Hi all! I can't believe that it is already OCTOBER. There is so much going on but I'm still loving every second of it. I forgot to post about this previously, but for all the non-ELA related things (including my most recent hall pass invention), you can visit my second blog at MyClassyRoom.wordpress.com I like to try out different formats and settings, so I used to have a blogger "for life", then I created that one on wordpress, and now I'm back on blogger. Besides, there are so many teacher pages on blogger that I wanted to access. Enough rambling. Week 3 centers went the best yet. The frantic business has subsided. Also, they were very "active" centers, which could have gone either way. Then I remember back to my 9th period 7th graders last year who were off-the-wall. If we did a play or a game or something where they moved (even sometimes just taking their notes from standing up around the room), they were 7million times more well behaved. There's got to be some science to that. Anyway, here are the pictures for the board; this week's topic was "Main Idea" Read to Self: Still in the library, logging their minutes in their center folders. Students read their "Book Club" choice book. I used bins from the $1 store and labeled them with index cards. There are 2 more baskets as well, I don't just teach 12 students! There are 5 more in each of the other bins. The stories are all under the Realistic Fiction genre. They had a choice of reading Granny Torelli Makes Soup, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 1, Who Ran my Underwear up the Flagpole, School Story, and There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom. These books are easier so that they can be worked on independently for all of my students. We will be working more with non-fiction and more challenging texts after our Book Clubs. Read to Someone: Around the classroom, still working with their "Book Club" books. We added "Checking for understanding" with a blue checkmark. Students asked each other the 5W's at the end of each chapter. I cannot wait to show you what I am adding to the "Read to Someone" station in the coming weeks! Listening: Students listened to an audiotape of 3 short Aesop fables. In their center folders they recorded the main idea for each. Teacher/Group: I had to add the "/" in there. I just finished all but one administration of the BRI (Basic Reading Inventory) for my own record keeping. Next week, I need to pull my students for at least 30-40 minutes each day to administer 5 different students benchmarking with F&P. So, while I wanted a strictly "teacher" group, that isn't going to happen. So, therefore, over the next few weeks, I am going to have that bunch of students play a game as reinforcement of what we are learning. This week they used cards with a "secret decoder" that shows the answer to work on Main Idea. They kept a score tally on the whiteboard. Also, which I forgot to photograph, I made "A B and C" answer cards using paint chips from WalMart. The free ones. I wrote a letter on each of the colored sections and students slide a butterfly clip to the answer. Yay! (I was in Troy by my alma matter, Sage, this weekend for "Chowderfest." I had Tom stop the truck so I could go and pick up some of the game sets they have!) Writing: Students finished publishing (final copy, cover page) their Pro/Con of 6th grade essays. Word Work: By far, the biggest hit of the week. I had 3 of my students stay after just to play it again! This week was a review week for spelling. So, I created Spelling BAM! What is that, you ask? Well, I took a container from the iced tea mix I finished up (*goodbye, summer*), and decorated it. I was in a rush, but it looked pretty good. I can always cover it in the future. Next, I filled it with cut up index cards that had all of the spelling words (1 time each), two cards that said "swipe" and two cards that said "BAM!" The final step was to secure the rules on the back with packing tape. Basically, kids sit in a circle and take turns pulling out a card. They give it to someone who reads the word. The first student needs to spell it correctly. They do, they keep the card. They don't, it goes back. A "swipe" card allows students to take a card from another player's pile, if they can spell it correctly. A "Bam!" card means all of that player's cards goes back into the jar. At the end of the centers, the student with the most cards wins! (This could me modified for vocabulary practice too) On to planning Week 4! Have a wonderful weekend!
