polls that were the worst in history. Not a bit surprising. Anyway...this image is from the Painted Hills unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in my home state of Oregon. And with that, I'm off to get on with the rest of my busy day. Welcome to Needle and Thread Thursday, y'all! With my roses in full bloom, it's my very favorite time of year to take quilt pictures, so I hope you'll indulge this slightly picture-heavy post. As I mentioned in my last post, this quilt is a remake of my original Folk Dance quilt, and I'm keeping this one as a class sample, as well as for trunk shows (pattern available HERE and HERE). I thought a dense, allover flower quilting motif would compliment the Anna Maria Horner fabrics nicely, and I have to say- I am as proud of this quilting as any I've ever done. I even had a quilty friend ask if I had bought a longarm machine. Nope- all quilted on my domestic BERNINA, but I take that as a huge compliment! Even though I used 25 different prints in this quilt, I am saving the remainder of these fat quarters for a king size quilt for my bed. I did use the smallest leftover pieces on the backing though, and it adds just a little bit of flair. This quilt has a full rainbow of color, so I could have chosen almost any color binding. This Kona Oasis was already in my stash, and I love how it frames the twirling skirt blocks, so it was a no-brainer. Okie dokie, friends! I owe you some winners from last week's April sponsor post!
