Unit 1b: Linear Relationships In this unit we focused on slope and rate of change, proportional relationships and linear relationships that are not proportional. This year for my linear relationships unit I put an emphasis on the use of a "mini table" to find the rate of change. This is such an effective method because it can be used to find the slope of a line, and the rate of change in a situation or in a table. Instead of teaching multiple methods, I teach them that the slope can be found using any two points. And they have discovered that the "mini table" method is super easy for them. :o) I came up with this idea in the middle of last year after my students took the CAASPP Interim Assessment. This new method for finding the slope really helped my students when they took the Summative Assessment at the end of the year. This is why I incorporated this method into every part of my unit on Linear Relationships from the beginning this year. Here is my "mini table" method. ;o) Students Interactive Math Notebooks My students finally have my Interactive Math Notebook expectations and procedures down and they are finally starting to use them as a reference. My Collaborative Team Structure I have added some new structures and expectations to my Collaborative Teams this year. One of my new expectations is that when the recorder/reporter is sharing out to the class, they have to "Stand and Deliver" using a microphone. I have been creating and using math error analysis activities with my students (Grades 5 - 8) for the past 13 years. Benefits of Math Error Analysis: Giving students opportunities to identify and correct errors in presented solutions allows them to show their understanding of the mathematical concepts I have just taught. My Experience: Every time I incorporate math error analysis activities into my lessons I am always amazed at how quickly it leads to richer discussions and deeper thinking among my students. Math error analysis activities, tasks and worksheets for middle school math grade 6 , grade 7 and grade 8.

This school year is bringing some big changes! In addition to teaching a couple of my usual sections of 6th grade math, I will also have the opportunity to have one class of 8th grade math this school year. It can be a little nerve-racking to switch grade levels, but I am excited to get started! Since I am planning on using a math workshop structure (similar to what I do with the 6th graders), it has been a summer busy with creating materials and resources that I can use in 8th grade math. I thought I'd highlight a few of these 8th grade math resources in this post! I started by creating task cards. My 6th grade math task cards have worked so well for me to use at the front table during workshop, I knew I had to start by creating an 8th grade version. Pictured below is a free unit of these 8th grade task cards that focuses on Units of Measure. At the front table during math workshop, I always start the students with the task card from the set above. If they are able to easily finish those problems, than I give them one of the enrichment task cards. I'm excited to have a full set of these ready to go for my first 8th grade math class! As you can see, I've spent a bunch of time this summer printing and cutting these task cards! With it being my first year teaching a section of 8th grade math, I have been spending time creating resources to use with my 8th grade group. I have finally gotten around to putting all of these 8th grade math materials into a mega bundle. Below I highlighted each of the math bundles/resources that are included! The bundle is linked at the bottom of this post, or you can click here to take a look! 8th Grade Math Task Cards Full Year Bundle This set of 8th grade math task cards includes problems that are at a more basic level of the concepts we cover. I expect all of my 8th graders (it is a Math 8 class, not Algebra) to be able to do these. This bundle includes a task card for 93 different concepts and includes a total of 276 problems. Since we are all math people, let's do the math... that is an average of 2.97 problems per card! :) Topics include a wide range of 8th grade math concepts, including topics related to rational numbers, proportions, percents, a wide range of algebra concepts, two and three dimensional geometry concepts, statistics, probability, and more! 8th Grade Math Enrichment Task Cards Full Year Bundle This set is similar to the regular task cards that I described above, however these are much more challenging problems. I don't always expect all of my Math 8 students to be able to get to these, but of course am always pushing them to try! This bundle includes 89 different concepts and 215 total problems (I'll let you do the math this time!). The reason there are fewer problems is because these tend to take much longer to solve. The topics are similar to the other task cards, just more difficult! I have found these to be great to use during math workshop with the small group that I am working with and also for early finishers during whole group work times. 