At the beginning of the year, grade 9 Foundations classes Quick! Get those Deweys in order! completed an "interval training" to learn about using the library. The goal: Work in teams to figure out all of the amazing ways the library and its services can help them during the year. The other goal: No teacher talk! Here's the doc with handouts for each station and an overview of the lesson. It's a full period (70 minutes) but could easily be broken up into several mini-lessons. Students document each skill with smartphones and social media. If students don't have phones, they can borrow an iPad and use their email to send their evidence to me. Skills covered: (links go to station directions) Finding areas in the library Finding call numbers Dewey order & Library Website Using the catalog Library in Your Pocket (Installing Destiny and other apps) Using Resource Lists & QR codes This is LOUD and lots of fun. All you need to do is set up each station as far apart as possible with the directions and any materials needed. I told students "No questions. Read the directions!" and actually did have some groups do it all on their own correctly (!)
I'm about to enter the last week of the first quarter and just now getting around to blogging about one of my first projects of the year! Keeping up with 3 schools can be a bit hectic...but lots of creative fun is happening in my Art Rooms and I get at least one hug a day thanking me for it. This year I decided to start the year by doing one line project with all my 1st graders and 2nd graders and another project with all of my 3rd - 5th graders instead of my usual different project for each grade. Of course my 3 classes of 2nd/3rd grade splits through a monkey wrench in that...so some 3rd grade students did the younger one. My goal was to introduce, discuss, or review (depending on the level) line quality to all my students, while keeping the craziness of the first couple weeks of school to a minimum. There always seems to be schedule changes, students moving from one class to another, or waiting on numbers to settle before possibly getting another teacher, splitting a class, or even unsplitting a split class these first couple of weeks. So I thought less planning and prep would come in handy...and it did! I called the 1st/2nd grade project "Hands Up". I got the idea from a Pinterest post and adapted it to fit what I wanted. After discussing Line as an Element of Art, students traced their hands and arms. We drew as many different kinds of lines as we could think of on the Smartboard (or under my document camera in one of my rooms). Students used crayons to design their hands/arms with lots of lines and colors. I insisted they use white at least once. The next class we talked about the crayon-resist method. Students had fun painting watercolors over the crayon. When dry they carefully cut the hand and arm out. At each of my buildings I displayed all of these creative hands together radiating out from a bright orange and yellow spot. The display was quite striking all together!

Zendaya at the Art Of Elysium’s 9th Annual Heaven Gala at 3LABS in Culver City, CA on January 9, 2016
If you’re applying to college, you’ll hear a lot of talk about your GPA, and how much it matters in the college admissions process. Many students find the topic confusing: How come it’s a number from 0.0 to 4.0? What if my school gives out grades as percentages from 0 to 100? What if my school […]
Are you looking for high school freshman orientation ideas or first day of school activities for 9th grade? If so, you’ve come to the right place! This back-to-school Selfie Scavenger Hunt is a fun and engaging resource that helps students get to know their way around their new school. It is perfect to use as part of a freshman orientation camp or new student orientation in the summer or as a first day of school activity in the fall. It combines three things that teens love: using their cell phones, taking selfies, and spending time with their peers. All while helping them learn the locations of important places in the school and break the ice with their classmates! In this activity, students will learn the locations of important places in your school by working in teams to complete a Selfie Scavenger Hunt. Using old school technology (a paper map of your school) and new school technology (Smart Phones), they will work together to navigate the school and take selfies in front of as many important school locations as they can. They will have a list of locations to check off as they go (places like the library and the guidance office). They will have a limited time frame to work within (you decide how much time to give them) so they will also need to strategize and problem solve to plan their route and use their time efficiently. When their time is up, they will return to the classroom and a winning team will be crowned! I have included several designs of printable certificates that you can give to the winners. I would also recommend offering your students additional prizes for winning. These do not need to be expensive or elaborate. I have found that students are very motivated by the promise of candy or bonus points! Students are asked to locate the following places: Main Office, Guidance Office, Nurse’s Office, Gym, Cafeteria, Library, Social Studies Office, World Languages Office, Auditorium, English Office, Science Office, Math Office, Health & PE Office, Art Room, Band Room, and Student Activities Office Need to adjust the directions or change the locations to better fit your school and its layout? No problem. The text of the directions and all the locations are fully editable! To set you up for success, I also created a number of additional items to ensure your Selfie Scavenger Hunt runs smoothly. I recommend sharing your plans with your administrator and school security guards before the day of the activity. This is helpful because they will understand why the students are in the hall and that they have permission to be using their cell phones to take selfies at the different locations. To make this easy, I have prepared a brief explanation that you can share with administration or other staff either as a letter or as part of an email (just copy and paste into any email). You can edit the text of that message to best suit your needs. I even created special hall passes that you can issue to each team. These passes state basic behavioral expectations for each team (follow school rules and do not disturb other classes). For added accountability, the pass also has spaces for the date, the time students should return to the classroom, which room they are in, and your name. (Can you tell that I’ve taught high school for fifteen years?!) Your purchase includes the following: Table of contents Student Selfie Scavenger Hunt directions and locations list (in color and black and white) Teacher checklist (in color and black and white) Hall passes (in color and black and white) 16 different winners’ certificates (8 in color and same 8 in black and white) Letter/email to administrators and other relevant staff Page of tips Guide to downloading the free font I used (in case you are using an older version of PowerPoint) Please click on the Preview button (towards the top of the page) for a closer look at what's included! Your purchase will come in a zip file that contains the following: PDF file with all activity components PowerPoint file with all activity components PDF file with all certificates PowerPoint file with all certificates Using the PDF files, everything is ready to print and you can fill out the hall passes and certificates by hand. Using the PowerPoint files, you can edit the text of the directions and locations on the main activity sheet as well as the main text of the hall passes. You can also type in the information that goes on the blanks on the certificates and hall passes before you print them. Looking for a Selfie Scavenger Hunt for elementary or middle school? Be sure to click on the links below: ⭐Selfie Scavenger Hunt for Elementary School ⭐Selfie Scavenger Hunt for Middle School Please note: You will need Microsoft PowerPoint in order to open the PowerPoint files and make any desired changes to the editable portions of the text. There are three porches to enjoy on this four square house plan: one in front, one in back and one upstairs off the master suite. All bedrooms are located upstairs as well as the laundry for your convenience. This leaves the main floor for entertaining and family time. The living room and dining room flank the foyer which draws you to the back of the home where the kitchen is open to the family room. A breakfast area is open to the kitchen and has access to the screened porch in back. Related Plan: Build in a reverse orientation with house plan 50100PH.