These vibrant note cards feature the original artwork of Dafne Murillo (Lima, Peru). Dafne was a winner of the 2014 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DETAILS - One (1) card with envelope (approximately 5.5"x4" folded). - Inside is blank; artist information is on the back. - Original artwork is mixed-media: watercolor, ink, and collage. - Shipped directly from Bow Seat headquarters in Westwood, Mass. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As an organization that supports the work of the next generation of ocean caretakers, Bow Seat will not make any profit from our Etsy sales. Instead, we share 100% of the profit (after production costs) with the student artist and our ocean conservation partners. If you would like a chance to have your art sold at Bow Seat's Etsy shop, enter our annual Ocean Awareness Contest. Find out more at bowseat.org. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL ARTIST STATEMENT Due to its mild seaside climate, my country, Peru, is an ideal place for whale sightings. For many people in the coastal region, being able to see a blue or a humpback whale is not a rare occurrence, leading to a lucrative bio-marine tourism industry. Ironically, Peruvian beaches are some of the most polluted in the world. I've been involved in two annual beach-cleaning projects and have been stunned by the countless bottles and plastic bags that spread across the shoreline of Lima alone. This is a factor that inspired my piece. My art project is my version of the "iceberg" metaphor: people can only see the portion above the surface but are oblivious to the portion undersea. I feel this is the case in Peru (as in many other countries); people can appreciate the whales yet fail to realize that by continuing to litter the sea with their plastic waste, they are responsible for the extinction of this cetaceous, which may unknowingly mistake the plastic for food. Therefore in my work I portray a whale emerging from the water - while the portion above the water is a regular painting of the animal, the submerged portion is the outline of the whale made completely out of plastic waste. I used acrylic to paint the upper whale and watercolours for the sea and sky. For the submerged portion I made a collage, pasting real plastic wrappers that I had painted and cut to resemble real waste.
Finally the time of year has come when living on sixth floor and looking out of our flat's windows feels as if the world outside has simply vanished at times. I love fog! Well, not exactly when I have to drive a car, but when walking the dog and finding ourselves being somehow "wrapped up" in a blanket that cannot be touched but that reduces sounds and makes me feel as if the existing world was only just within that small bubble around us that somehow "moves along" as we walk on. Today I tried to capture this feeling in images and (my own) words. I hope at least some of the meaning gets through to you. ;) Have a lovely weekend! xxx Stamp used: Indigo Blu - "Bare Forest I" Stencil used: Tim Holtz - Sizzix - "Birch Trees"

Pastel Shades Today I reopened my Etsy shop and decided to sell some of my inchies. I enjoy the process of making inchies. I enjoy seeing a set come together and find new ways and new ideas to embellish them with each set I create unique. Pink & Red There are so many ways to use inchies, in bigger pieces of art, embellishing journals, bags, purses, iphone and ipad cases, jewellery making, quilts.......these are just a few, I'm sure there are many more. Father's Day is right around the corner! And surprise, surprise... Chuck and I have yet to make hubby a gift or a card. (I've been pretty sick lately, so I've totally been off the ball with crafts. Ack.) Last year we made these super cute Father's Day Cards. This year... well... it might just be a chocolate bar and a doodle. (Sorry hubby!) But I still have a cute Father's Day card to share. This super-secret spy card would be great for older kids to make for dad. Kids create their own ciphers and codes. Then, dad decodes the message on Father's Day. Neat, right? You even turn the dials to find out the code. So. Cool! You can find a video for this Super Secret Father's Day Message Card on PBS today! (And if you need more tips on how to make the cipher work, check out my comments down in the comment section!) Let's keep in Contact! You can always find fun ideas on my Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts! (Or subscribe to my email mailing list by filling out the pink bar at the top of your screen.) Happy making, friends!