8th Grade Math Exit Slips Full Year Bundle This set of exit slips is set up the same way as my task cards, however each card includes exactly four problems that increase in difficulty. It ends up being 93 topics and 372 total problems. My district uses grading for learning, so each student earns a beginning, developing, proficient, or advanced grade in each math standard. These exit slips include one problem at each level for every concept. I actually use these as a daily check, which is like a mini-quiz, at the start of each class. It gives me a great chance to see if my students understood the lesson from the previous day! 8th Grade Math Scavenger Hunt Bundle I have found scavenger hunts to be extremely effective and engaging for both 6th and 8th graders. I put together this scavenger hunt bundle to use throughout the year in 8th grade math. It includes 7 different scavenger hunts for various 8th grade concepts. Each scavenger hunt includes 12 problems/posters that you place around the room. Students travel through the 12 problems and must find their next problem based on their previous answer! These are a great way to get kids up and moving around. 8th Grade Math Sort Bundle The math sort bundle might be the most effective way to kids working together and talking about math. In small groups, they receive 4 answer cards and 20 problem cards. After solving a problem, they sort the card under the correct answer card. After all 20 problem cards are sorted, they flip over the cards and must unscramble the funny phrases on the back! The bundle includes 4 topics, 16 sorts, and 320 total problem cards. 8th Grade Math Connect Four Bundle This Connect Four Bundle includes 10 different games, again all related to 8th grade math concepts. After creating a wide range of these for 6th grade math and seeing how engaging they were, I decided to start making them for my Math 8 class. Students must solve problems, cover up their answers on their board, and try to connect four! 8th Grade Math Challenge of the Week Problems This set of problems are the problems I post each week as my "Challenge of the Week." As you can see in the picture, I also have a set of these problems for 6th grade math as well. The challenge of the week has been a great opportunity to give my higher students a chance to challenge themselves. Every Monday, I post a new challenge of the week problem on my board. Students have until the end of the day on Thursday to submit an answer. On Friday, we discuss the problem and anybody that got it correct gets a mint or Starburst! Right now, the 8th grade set includes 27 of my 8th grade challenge problems, but I will probably add to this as the year goes! Hopefully this gives a solid picture of what is all included in this bundle! Here is another post that has been in my drafts since March. Oh my! Thank goodness I have summer to sit down and share these with you. Enjoy:) This was the first time I have taught slope triangles. Actually, and don't judge me, I've never given them any time in my curriculum. That changed this year as I decided to spend several days working with them in my Pre-Algebra 8th grade classes. We started our unit with Fawn Nguyen's awesome lesson using staircases to begin our discussion of slope. I know that Fawn used this with her 6th graders but it was appropriate to use with my Pre-Algebra classes. Here is the link to Fawn's first of two posts on this activity. Fawn goes into great detail explaining the questioning and student interaction. Take time to read her posts, they are awesome. Thanks Fawn! My students completed the worksheet in one class period. I'm hoping that next year we will spend more time with our discussions. I love the video that Fawn shared from the Utah Avalanche Center discussing the slope of hills and avalanches. We showed this at the beginning of class the next day. Next we did an interactive notebook page on counting to find slope. We drew slope triangles and labeled them. Then they did the INB page below with their partners. I probably should have added a vertical line on this page as well. Followed by this activity from illuminations. There were a few other activities that I will share in a later post. Of course we watched Colin Dodds Slope video. The kids love his songs and so do I! It was worth spending this amount of time on slope triangles. It gave the students an added visual for finding slope that I know many of them need. I was happy with how much the slope triangles helped my struggling students. When they would hear the words slope triangle they knew exactly what they needed to do. Transformations prove to be tricky for our students to remember each year but these six great activities are here to help you transform your students in no time.

Last year I did not teach this unit before the students took the CAASPP Summative Assessment. This year I wanted to teach this unit before the CAASSP, so I replaced the Exponent Properties and Scientific Notation Unit with this unit. #gooddecision The unit started with a focus on Congruence and Rigid Transformations. I really wanted to focus on the fact that the figures didn't change shape or size they just moved locations. The first rigid transformation the unit focused on was Translations. I wanted the students to practice rigid transformations by making their own figures and transformation for each of the rigid transformations so I created a poster task. The poster task was split into parts and done over multiple days. Each time the students learned a new transformation, they would complete the next part of the task for that transformation and add it to their poster. iMath Lesson - Rigid Transformations Poster Task - (Part One and Two) Students showed their understanding of this concept in my Showbie Poster Task on Rigid Transformations. Students created their own figure and translated the figure using their own rule. iMath – Practice in Tenmarks and Buzzmath Students used Tenmarks and Buzzmath to practice translations.