I do a Classroom Guidance lesson at the beginning of the year with each of the 3 classes I'm in charge of; 8th, 9th, and 10th. During this lesson I go over what my main responsibilities are as a School Counselor; scheduling, testing, and counseling. When I talk about counseling with my students I always go into what are the three things that I have to report. I find it is a good way to open the door to that conversation, it also allows me to remind students of that conversation if and/or when they come down to talk to me. "Remember when I was in your classroom at the beginning of the year and I told you there were three things that I have to report?" Then I go into my conversation about our two types of diplomas, credits, verified credits, yadda yadda. It's amazing how many times you can over something and students still forget. I also give each student an "information sheet" to fill out and give back to me. My goal is to meet with each student individually to talk about what they want to take class wise, career wise, college wise, etc. During that time I find it will be helpful for me to have their information sheets to help me guide them. It also has some information to allow me to pick out students who might be in need of a little more attention counseling wise. Below is the information sheet. Before I finish my lesson, I give each student a checklist. I created these checklists, but I added them below to share with you :) I tell students that whether they are college bound or not, these sheets will help them graduate.

We are off and running at Zamo! As usual, I am starting the school year off with a collaborative project that is low stress and high impact. a little background- during the first week I meet with classes for 30 minute mini lessons. This allows me to review art room rules and procedures and to get students creating right away. Kids end up creating for about 20 minutes. This lesson always emphasizes unity and variety in both art and our school community and beyond. I make a point of introducing textile artists, fabric designers, and quiltmakers with these lessons due to the modular nature of the designs and because I feel that they are often neglected in art education and the art world. This year, I discovered the work of Tula Pink through instagram and her "TriDazzler" quilt jumped out at me from her feed. I love the repetition of the diamonds and triangles and how the colors repeat in a looser visual way. The main adjustment we made in our approach to Tula's quilt design, was that the center line of the diamond could be rotated either horizontally or vertically. The prep for this project is pretty simple compared to some others that I have done (looking at you Libs Elliott project and the Latifah Saafir/Sylvia Sutters project;) I precut a bunch of 6x6" squares that covered the spectrum of colors, plus any tints and shades of those I had available. I then cut a bunch of those squares in half. Before each class comes in, I place a square & triangle at each seat. As classes move through, I progress through the collection of colors I have to create a loose gradient across the install. I don't have a formula to the progression, it's more of a feel when having colors enter and exit, and re-enter the overall arrangement. Students glue the triangle onto their diamond. Students rotate their diamond, so the center line is horizontal. Students add lines from the top and bottom of the diamond to the center line. They need at least 2. Students add any colors like like to their smaller triangles, leaving at least one piece the color of the paper on top and bottom. Students put glue on the back of their diamond. Students bring their piece to the larger paper quilt and place it on, making the decision to have the center line vertical or horizontal, repsonding to the diamonds already in place. end of day 1. end of day 2. I still have 2 days to go. I am out of space to assemble the full install on my tile floor. There are 14 classes that will take part in this over the next two days. My plan is to add one more section of length to make it 22' long and one more section of height along the whole thing to make it 9' tall. The final install will go on the back wall of our auditorium, so that we have have a dynamic piece of art up by the second week of school. I can't wait to see this whole piece assembled on the wall. It's always interesting to see these come together and it's particularly cool to see it in different ways- the diamonds up close during the activity, on an angle while up on a ladder above my floor, to the finished piece to take in while standing back from it. Our kids are always stoked to participate and watch it grow, too. Depending on the size of your school, you could have everyone take part. If you're an art teacher and want to try this- go for it! Just be kind and cite your sources:)