Topic 13: Time Hi Everyone, Leandra here to introduce a new topic on the PaperArtsy Blog: Time. When I first started getting into this craft caper over 20 years ago, stamps that involved clocks, cogs/ gears, timepieces were among my regular favourites. I love how this images work in numerous situations, and easily provide a focal point. Before we get into the nitty gritty, here is Darcy with the winner for our last challenge which of course was Stencils. Darcy here...Stencils are so versatile, and you have come up with some brilliant techniques over the past 3 weeks. Amazing results have been achieved by reversing the stencil, layering your stencils, bumping, and using the stencil shape to create a transfer. Your finished projects have been stunning, from tags to journal pages, collages with embellies and sunny scrapbook layouts. Sooooo, the winning name out of the hat for Topic 12: Stencils..is...Susan Carol from Faith Words,Faith Expressions Please email Darcy to claim your prize [email protected] It's Leandra back with you to explore Time. First up, here is a short video. As you can see from the video, here at PaperArtsy we have numerous 'time' themed stamps, some quirky, some vintage, and some in the middle. Cast your mind back to 7 days ago, and you may vaguely recollect there was a new Hot Pick with Clocks on it too! Remember this...? But what I forgot to show in the video were these reasonably new stamps from earlier in the year, also Hot Picks. HPXT06 (lots of months/ dates), HPXT07 (large months in various fonts), HPXT08 (days/ timewords). We also have a 'clocks' series in the Ink and the Dog Stamp series. These stamps are 1/2 A4, so that is A6 size, about 3.5" x 5", and are available unmounted or EZ Mounted. These are still some of my favourite images from the Ink and the Dog series. Or if you prefer something a bit more quirky...how about these from Squiggly Ink? Again, there are numbers that are useful on clock faces, but there are also build-a-birds with clocks for tummies! So there are all kinds of stamps, and also plenty of minis that fit these themes already available. So what might you make with these, or any other time-themed stamps you might have to hand? Well here are some interesting ideas for you to consider! Well you could do some simple stamping/ masking and colouring onto AB pages, a bit like the above samples. Maybe you might find some time-relevant words to use in a journal page? Or maybe you will do something very mixed-media style with layers and texture, like these ideas Or this, a submission to Cloth Paper Scissors ? What about some layering of elements for a book cover? Or perhaps a book? I love how the pages are burnt at the edges, this also infers the passing of time, or perhaps how precious and fragile time is? The egg timer and clock are instered into niches, that are also distressed. Really nice book! But this looks like a lot of thought and planning has gone into this wonderful canvas. If you have a load of embellishments lying about, perhaps you might gives something like this a go? More here. There are many more ideas on my Pinterest page . I'll be pinning more over the next 2 weeks while this topic is open. I hope you can find time to join in! Leandra Topic 13:Time You are welcome to share your ideas and link up your creativity to this page. Hello Everyone, it's been a fabulous week here at the Brown household with Ken's birthday Thursday and our 40th wedding anniversary on the same day. Last night we celebrated with the children and grand children having a lovely meal out together and tonight we celebrate with a few friends and neighbours by having a summer garden BBQ. We just hope it doesn't rain after all the wonderful hot sunny weather we had in July. Today I thought I would share four altered playing cards that I have been making (you can seer the previous 4 here that I made in March if you haven’t caught up with them yet) Although I followed the ideas and techniques from Stephanie Ackerman, I am using images and collage pieces of my own. I save quotes and make my own sheets and print out to use in albums, on cards and mixed media projects. I won’t share the process steps in respect for Stephanie and her online class, but suffice to say I am enjoying making these and having fun exploring some mixed media techniques. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. hugs {brenda} xx
I recently hosted a 1" collage swap . Where 7 players took part. We all ended up with a A4 mosaic of 1" squares on canvas. This is the color my friend Lee-Ann chose - gorgeous isn't it???
About The Artwork Creating art inspired by hyacinth flowers involves immersing oneself in the essence of these blooms. I started by observing the hyacinths closely, noting the graceful curve of the petals, the rich palette of colors, and the delicate fragrance that fills the air. The final artwork is not just a visual representation but an emotional journey, capturing the serenity and rejuvenation that these spring flowers symbolize. Michael C. McMillen is a mixed-media artist based in Santa Monica, California, whose installations and sculptures made out of recyclable materials, or as he calls them "the cast-offs of our material society," play around the themes of time, change, and illusion as a means to create what he refers to as "visual spiritual poetry." It's very interesting work with a magic of its own. The two friends I've brought with me to view his work have referred to his pieces as post-apocalyptic. I see it more as a beautiful display of decay. They had a similar eerie effect on me as when I visited a ghost town of the Gold Rush era, here in California, for the first time. Like a glimpse at the ancient ruins of the future. To fully appreciate his installations you really must experience them. You can view his work in person at an upcoming exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California from April 16, 2011 to August 14, 2011, entitled Train of Thought.
Any fan of the Notorious RBG will adore this quote which I hand typed on one of my vintage typewriters, including a 1962 Smith-Corona Galaxie. And even better, the quote is typed onto your choice of an authentic library book due date card. Nostalgia abounds! Perfect for your card or mixed media project, or even simply for framing or use as a special bookmark. The card measures roughly 3” x 5”. The standard card I use is an authentic new white library due date card, which is made of card stock. You can also select other library card options indicated in the varieties field- swipe photos for available options. For an additional fee you can choose to have the card laminated by purchasing the laminate add-on (a separate listing in the shop). FREE GIFT with every purchase! One book pocket (design of my choosing) is included with your order. Additional pockets can be purchased- see the listing for “book pockets.” (Please note- ONE book pocket is included, no matter how many quote cards you order)
I started out making a card this morning, but just wasn't "feeling it". So I gathered everything up and put it to the side and started with a different thought. It was raining outside so I decided to grab some bright Distress Paint colors from the shelf to make something happy! I found a piece of chipboard on the shelf - yep, just plain 'ole chip. Painted a coat of Gesso from Dina's new line and let it dry (which is VERY quick - I like that). Once dry, I painted over the surface with Worn Lipstick (my favorite pink Distress Paint). I spritzed it with a light mist of water to make the lines disappear once dry. Tissue Wrap is next...just add pieces with Multi Medium. Another favorite - Distress Damask stamp and Watering Can Archival Ink. This whole project is really fast and random. What you think may be really important - like where the stamp is placed - really isn't. It's just about building the layers to create the texture. You might notice I didn't even use a stamp block, I just rolled it on. You will need to let the ink dry before the next step (or use a heat tool like me). Two more colors of Distress Paint - Peacock Feathers and Crushed Olive. Make a paint palette on your craft mat to work from. Then use your best tools, your fingers, to add paint to the surface. Don't think too much. In fact, if you can limit yourself to 2-3 minutes to add the paint, it will force you to make more intuitive choices. Next the Crushed Olive. This is how I ended. Knowing when to stop is part of the process! Set aside to dry. How about a little texture? Wendy Vecchi Embossing Paste/palette knife and the Bubble stencil. This stuff is like butter! Most important, CLEAN the stencil when the paste is still wet!! Can you mix stain and paint? I did. Tumbled Glass Distress Stain and Tarnished Brass Distress Paint. I pounced the Distress Stain over the dots until the stain was puddling, then pounced a bit of the Tarnished Brass over the top. I dried the mix with the heat tool and then wiped up the remaining liquid with a paper towel. So this is the part that might be a just a little scary for some, but stay with me here. I put some Gesso onto a palette knife (yes, I know that usually goes underneath the paint) and ran it down the surface. I just kept adding Gesso in the thin coat till I thought it looked balanced. I know, really random, right? I let the Gesso dry, then tinted it just a bit with Vintage Photo (gotta love that new Mini Blending Tool). Now a quick easy layer of Worn Lipstick, just over the Gesso. I added the paint with the dabber top and smoothed it out with a wet wipe. I had this piece of Frameworks sitting on my desk that I had previously painted with Iced Spruce. I punch out the centers and stamped them with text. Then added them to the canvas. I created a drop shadow using Distress Markers. Next up...a Chitchat saying. And a little more marker work. Again, fingers are your your best tools for smudging. The last step is to add some speckles with the new Spritzer Tool. Insert the marker in the tool so the marker sits just past the tip where the air comes out. Hold it up above your work, aim the Spritzer air hole straight down and squeeze. Super fun tool to work with and it adds a fine splatter effect that makes the perfect finishing touch. I added a metal piece from the Adornments - Nature pack (with a little Iced Spruce Distress Paint added) to a small clip board I had. The just slipped the little painting under the clip. Loving the final result. Do you notice you can barely see the tissue and the stamping layer? But what you can see is important in the layering process. I know I used a lot of different products in this project. But really, the idea is to use what appeals to you... colors you like, stencils you like...make it yours. Just remember, layers are the key! Hope you have a happy day! Now go create some layers! Carry on, paula InLinkz.com
